Chapter 44 - The Symbols of The King

(Third Person POV)

It was the day of the wedding.

Prince Baelon Targaryen and Princess Helaena Targaryen were now officially husband and wife, future King and Queen. This wedding was one of the most anticipated events in recent years. After the Ceremony, there was a Royal Feast, which was meant to celebrate the union between the young couple.

Lords and Ladies from across the Realm attended the Wedding, excited about the day. This marked the solidifying of the Realm's future. Baelon Targaryen was the Heir and his children would continue the Targaryen Royal Line. And with Baelon being Balerion's Rider, this was a significant thing, especially with Baelon's recent exploits.

The Royal Feast was held outside, in the Secret Gardens, tables placed all over and were full of food. Many Lords approached the Table where the newlyweds sat, congratulating them on their marriage.

Helaena, despite being somewhat shy, was glowing. Her sweet and bright smile was noted from all around the Gardens, warming the hearts of even the guards in attendance. She wore a beautiful white dress, which matched perfectly with her long combed hair. She wore a necklace with a single purple jewel that made her beautiful eyes stand out. She also wore a small bracelet, shaped like the wings of her dragon, Dreamfyre, which had the dragon's head at the top of it.

Baelon's wedding outfit was that of a regal black outfit, with red outlines and a small Targaryen Crest on the collar of the shirt. He wore a regal cape, which had fur on the collar and the cuffling for the cape's collar was shaped like a black dragon; Balerion.

As they feasted, Baelon sat next to his sister-wife, looking around and seeing all the Lords of the Realm enjoying themselves.

Things were tense with him lately, something he did not want Helaena to know about, much less involved.

As Lord Beesbury left the table, congratulating them and gifting them a small chest full of jewels and gold, Baelon looked over to Lord Corlys's table and saw that he had been staring at the Prince.

Baelon narrowed his eyes slightly after making eye contact with the Lord of The Tides.

Corlys gave him a slight nod, raising his cup in respect, which sent him a silent message.

Baelon understood the message; he had his support. Or at least, that was apparent.

As Helaena greeted the next Lady that reached the table, Baelon merely looked over at the table where House Strong sat.

He made eye contact with Harwin Strong, who quickly glanced away, proceeding to speak to his Father.

Baelon stared at him for a few more seconds, "Hm....."

His stare then went on to the Lannisters who were at another table, Lord Jason accidentally made eye contact with him and immediately gave him the trademark golden lion smirk, raising his cup. Tyland, his twin, also did the same, albeit awkwardly.

Baelon silently nodded at them and then looked to his left, seeing House Hightower sitting on their table. He noticed Ser Gwayne and Lord Ormund, conversing and as soon as they saw that he was looking at them, they both gave him a silent nod with neutral looks on their faces.

While all this happened, Helaena was simply speaking to the Ladies, which was not something that anyone was used to. They took this opportunity to finally connect with the Princess, which was so rare that it would make any maiden jealous. Queen Alicent was looking at this, a bright smile on her face. Little did they know that Baelon was currently rallying supporters for a potential crisis in pure silence.

Prince Daemon Targaryen walked up to the table, prompting the young Ladies to squirm away.

"Ah...." Daemon said as he gave Helaena a smile, "My dear Nephew and Niece.....I am glad to see the two of you like this.....I hope this is the start of a wonderful future for you."

Helaena nodded awkwardly, "T-Thank you, Uncle."

He snapped his fingers and some servants approached with a large chest, placing it on the table and beginning to open it.

"A gift. For the two of you." Daemon said, "Straight from Essos. I've personally went and retrieved this."

The servants pulled out what looked like silk robes, black and white with the Targaryen Crest embroidered in them.

"Is that...." Helaena said, "Silk...?"

"Yes, only the best for my beloved Niece." He said, "It is nightwear, the two of you can match from now on, haha...that's not all."

The servants pulled out a small box and handed it to Helaena.

Helaena took it and looked at her uncle, "This is....?"

"Open it." Daemon said

Helaena opened it and saw that it was a necklace, the pendant made out of what looked like valyrian steel and fashioned in Dreamfyre's head.

Helaena widened her eyes, "A-A Valyrian Steel necklace....?" she said, "Uncle...."

"And for my nephew...." Daemon gestured at the servant

The servant pulled out what looked like a dagger, similar to the one that Viserys currently had, except this one's scabbard was pure black with a single red Targaryen sigil on it.

Baelon took it and frowned, "And this...?" He said as he drew it, "Valyrian Steel?"

"Yes. It looks similar to your Father's, no?" Daemon said

The blade was a bit longer and jagged, which Baelon found strange.

"Thank you, Uncle." Baelon said

Daemon bowed slightly, "For the Heir...and his wife." He said with a chuckle, "If you excuse me, I will take my leave."

As the servants pulled the chest away, Viserys leaned in closer to Baelon, he had been sitting next to him the entire time.

"You're tense." Viserys told his son as he sheathed the blade, "What is the matter?"

"Nothing." Baelon said as he looked at the scabbard of the blade, "I'm fine."

"Well, this will loosen you up, eh?" Viserys said as he took a sip from his cup and stood up, "Everyone!!"

As the King called for the Lords to listen, everyone stopped what they were doing and looked over at the main table. Viserys then quickly made his way around the table and stood on the steps that led up to it.

Baelon frowned as he looked at his father, "What are you doing?" He whispered

Viserys cleared his throat, "Alright...." He said as he faced everyone else, "As you all know, I am the King, hehe..."

