Chapter 22 - Gathering Allies

The morning after her conversation with Kite, Lumi awoke with a renewed sense of purpose. The knowledge that she was not only in possession of the Hammer of Winter's Fury, but also potentially part of a larger struggle involving all eight legendary artifacts, weighed heavily on her. However, it also clarified her next steps—she needed to understand the full extent of what she was up against and find allies who could help her protect the hammer.

As she got ready for the day, Lumi felt a subtle change in the air around her. It was as if the hammer, still wrapped in cloth and resting in her satchel, was more present, more aware. She shook off the feeling as nerves—after all, she had a lot on her mind.

After her morning classes, Lumi met with June and Heath in the academy courtyard. The air was crisp, with a slight chill that hinted at the coming winter. The three of them sat on a bench near one of the academy's ornate fountains, the sound of trickling water providing a calming backdrop to their conversation.

June was the first to speak, her usual energy tempered by concern. "So, what's the plan, Lumi? We know Erick's got his eye on you, and that's bad enough, but with what you found out about the hammer, things are getting serious."

Lumi nodded, her expression thoughtful. "We need more information—about the other artifacts, about anyone who might be searching for them. We can't just sit back and wait for something to happen. We need to be proactive."

Heath, ever the strategist, leaned forward, his brow furrowed. "We should start by identifying anyone at the academy who might know more about these artifacts. There could be professors, students, or even staff members who have information we don't. We need to gather as much intel as possible."

June nodded in agreement. "And we need to be careful who we trust. If Erick is involved, we can't risk tipping him off to what we're doing."

Lumi appreciated their support, but she also knew they were right—caution was paramount. "Let's start by looking into the history department. There are bound to be professors who specialize in ancient artifacts and magic. If we're lucky, we might find someone who knows more about the eight legendary artifacts without raising too many suspicions."

Heath agreed. "I'll also see what I can find out through some of the older students. Discreetly, of course. There are always rumors and old stories floating around. Someone might know something useful."

June's eyes lit up with determination. "And I'll keep an ear out for any chatter about Erick. He's bound to slip up at some point, and when he does, we'll be ready."

Lumi felt a surge of gratitude toward her friends. They were willing to help her, even though the risks were great. Together, they could uncover the truth and protect the hammer from those who sought to misuse it.

"Thank you, both of you," Lumi said, her voice filled with sincerity. "I couldn't do this without you."

June grinned, her usual enthusiasm returning. "Hey, we're in this together, right? Besides, this is way more exciting than any of the boring stuff we learn in class!"

Heath chuckled softly, though his expression remained serious. "Exciting, yes. But also dangerous. We need to be ready for whatever comes next."

As they continued discussing their plans, Lumi felt a strange sensation, almost like a whisper at the back of her mind. She paused, frowning slightly as she tried to focus on it. The sensation grew stronger, forming into words that echoed within her thoughts—only this time, they were far from calm.

"Hey, you with the fuzzy thoughts—yeah, you, Lumi! You really ought to pay more attention when I'm trying to talk to you. I'm not just some pretty hammer, you know!"

Lumi nearly jumped out of her seat. The voice was clear and undeniably sassy, filled with a personality that she hadn't expected at all. The realization hit her quickly—the voice was coming from the Hammer of Winter's Fury.

"Who… who are you?" Lumi asked mentally, her shock evident as she reached out to the presence.

"Seriously? I'm your magical, ancient, super-powerful artifact, and you don't even know my name? Ugh, fine, I'll introduce myself. The name's Glaciel, sweetheart. And yes, I'm as fabulous as I sound." The voice, now identified as Glaciel, dripped with a playful sarcasm that was impossible to miss.

Lumi was stunned, trying to reconcile the powerful artifact she had been entrusted with and the lively, almost playful personality it now exhibited. "Glaciel… okay, Glaciel. Why are you talking to me now?"

"Why am I talking to you? Honey, because you need it! Look, I've been around the block a few times—millennia, actually—and I can tell you, you're in over your head if you think you can handle this alone. You've got a serious baddie after you, and no offense, but you're not exactly armed with all the facts. That's where I come in, doll."

Lumi blinked, trying to process everything Glaciel was saying. "You mean Erick? Yeah, I know he's dangerous. But I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do."

"Of course you're not sure—that's why I'm here to help. Let's get one thing straight: you and I, we're a team now. And lucky for you, I'm the best partner you could ask for. I know all the dirt on these so-called 'legendary artifacts.' We're talking ancient history, juicy secrets, the whole shebang. But first, you've gotta trust me, and more importantly, trust yourself."

Lumi felt a mix of relief and amusement at Glaciel's attitude. "Okay, Glaciel. I'm listening. What should we do about Erick?"

"First of all, don't let him get his grubby little hands on any more artifacts, got it? That guy's got the ego the size of a frost giant and the common sense of a snowflake in a volcano. If he gets even one more artifact, we're all in trouble. Second, you need to learn how to really use my power—not just swinging me around like some oversized club. I've got skills, girl, and it's time you started tapping into them."

Lumi couldn't help but smile at Glaciel's sass. The hammer was certainly not what she had expected, but maybe that was a good thing. "I'll do my best. What about my friends? Can they help?"

"Your friends are cool—literally, in June's case—but they can't do this for you. They can have your back, sure, but when it comes down to it, you're the one who has to wield me. And if you ever need some advice—or just a pep talk—you know where to find me. Spoiler alert: I'm always in your head." Glaciel's tone was teasing, but Lumi could feel the seriousness beneath it.

Lumi nodded slightly, though she knew the spirit of the hammer could sense her understanding. "Thanks, Glaciel. I'm glad you're on my side."

"Sweetheart, I'm always on the side of whoever's wielding me—so long as they're not an idiot. Now, let's go out there and kick some butt. We've got a world to save, after all."

The connection slowly faded, Glaciel's voice growing distant until it was gone, leaving Lumi with her thoughts. She realized that her friends had been watching her closely, concern etched on their faces.

"Lumi?" June asked hesitantly. "Are you okay? You zoned out for a second there."

Lumi blinked, refocusing on her surroundings. "I'm fine," she said quickly, though the encounter had shaken her more than she cared to admit. "I just… I think I'm beginning to understand the hammer more. It's like… it's alive, in a way. And it's trying to help."

Heath raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "That's… interesting. And potentially useful. If the hammer can communicate with you, it might be able to warn us of dangers we're not aware of."

June's eyes widened with excitement. "That's amazing, Lumi! You've got a legendary artifact that can actually talk to you? This just keeps getting cooler and cooler!"

Lumi smiled faintly at her friend's enthusiasm, but the weight of Glaciel's warning still pressed heavily on her mind. The spirit of the hammer had made it clear—Erick's pursuit of the artifacts was a danger to everyone, and it was up to Lumi and her friends to stop him.

With their plan set, the trio prepared to take the next steps in their quest. Lumi knew the dangers they faced were growing, but she also felt a renewed sense of purpose. She wasn't just protecting the hammer—she was part of something much larger, a struggle that could determine the fate of the world.

As the night fell and the academy's lights flickered on, Lumi stood with her friends, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. They had allies to find, secrets to uncover, and enemies to thwart. The journey would be long and perilous, but Lumi was no longer afraid.
