Chapter 15 - Chapter 15

Ava woke to the sound of her phone vibrating on the nightstand, the harsh buzz pulling her out of a deep, restless sleep. For a moment, she was disoriented, the weight of the previous day's events settling over her like a heavy blanket. Jaxon's arm was draped over her waist, his steady breathing a comforting rhythm against her back. The warmth of his body should have been reassuring, but the unease that had plagued her the night before had only grown stronger.

She reached for her phone, squinting at the screen in the dim light. The message was from her private investigator, the one she had hired to dig into Jaxon's past. Her heart skipped a beat as she opened the message, a sense of foreboding tightening in her chest.

I've found something. We need to talk.

Ava's stomach twisted with anxiety. She had known this moment was coming, had prepared herself for it, but now that it was here, she wasn't sure she was ready to face whatever truth the investigator had uncovered. She glanced over at Jaxon, still asleep beside her, his face peaceful and unguarded. How much of his past had he kept hidden, and how much more was there that she didn't know?

Carefully, she slipped out of bed, not wanting to wake him. She needed to think, to clear her head before she confronted him with whatever new information she was about to learn. The cool air of the early morning sent a shiver down her spine as she pulled on a robe and quietly left the bedroom, her phone clutched tightly in her hand.

Ava made her way to the living room, her thoughts racing as she dialed the investigator's number. The call connected almost immediately, the voice on the other end brisk and businesslike.

"Ms. Sinclair," the investigator greeted her. "I've uncovered some new information about Jaxon Reed, about his connections to his father's criminal activities. I think you're going to want to hear this."

Ava's heart pounded in her chest, the dread she had been feeling solidifying into cold, hard fear. "What did you find?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"There are records old financial transactions, correspondence, even a few photos that link Jaxon to several of his father's known associates," the investigator explained. "It's clear that he was involved in the family business, at least to some extent, before he disappeared and changed his identity. But here's the thing some of these records are recent. There are indications that someone has been trying to pull him back into that world."

Ava's blood ran cold at the implication. She had known that Jaxon's past was complicated, that he had tried to distance himself from his father's criminal empire. But the idea that he might still be entangled in that world, even against his will, was almost too much to bear.

"Are you saying that Jaxon is still involved?" she asked, her voice trembling with the weight of the question.

The investigator hesitated before responding, as if choosing his words carefully. "I'm not saying he's actively participating, but it's clear that he's being targeted. There are people who want him back in the fold, and they're using whatever means necessary to make that happen. The recent activity suggests that they're getting desperate and that they're willing to go to great lengths to get what they want."

Ava's mind spun with the implications of what she was hearing. If Jaxon was being targeted, if there were people actively trying to drag him back into his father's world, then they were both in far more danger than she had realized. And if they knew about her, if they saw her as a weakness, then she was putting everything, her company, her life at risk by staying with him.

"Thank you," Ava managed to say, her voice hollow. "Please continue to monitor the situation. I need to figure out what to do next."

"Of course," the investigator replied. "And Ms. Sinclair be careful. These people don't play by the rules. If they think you're a threat to their plans, they won't hesitate to take action."

Ava ended the call, her hand trembling as she set the phone down. She felt as if the ground had shifted beneath her feet, the stability she had fought so hard to maintain crumbling away. The man she had fallen for, the man she had trusted with her heart, was at the center of a storm that threatened to destroy everything she had built.

For a long moment, she stood there, staring out the window at the city below, the rising sun casting long shadows across the streets. The city had always been her sanctuary, a place where she could control her destiny, but now it felt like a trap, one she couldn't escape from.

The sound of movement behind her brought her back to the present, and she turned to see Jaxon standing in the doorway, his expression filled with concern. He was shirtless, his hair tousled from sleep, but the worry in his eyes was unmistakable.

"Ava," he said softly, crossing the room to stand beside her. "What's wrong?"

She wanted to tell him, wanted to lay everything out on the table and demand answers, but the words caught in her throat. How could she accuse him, when she wasn't even sure what the truth was? How could she confront him with the possibility that he was still involved in the darkness he claimed to have left behind?

Instead, she reached out, placing a hand on his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath her palm. "I'm just… trying to make sense of everything," she said, her voice thick with emotion. "There's so much we don't know, so much that could go wrong."

