Chapter 33 - Chapter 33: The Safehouse

The helicopter touched down with a jarring thud, the rotors slicing through the night air as the pilot brought the aircraft to a steady hover before setting it down on a hidden clearing. The safehouse loomed in the shadows ahead, a low, nondescript building nestled in the thick of the trees. It was designed to be unremarkable, a place that could disappear into the landscape, far from the eyes of anyone who might come looking.

Ava's heart was still racing as the adrenaline ebbed, leaving her shaken and exhausted. She forced herself to focus, to push down the fear gnawing at the edges of her mind. They were on the ground now, but the danger hadn't passed. Jaxon was still out there, and every second that ticked by without knowing where he was felt like an eternity.

The moment the helicopter settled, Caleb was already unbuckling himself, his movements quick and efficient. He shot a glance back at Ava, his expression a mix of urgency and concern. "We need to get inside. It's not safe out here."

Ava nodded, though her thoughts were still with Jaxon. She knew Caleb was right they couldn't help Jaxon if they were caught out in the open. But that didn't make it any easier to leave him behind.

As the helicopter's rotors slowed, the pilot signaled for them to disembark. Caleb was the first to jump out, extending a hand to Ava to help her down. Her legs felt shaky beneath her, but she took his hand, letting him steady her as she stepped onto the damp ground. The air was cool and heavy with the scent of pine and earth, a stark contrast to the heat and chaos they had just escaped.

The pilot gave them a quick nod before securing the helicopter and moving toward the safehouse entrance. Caleb kept a firm grip on Ava's arm, guiding her across the clearing. Her thoughts were a whirlwind, fragments of the night's events flashing through her mind like a twisted montage. The chase, the explosion, the gunfire it all felt surreal, like a nightmare she couldn't wake up from.

But this was real. Too real.

The safehouse door opened with a creak, and the pilot stepped inside first, motioning for them to follow. The interior was dimly lit, the walls lined with shelves of supplies and equipment. It wasn't large, but it was well fortified a refuge for situations just like this. There was no sign of luxury, just the bare essentials needed to survive and stay off the grid.

Caleb ushered Ava inside, his eyes sweeping the room with the practiced vigilance of someone who had spent years in high stakes situations. He was on edge, she could tell, but his calm demeanor was a lifeline in the storm of chaos that had engulfed them.

The pilot, a grizzled man in his late forties, with salt and pepper hair and a no nonsense air, closed the door behind them, sealing them off from the outside world. He turned to Caleb with a grim expression. "We're clear for now, but it won't be long before they start looking. We need to figure out our next move."

Caleb nodded, his jaw tight. "Agreed. We need to locate Jaxon and get him out of there. We can't leave him behind."

Ava's stomach twisted at the mention of Jaxon's name. She couldn't shake the image of him tied up in that warehouse, the fear and determination in his eyes as he'd urged her to escape. She had managed to get away, but he was still out there, still in the hands of people who wouldn't hesitate to kill him.

"We have to find him," Ava said, her voice strained but resolute. "Whatever it takes, we have to bring him back."

The pilot exchanged a glance with Caleb, his expression unreadable. "Easier said than done. They'll be on high alert after what just happened. We've lost the element of surprise."

"I don't care," Ava snapped, her fear giving way to anger. "I'm not leaving him out there."

Caleb placed a calming hand on her shoulder, his touch gentle despite the tension in his posture. "We're not giving up, Ava. But we need to be smart about this. If we rush in without a plan, we could all end up dead."

The reality of his words hit her like a punch to the gut, and Ava bit her lip to keep the tears at bay. She knew Caleb was right, but it didn't make the waiting any easier. The thought of Jaxon suffering, possibly dying, because they hadn't acted quickly enough was unbearable.

"We need intel," Caleb continued, turning back to the pilot. "Do we have any contacts in the area who can give us an update on the situation?"

The pilot nodded, already moving toward a small console at the far end of the room. "I'll reach out to our network. We might be able to get a location on Jaxon, but it's going to take time."

Ava's hands clenched into fists at her sides, her knuckles turning white. Time. It was the one thing they didn't have. Every second that passed felt like an eternity, and with each one, the knot of fear in her chest tightened.

Caleb must have seen the turmoil in her eyes because he stepped closer, his voice low and soothing. "Ava, we'll find him. We will. But you need to hold it together. We need you."

She nodded, though the effort of keeping her emotions in check felt like trying to hold back a tidal wave. Caleb was right they couldn't afford to lose their heads now. They had to stay focused, had to think clearly if they were going to save Jaxon.

The pilot was busy at the console, his fingers flying over the keys as he accessed their network. Ava could hear the low murmur of his voice as he made contact with someone on the other end, but she couldn't make out the details of the conversation. All she could do was wait, her nerves frayed to the breaking point.

Minutes ticked by, each one stretching out longer than the last. Ava's mind raced, imagining all the possible scenarios Jaxon could be facing. Was he still at the warehouse? Had they moved him to another location? Was he injured or worse?

Finally, the pilot turned back to them, his expression grave. "I've got a location. They're holding him at a different site now, about twenty miles from here. It's a compound, heavily guarded."

Ava's heart lurched, a mixture of relief and dread flooding through her. They knew where Jaxon was but getting to him would be another story. The odds were stacked against them, and the thought of what they might find when they got there filled her with fear.

Caleb's face hardened with resolve. "We'll need a plan, and we'll need to move fast. The longer we wait, the more dangerous this becomes."

The pilot nodded in agreement. "We'll need to approach with extreme caution. This isn't just a rescue mission it's a war zone."

Ava's breath caught in her throat. A war zone. The words sent a chill down her spine, but she pushed the fear aside. Jaxon was out there, alone and in danger, and she couldn't afford to let her emotions get in the way. She had to be strong, had to be ready for whatever lay ahead.

Caleb looked at her, his eyes filled with determination. "We're going to bring him back, Ava. I promise you that."

Ava nodded, her resolve hardening like steel. "Then let's not waste any more time."

The pilot turned back to the console, making final preparations as Caleb began laying out their plan of attack. Ava listened intently, absorbing every detail, every instruction. There was no room for error, this mission had to go perfectly, or they could lose everything.

The tension in the room was palpable, each of them acutely aware of the stakes. The next few hours would determine everything their survival, Jaxon's fate, the outcome of a battle that had been brewing for far too long.

As they finalized their preparations, Ava couldn't help but glance out the small window, where the night sky was just beginning to lighten with the first hints of dawn. The safehouse was a temporary refuge, a brief pause in the storm, but the real fight was still to come.

And when it did, Ava knew there would be no turning back.

As the first light of day began to creep over the horizon, they moved out, their hearts heavy with the weight of what lay ahead. The safehouse door closed behind them with a final, resolute click, sealing them off from the safety it offered.

Ava steeled herself for what was to come, the fear and uncertainty replaced by a fierce determination.

They were going to bring Jaxon back.

No matter what it took.