There was a bit of chuckling and laughing from the crowd. They had apparently found that comment funny.

Viserys smiled and placed his hands behind his back, "And it is quite clear that I am not a dragonrider or a warrior, which may or may not be an issue for some of you." He continued, "Which does not take away from the fact that I am the King, no? Nevertheless, it is as the King that I have decided upon this. And make no mistake, I spent...a long time pondering if this was even the right idea.....and I came to the conclusion.....that.....Yes. Yes it is."

He snapped his fingers and two servants approached with a large chest and as Viserys stepped to the side, they placed it on the base of the steps.

"My Son, Baelon Targaryen...." Viserys said, "Is not just my Heir, the Future of the Realm and our Family.....He is the Rider of Balerion, The Black Dread. And in recent events, he's made sure that everyone was reminded of what that meant....."

He scanned the crowd, checking to see if there was any reaction to that. There was not.

"Balerion is a Symbol. Of not just what the Targaryens are....he is a symbol of who Aegon The Conqueror was." He continued as the servants opened the chest, "And another Symbol of The King is none other than his sword...."

The servants then slowly and gently pulled out a sheathed Blackfyre, which caused Baelon to stand up, his eyes widening slightly.

"Father...." He started

The King grabbed the sword, "This sword is mine, by right." He said with a slight smile before looking to the crowd, "And with my right as King, I can gift it to anyone I deem worthy. Is that a problem?"

Nobody said a word, they merely stared in awe of what they knew was about to happen.

"Baelon." Viserys said, "Come."

Baelon slowly walked around the table and stood on the base of the steps where Viserys stood, holding Blackfyre with two hands.

"F-Father....I....." He said as he slowly got to one knee, "I do not know what to say...."

"You are my son, Baelon." Viserys said, "You, Balerion's Rider, deserve this more than I do."

Viserys slowly handed Blackfyre to Baelon who took it with both hands, silence filled the gardens as this happened. Everyone was shocked, experiencing something that they could not fathom. However, it was not like they did not accept it. It was just that they did not expect it.

Daemon Targaryen slowly stood up and began to clap, starting a long chain of applause that filled the entirety of the gardens.

Baelon held Blackfyre as he slowly stood up, "Thank you....Father...." He said

Viserys patted his shoulder, "Balerion....Blackfyre...the Symbols of a King...something you will be one day." He said, "You will be a great King, Baelon. A different one that I, but a great one indeed."

Baelon looked at his father, "M-May I...?"

Viserys nodded and stepped back, "Of course!"

Baelon then drew the sword, pointing it upwards and staring at it with awe. After so long of constantly obsessing with the legendary Targaryen sword, it was finally in his hands. And this was the best way he could possibly had gotten it due to the fact that he did not want to have it because his father died.

Baelon smiled, "Finally...." He whispered, "You are mine...."

"Well then!" Viserys said, "Let us continue the festivities!!!"

*********

Baelon was sitting down, a smile on his face as he held Blackfyre on his lap. He said nothing but it was quite obvious that his mood instantly changed, as Viserys had intended.

"I am happy for you, Baelon." Helaena said with a smile

Baelon looked at her, "Thank you." He said before leaning into her ear to whisper, "You and I will be alone for the night. How do you wish to spend it? I'll be all yours, you know?"

The Princess's face went red, "I....." She stammered, "What?"

"I'm joking." Baelon chuckled, "Want to read some books? Wearing the robes uncle got us?"

Helaena placed her hands on her cheeks, trying to calm down as she breathed a bit hard, "I....uhm..." she said, "That sounds.....lovely....."

Baelon nodded, "Then it is settled." He said as he placed his hand on her lap, "I love you."

"I...." She said, "I love you as well, Baelon."

A servant walked over to Baelon and placed a cup of wine right next to him, taking away the other one. Baelon, out of the corner of his eye, noticed that the servant was giving him a strange look before scurrying off.

This immediately alarmed him and he looked at the cup, "What?" He muttered

He then saw that there was something underneath the cup, which was slightly tilted. He picked the cup up and quickly grabbed what looked like a folded paper.

He looked around, seeing where the servant had gone to. He then scanned the gardens to see if something seemed out of place, noticing that Rhaenyra was standing up, speaking to her Father as this happened. He then saw that past them, his brother Aegon was leaning against a pillar, speaking to what looked like his betrothed, Lady Blackwood. He didn't think much of it and immediately dismissed it.

Baelon's gaze then shifted to Trevor Celtigar, Rhaenyra's Husband. His brother-in-law was speaking to his daughter, Aemma, when he noticed the Prince's gaze. Trevor then smiled slightly and gave him a nod in an innocent way.

Despite this, Baelon got a bad feeling.

He placed the cup down and unfolded the paper, reading its contents:

"The Wine was intended for you. I switched it."

He frowned, "What?" He muttered, "W-Who?"

There was then a loud crash. Baelon looked up to see that Ser Laenor Velaryon was crouching over his father.

"Someone help!!!" Laenor shouted

Princess Rhaenys ran over from where she was, "Corlys!!"

Baelon stood up and watched that Corlys was convulsing violently, blood pouring out of his mouth and eyes as he tried to gasp for air.

Alicent quickly shielded Helaena's face, "B-Baelon!" She exclaimed

Viserys ran over to him, "Corlys!!" He said as he looked around, "Where is Orwyle?!"

As the guards quickly rushed over, Baelon noticed someone had gone missing.

He narrowed his eyes, "Trevor...." He said,

"You....bastard....!!"