Jaxon's hand covered hers, his touch warm and reassuring. "We'll figure it out," he promised, his voice filled with quiet determination. "Whatever it takes, we'll get through this together."

Ava wanted to believe him, wanted to trust that their love could withstand the storm that was coming. But as she looked into his eyes, she couldn't shake the feeling that there was something he wasn't telling her, something that could shatter everything they had built.

"Jaxon," she began, her voice trembling, "I need you to be honest with me. Is there anything else I should know? Anything you're still hiding?"

Jaxon's expression tightened, a flicker of something unreadable passing through his eyes. For a moment, she thought he might deflect, might try to protect her from the truth once again. But then, with a heavy sigh, he nodded, his gaze dropping to the floor.

"There are things I haven't told you," he admitted, his voice low. "Things I hoped you'd never have to know. But you deserve the truth, Ava. You deserve to know everything."

Ava's heart pounded in her chest, the fear and anticipation almost too much to bear. She had been waiting for this moment, waiting for him to finally open up to her, but now that it was here, she wasn't sure she was ready to hear what he had to say.

But she had come too far to turn back now. She had made the decision to stand by him, to fight for their future, and that meant facing the darkness head on no matter how terrifying it might be.

"Tell me," she whispered, her voice filled with a mixture of resolve and fear. "I need to know."

Jaxon took a deep breath, his hand tightening around hers as he began to speak. "After I left my father's world, I thought I could start over, build something good, something real. But the people who were loyal to him, his associates they didn't see it that way. To them, I was still Richard Grayson's son, still part of the empire he built. They've been trying to pull me back in ever since, using threats, blackmail, anything they can think of."

Ava listened in silence, her mind reeling with the implications of his words. She had known that Jaxon was being targeted, that there were people who wanted him back in the fold, but hearing it from him made it all the more real.

"They've been escalating," Jaxon continued, his voice strained. "They know about you, Ava. They see you as my weakness, the one thing they can use to control me. I've been doing everything I can to keep you safe, to protect you from them, but I'm running out of options. I don't know how much longer I can keep them at bay."

Ava's breath caught in her throat, the cold fingers of fear wrapping around her heart. She had known the risks of being with Jaxon, had understood that his past was dangerous, but she hadn't realized just how close that danger was or how deeply it could impact her own life.

"What do we do?" she asked, her voice trembling with the weight of the question.

Jaxon's expression hardened, his jaw clenched with determination. "We fight," he said, his voice filled with resolve. "We don't let them win. But we need to be smart about this. We need to stay ahead of them, figure out what their next move is and stop them before they can hurt us."

Ava nodded, her mind already racing with the possibilities. She had always been a strategist, always able to see the angles, and now those skills would be put to the ultimate test. But as much as she wanted to protect Jaxon, to stand by his side and fight for their future, a part of her couldn't help but wonder if they were already too late.

The forces working against them were powerful, and the closer they got to the truth, the more dangerous the situation became. Ava could feel the weight of it all pressing down on her the fear, the uncertainty, the knowledge that one wrong move could cost them everything.

But there was no turning back now. She had made her choice, and she was determined to see it through, no matter what it took.

"We need a plan," Ava said, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her. "We need to figure out who's behind this, what they're after, and how we can stop them. If they're using me to get to you, then we can use that against them. We just have to be smart about it."

Jaxon's eyes darkened with determination, a fire igniting within him as he nodded in agreement. "I'll reach out to my contacts, see what they can dig up. There has to be a way to trace the money, the communications, something that will lead us to whoever's pulling the strings."

Ava's mind was already racing, piecing together the fragments of information they had, trying to see the bigger picture. "And I'll look into our business dealings, any recent transactions or contracts that could have triggered this. If they're trying to undermine us financially, there might be a trail we can follow."

Jaxon looked at her with a mixture of admiration and something deeper, something that spoke of the bond they were forging, one that went beyond mere attraction or desire. "We're in this together, Ava. Whatever happens, we fight as a team."

Ava nodded, her resolve hardening. "As a team."

For the next few hours, they worked side by side, their focus unwavering as they pored over documents, made phone calls, and traced every lead they could find. The tension in the room was palpable, but there was also a sense of unity, of two people coming together to face a common enemy. Every so often, their eyes would meet, and in those brief moments, Ava felt the strength of their connection stronger now, perhaps, than it had ever been.

