Chapter 19 - Bridges Burned

The university campus was alive with the hustle and bustle of students preparing for the end-of-year festivities. Amid the excitement, Liam found himself grappling with a sense of unease. The romantic subplot between Eva and himself had stirred unexpected emotions, and Mei's growing jealousy was a constant reminder of the delicate balance between love and friendship.

Liam had hoped that time would ease the tension, but the opposite seemed to be true. Every glance from Mei, every whispered conversation behind his back, made it clear that the situation was far from resolved. He and Eva had tried to keep their budding romance discreet, but rumors had a way of spreading like wildfire.

As he walked across campus towards the library, where he had arranged to meet Eva, Liam's mind was heavy with thoughts of Mei. Their friendship had always been important to him, and he hated the idea of causing her pain. Yet, he couldn't ignore his own feelings, which had grown deeper with Eva.

"Liam!" Eva's voice called out, pulling him from his thoughts. He looked up to see her approaching with a bright smile, her eyes alight with excitement.

"Hey," Liam said, returning the smile. "How's it going?"

Eva's eyes sparkled as she took his hand. "I'm good! I've been thinking about us—about what we're doing after graduation. Have you thought about it?"

Liam hesitated, feeling the weight of the conversation. "A little. I'm not sure what the future holds, but I'm hoping it involves you."

Eva's smile widened, and she squeezed his hand. "I hope so too."

They walked into the library together, finding a quiet corner where they could talk without interruptions. The space was filled with the soft rustling of pages and the occasional murmur of students studying.

"I've been meaning to ask," Eva began, her voice low, "how are things with Mei? I know this whole situation can't be easy."

Liam sighed, leaning back in his chair. "It's complicated. Mei's been distant lately, and I know it's because of us. I never wanted to hurt her, but I also can't deny how I feel about you."

Eva nodded, understanding in her eyes. "I know, Liam. And I appreciate that you're honest with me. We'll get through this, but we need to find a way to address it with Mei. It's not fair to keep her in the dark."

Liam agreed. "You're right. I've been putting it off, hoping things would sort themselves out, but I know that's not fair to anyone involved."

As they continued to talk, Liam's phone buzzed with a message. It was from Mei. His heart sank as he read it: "Can we talk? It's important."

Liam showed the message to Eva, who nodded encouragingly. "You should go. It's time to clear the air."

With a deep breath, Liam stood up, giving Eva a reassuring smile. "I'll be back soon."

He made his way to the designated meeting spot, a quiet spot under a large oak tree near the edge of campus. Mei was already there, her arms crossed and her expression unreadable.

"Mei," Liam said as he approached. "Thanks for meeting me."

Mei looked up, her eyes guarded. "Liam, I… I needed to talk to you about everything that's been going on. I feel like we're losing something important."

Liam took a seat beside her, trying to find the right words. "I never meant for things to get this way. I care about you deeply, and I don't want to lose our friendship."

Mei's gaze softened slightly. "I know you care. But it feels like everything's changed, and I don't know how to fit into this new reality. I've seen the way you look at Eva, and I can't ignore that."

Liam nodded, his heart heavy. "I understand. This wasn't easy for any of us. I wish things could be different, but I also can't deny my feelings for Eva. I'm sorry for how things have turned out."

Mei took a deep breath, her eyes brimming with tears. "It's not just about you and Eva. It's about me feeling left out and abandoned. I thought we had something special, and now I'm struggling to understand where I fit in."

Liam reached out, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "You're important to me, Mei. I don't want to lose that. Maybe we can find a way to rebuild our friendship, even if things are different."

Mei wiped away a tear and nodded slowly. "I'd like that. But it's going to take time. I need to figure out how to adjust to this new dynamic."

Liam agreed. "Take all the time you need. I'll be here, and I want to support you through this."

As they parted ways, Liam felt a sense of relief mixed with lingering sadness. The conversation with Mei hadn't resolved everything, but it was a start. He knew that healing and rebuilding would take time, but he was hopeful that their friendship could survive the storm.

Returning to the library, Liam found Eva waiting for him, her expression full of concern.

"How did it go?" she asked softly.

Liam smiled weakly. "It was difficult, but I think we're making progress. Mei needs time, but we're on the path to understanding each other again."

Eva nodded, her eyes filled with compassion. "I'm proud of you for facing it head-on. We'll get through this together."

As they walked out of the library hand in hand, Liam felt a renewed sense of hope. The road ahead was uncertain, but he was determined to navigate it with honesty and care. The connections that mattered most to him were worth fighting for, and he was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
