The elevator door dinged open and the footsteps walked onto the roof.
This is it.
He breathed deeply before clenching and unclenching his fists. He then walked towards the edge of the skyscraper.
There was not a soul in sight.
Just him and the dark night.
The lights from taller buildings flashed, lighting that part of the sky in red, blue and green colors.
He turned his head.
Fireworks were being displayed in bright colorful bangs in another part of the city.
He hesitated when he got to the edge and looked down at his palms as if the past began to play out on it.
"Then you're not living." She laughed the silly way she used to and closed an eye as she pointed at him. "You're just killing time."
He closed his eyes.
"I get why your fans love you now." She jumped up childishly and clapped her hands.
Daehyun chuckled as he threw his head back. She was so childish.
"All right, tell me. Why?" he asked amused.
"They're addicted to the way you pretend, don't you think?"
Daehyun turned to her.
Her large brown unblinking eyes stared at him in childish wonder.
He smiled bitterly and looked down.
"How do you act so child-like yet speak so maturely at the same time?" he asked in a quiet tone.
"What?" She blinked.
Daehyun chuckled.
"What?!" she demanded. "I didn't hear you! Say it again!"
Daehyun laughed as she playfully hit him. "Forget it. You're daft."
"Hey!" was the protest he got.
Tears rolled down his cheeks and he cleaned them with the sleeve of the with T-shirt he was wearing.
"When you're least expecting it. . ." Daehyun smiled sardonically. He looked up at the night sky again. "Bad luck seems to come all at once in the worst situations."
Daehyun stepped up to the edge of the roof.
The air seemed colder there just like it was three days ago when he had a conversation with Gunwoo;
"Daehyun-ah, what are you doing outside?" Gunwoo asked as he walked up to him.
"Isn't it too cold? I'm practically freezing." Gunwoo shivered as he stood by Daehyun's side underneath the falling snow.
"Cold?" Daehyun caught a snowflake and watched it as it melted on his gloved palm.
"I can't feel it," Daehyun smiled a bit but it was tinged with bitterness. "I can't feel anything at all."
He clenched the fist that previously held the melted snowflake.
"Maybe because it's colder in my heart, that's why I can't feel it anymore."
Daehyun then turned to face Gunwoo, "This cold world broke my heart before I even had the chance to live without scars. Life showed me the reality of death, before I even knew to love myself."
"Daehyun-ah. . ." Gunwoo sighed sadly and lowered his head.
Even now in the present, his words still felt true.
Daehyun exhaled before stepping a foot forward on the ridge.
He closed his eyes and opened them once more.
"I really picked a wrong time to be human," he murmured as he ran his right hand through his blond hair.
"No one. . .would miss me anyway." Daehyun looked downcast. "I have no one now."
The billboard hanging from another high building lit up at that particular time, on it was his picture with a happy birthday scribbled on it.
'Happy 23rd birthday Daehyun,' the caption read.
Daehyun looked at it for a long while before he slightly tilted his head.
"Hmm. . ." he hummed as he scrutinized his picture that was on the billboard.
"They addressed it wrong," he finally decided what was wrong with the caption. "It ought to be 'With loving memory: Daehyun.'"
"That's how it will be. . .next year," Daehyun muttered to himself.
As he raised his other leg to jump off the building, he got yanked back violently to the safety of the roof.
Daehyun landed on the floor with a thud and his head hit the ground hard.
"Ow." A groan emitted from him while his eyes opened in slits to see who had tugged him back.
Jiwon, a fellow band mate, was on the ground beside him. He had also fallen down when he yanked Daehyun back.
Sudden hurried footsteps were heard running their way and soon two boys emerged, more of them.
"Daehyun! Thank goodness we found you!" Gunwoo exclaimed as he bent to catch his breath. It was obvious he had been running.
"We were worried sick dude," Minho panted as well.
Within the blink of an eye Jiwon was up and he had grabbed a fistful of Daehyun's shirt, pulling him to his feet as well.
"You insensitive idiot!" he roared at Daehyun with anger, "You wanted to take your life, huh? Is that what you wanted?!"
Daehyun gave a lazy smirk. "Why? Will you grant my wish to come true?"
Jiwon balled his fist and landed a blow on Daehyun which caused him to stumble backwards.
The bruise from the strike evident on his pale face didn't deter him at all. He moved closer to Jiwon, his taunting only increasing by the moment.
"Did I perhaps touch a nerve?" Daehyun went on, "Ah, I see. It would be so burdensome since we're in the prime of our careers, right?"
Minho scoffed while Gunwoo frowned.
"What in world are you insinuating?!" Gunwoo yelled but Daehyun's gaze didn't swerve from Jiwon whose rage could clearly be seen.
"Stop it," Jiwon warned in a dangerous tone.
"Why though? Did you think anyone meant anything to me?" Daehyun sniggered maniacally.