By mid afternoon, they had made some progress, but it wasn't enough. The pieces of the puzzle were still scattered, and the full picture remained just out of reach. Ava could feel the frustration building, the sense of time slipping away from them as they struggled to stay ahead of their enemies.

It was then that Jaxon's phone rang, the sharp sound cutting through the silence. He answered it immediately, his expression tense as he listened to the voice on the other end.

"What do you have?" he asked, his tone clipped.

Ava watched him closely, her heart pounding as she tried to gauge the gravity of the situation from his reaction. She saw his jaw tighten, his eyes narrowing as he absorbed the information.

"Are you sure?" Jaxon asked, his voice low and dangerous.

There was a pause, and then Jaxon's expression shifted, a cold fury settling over his features. "Send me everything you have," he ordered, before ending the call and turning to Ava.

"What is it?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Jaxon looked at her, his eyes burning with intensity. "They've been trying to frame us, Ava. Planting evidence, setting up deals that would implicate us in illegal activities. They want to take us down, destroy everything we've built and they're using your company as the weapon."

Ava felt the blood drain from her face as the enormity of what he was saying hit her. "My company…?"

Jaxon nodded, his expression grim. "They've been manipulating your accounts, forging documents, setting you up to take the fall for a massive fraud operation. If we don't act fast, they'll have enough to bring you down and take me with you."

Ava's mind raced, the fear she had been holding at bay crashing over her like a tidal wave. Her company, the one thing she had fought so hard to protect, was being used as a pawn in a game she hadn't even known she was playing. And now, everything was on the line.

"We can't let them do this," she said, her voice filled with a fierce determination. "We have to stop them before it's too late."

Jaxon moved closer, his hands gripping her shoulders as he looked into her eyes. "We will. But we need to be smart about this. We need to gather our own evidence, expose them for what they're doing before they can finalize their plan."

Ava nodded, her mind already working through the steps they needed to take. "We'll need help," she said, her voice steady. "Legal experts, financial analysts, people we can trust to work quickly and quietly."

Jaxon agreed, his expression resolute. "I'll make some calls, pull in favors. We'll get the best people on this."

As they began to mobilize, reaching out to their most trusted allies, Ava couldn't shake the feeling that the walls were closing in on them. The enemy was powerful, well connected, and willing to go to any lengths to achieve their goals. But Ava was no stranger to high-stakes battles, and she wasn't about to let them win.

Hours passed in a blur of activity. Calls were made, documents were reviewed, and plans were put into motion. The sense of urgency drove them forward, but so did something deeper a determination to protect what was theirs, to fight for the future they had only just begun to imagine.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the city, Ava and Jaxon finally took a moment to breathe. They had done everything they could for now, but the real battle was still ahead. They would need to be prepared for anything, and they would need to trust in each other completely.

"We're going to get through this," Jaxon said, his voice filled with quiet confidence as he took her hand.

Ava squeezed his hand, drawing strength from his presence. "Yes, we are."

But even as she said the words, the weight of what they were facing pressed down on her. The storm was coming, and when it hit, it would test them in ways they had never imagined. But Ava knew one thing for certain: she wasn't going down without a fight.

As they stood together, staring out at the city that had been both their battlefield and their sanctuary, Ava felt a surge of resolve. They had come too far, sacrificed too much, to let it all be taken from them now. And as long as they were united, as long as they were willing to fight for each other, they would find a way to win.

"Let's get some rest," Jaxon said, his voice softening as he pulled her close. "Tomorrow's going to be a long day."

Ava nodded, leaning into him as they turned away from the window. They had done all they could for now, and tomorrow would bring new challenges, new battles to fight. But for tonight, they would find solace in each other, in the connection that had brought them together in the first place.

As they made their way back to the bedroom, the tension between them easing with every step, Ava couldn't help but feel a flicker of hope. They were stronger together, and as long as they had each other, they could face whatever the future held.

But as the city lights flickered outside, casting long shadows across the room, Ava knew that the road ahead would be anything but easy. The forces working against them were relentless, and the battle was far from over.

But as Jaxon wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close, Ava allowed herself to believe that they could win. They had to. There was too much at stake and they weren't about to let it slip away.

Together, they would face the storm. And together, they would find a way to emerge on the other side, stronger than ever before.
