Chapter 10 - It's Now Or Never!

Mr. Sayo told us to hone our skills and improve our combat effectiveness.

To make sure this was going to happen, he let us leave the beginner monster field. Starting from tomorrow we would be able to fight in the field with niger level monsters.

Monsters were split into different levels of powers. It started with the weak monsters, intermediate monsters, strong monsters, lord monsters, and finally god monsters. There were other sub-ranks but those weren't too important.

I went back to my room to get some rest as I had been training intensely for the past few days. I took a shower and lay on my bed, intending to do a little more planning before sleeping but my body had other plans.

Devin sat right next to me. He hadn't given up on pestering me about my powers even though I had tried to dissuade him every time. It was worse now that he knew who my parents were.

Mr. Sayo handed us some armbands." These armbands will protect you from getting hurt. They will help shield you from a certain level of attacks, boost your combat power, as well as allow us to monitor your health status and location".

After ensuring we took the necessary supplies, we set off into the field, The field was a very pretty sight, unlike the beginner one. It had radiant flowers adorning the ground, lush green shrubs, majestic trees with wild fruits growing on them, and a fresh, relaxing breeze that brushed past my face and brought pleasant smells. It was all so intoxicating that my head began to feel light.

"Mental barrier activated." As soon as the sound faded, a whirring sound came from the armband.

"Prepare for battle kids" Mr. Sayo. commanded with a smile on his face. "The enemy is an intermediate-level monster so be on guard." As soon as he had said this, the monster came into view. It was a serpent about 30 feet in length and bright green in color, with black markings on the head. A purple fume oozed from its nose which must have been the cause of the scent that I caught earlier.

"The armband might be able to keep you from getting affected by the hypnotic mist but it won't be able to block heavy physical damage so take care to not get hit." Mr. Sayo instructed us, making it obvious he wouldn't be intervening. Our trial had begun.

"I'll draw the monster's attention while you guys find a way to deal with it," Daniel yelled and dashed towards the serpent, summoning his whip and beginning to channel energy into it. The monster noticed his movement and reared its head then lunged at Daniel at an alarming speed. Luckily, Daniel managed to dodge in time, rolling to the side and using his whip to slash at the snake's head. The snake was unscathed and raised its head to strike once more, but Devin leaped forward and unleashed a Flash Bang from his fist, knocking the serpent against a tree. It was slightly stunned and Daniel used that time to morph his whip into its sword form and unleashed an energy blade that slashed the underbelly of the serpent, injuring it.

"Well don't just stand there girls, help us.", yelled Daniel. As I was knocked out of my shock at how they were able to synergize and wound the monster, I quickly lengthened my hair and wound it around the serpent and the tree, pinning the beast. Delight summoned her pet wolf, 'Toto' and merged with it. After the transformation, she grew 2-inch-long claws and her eyes turned yellow. She leaped with an agility I had not seen before and sliced the monster's head, gouging deep into its flesh just below the eyes. The monster hissed in pain and began to thrash about. I could feel my hair losing strength.

"I can't hold it much longer guys, back away." I managed to get out before the monster broke free and knocked Daniel and the others away. Delight managed to land safely thanks to her increased reflexes and agility, but the boys landed heavily on the floor and Daniel howled in pain as he had received the brunt of the attack. It sounded like he had a broken bone, which was bad cause now we would have to fight without him.

"Hey wolf girl, do you think you can do that one more time?" asked Devin as he got to his feet and began to channel his energy into his fists again. "I'll stun it again, Beatrix will pin it and then you finish it off." As much as I hated having to go along with his plan, it seemed like a solid one so I agreed. Devin charged in and sprang off the ground just as the snake's tail lashed to knock him away. He unleashed a flashbang at the serpent but it dodged it and swatted Devin back down.

As happy as I was that someone finally gave Devin the smack he deserved, I was horrified at the thought that we were going to be short of another fighter. To my surprise, Devin stood back up, his balance wavering as he was still writhing from the strength of the blow. Just as he was about rushing in, he suddenly collapsed on the floor and I finally noticed the blood dripping down his forehead and realized he must have sustained a serious injury.

"Well, ain't that just great?" I grumbled to which Mr. Sayo chuckled. "Aren't you going to step in?" I fumed at him.

"If I have to step in every time you're in trouble, how ever will you learn.", he retorted with a cheeky smile.

Why couldn't we get a normal squad master.

"Just perfect" I murmured to myself, wondering how to deal with our current situation. With Daniel and Devin out of the fight, it was up to Delight and me to defeat the monster. I was going to have to do this. It was my time to shine. Its now or never!!