"Shut up already!" Jiwon screamed before tackling Daehyun to the ground and raining punches on him.
"Jiwon! Stop it!" Gunwoo shouted alarmed.
Minho was least surprised that Jiwon would hit Daehyun.
He stood and watched with folded arms as Gunwoo tried to get Jiwon off Daehyun.
Daehyun didn't even try to push Jiwon off. He just kept chuckling snidely as Jiwon's bloodied fist kept hitting his face.
"Is that the best you can do?" Daehyun coughed out blood as he drawled out, "You're pathetic."
"Get off him!" Gunwoo grunted as he tried to pull Jiwon away from Daehyun. "You're hurting him!"
"You bastard! Damn you!" Jiwon was shouting as he continued hitting Daehyun.
Minho just stared at them.
"Hitting him won't solve anything!" Gunwoo continued yelling and dragging the resisting Jiwon away.
Since Jiwon was stronger than Gunwoo because he had more muscle-build than the others, it was relatively easy to slip out of Gunwoo's hold and pounce on Daehyun who was still lying on the ground.
"Why'd you save him if you're just going to kill him yourself again?!" Gunwoo huffed at Jiwon as he got shoved away when he tried to pull Jiwon's arm.
"Minho-ah, help me over here!" Gunwoo growled at Minho who stood cleaning his ears.
"Meh. Not interested," Minho yawned as he stretched.
"Besides he-" Minho was saying but stopped suddenly and turned back when the elevator door pinged open and a youth stepped out.
He resonated with the darkness and his black orbs glistened with coldness.
Gunwoo also looked back but Jiwon still went on punching Daehyun.
"Ah. . .Minsoo-hyung, you should have just taken the stairs with us. I can't believe you waited for the elevator maintenance checkup to be done," Minho was saying in a cheerful tone as he brushed away a falling lock of hair. "And it would have been-"
Minsoo walked past him giving him no indication that he was talking whatsoever.
"Cocky bastard," Minho muttered under his breath.
"Minsoo-ah, Jiwon won't stop hitting Daehyun and I think we should-" Gunwoo was saying but Minsoo walked past him as well.
Gunwoo sighed and rolled his eyes slightly. Minsoo was so cold hearted. Couldn't even he act like he was listening?
Minsoo stopped some feet away from where Daehyun and Jiwon were.
"Jiwon," Minsoo said curtly. "Leave him."
That single command made Jiwon grit his teeth before he let go of Daehyun and stood up.
Jiwon glared at Daehyun before going to pick up his jacket where he had abandoned it at the entrance earlier on when he came in and saw that Daehyun was about to jump off the building.
Gunwoo's mouth dropped open in surprise.
He had been trying to get Jiwon off Daehyun for eternity and Minsoo just said a word and Jiwon listened? He then turned to shoot a glare at Jiwon. He was upset because he was the eldest amongst the five of them while Minsoo came in second in age after him.
Daehyun pushed most of his weight to his elbows so that it would allow him to raise his head.
His face was already full of bruises. On his forehead, cheeks everywhere.
Daehyun lifted his eyes to meet Minsoo's cold gaze.
They kept staring at each other for a long while.
Minsoo kept regarding Daehyun with a rigid look.
After a while, Minsoo scoffed slightly and turned his back at Daehyun.
He then started to walk away and they all watched him. But he stopped before he got to the entrance door.
Minsoo didn't glance back as he addressed Jiwon.
"You should've. . ."
The air was pregnant with silent as they awaited the remainder of his words. He was the leader of their group after all.
". . .let him jump."
With those words he left.
"Hey! Minsoo-hyung!" Minho yelled after him before sighing.
He and Daehyun always disregarded the fact they were a team and did and said whatever they wanted. The consequences didn't matter to them at all.
Daehyun got to his feet and scoffed then spat out a small amount of blood before wiping the cut on his lip.
"Where do you think you're going, you brat?!" Jiwon yelled at him as he started heading for the exit in a determined manner.
"Away from you," Daehyun replied sourly without turning back.
"Let's follow him quickly!" Gunwoo stated in a worried tone as Daehyun disappeared down the other side of the door. Jiwon swore under his breath before chasing after Daehyun.
Gunwoo was about leaving when he noticed Minho wasn't following them.
"Minho?" he called inquiringly.
"It's peaceful up here." Minho looked around wistfully. "The stars are pretty too."
Gunwoo's urgent gaze flickered to the door before returning to rest on Minho who was now sitting on the edge of the building with his head tilted and eyes closed.
"Are you going to be okay here," Gunwoo asked, ". . .alone?"
Minho turned back and met his questioning gaze. 'You won't do anything stupid would you?' was what Gunwoo seemed to say.
"I'll be fine." Minho looked at the sky again. "I'm tired. . .I just-"
He sighed before continuing. "I just want to rest for a bit."
Gunwoo nodded before running off, letting the door close with a soft bang behind him.
