Chereads / The Incredible Scholar / Chapter 40 - To Prepare

Chapter 40 - To Prepare

Finally arriving back at the familiar Einsvul gates, Viv entered with ease, a peculiar box tucked under the freshly washed cloak.

It seemed while his original clothing was gone, they had been carefully washed during his unexpected stay at the mansion.

On the path back to the dorms, he pulled out the pocket watch that he had also just gotten back, and clicked on the dial to see if Elva would respond.

Surprisingly, even though Vivillian had been gone all day, there was not even a hint of response coming back.

Assuming Elva was busy with his own classes, Viv proceeded like normally to his dorms, using the shortest route possible.

"..."

However, as Viv squinted in the distance, he could see a concerning, yet familiar pink shade fluttering around in the wind.

As he got closer, he could make out the three figures of three very familiar people.

The Crown Prince, Elva and...Lizzy?

Abruptly turning around, he prepared to quickly detour, but was spotted by a distant spectating student.

"Ah, there he is!"

I'm gonna kill you.

The spectator let out a yelp in surprise, before quickly shutting his mouth. Giving a dead eyed stare in return, the student quickly hurried away, wanting to not associate himself with the bigwig's business.

"Oho?"

A somewhat perverted expression appeared on Lizzy's face, as she immediately stopped pestering Elva and barreled towards Viv with ferocity and determination.

Within her eyes, an almost imperceptible sense of cold fury narrowed in on his pitiful figure, not risking him leave her sight for even a moment.

"...."

Dodging to the side like an excellent bull fighter, Viv ran forward, taking advantage of his small body to squeeze through the narrow crevices of the crowd.

 It's too early for this...

There was already one headache he had to deal with, so why add onto another?

Elva seemed to get the same idea, as the both of them booked it towards the boys dorm building, where girls were absolutely 100% prohibited.

 "Agh, just you wait...!"

Holding back a frustrated scream as she saw the both of them escape with ease, her pretty face contorted as she tried to elegantly push past the crowd of mostly girls, but to no avail.

Seeing his talent somehow managing to outmaneuver the charging pink bull, William cleared his throat and slowly disappeared through the crowd.

 'As expected of my talent...'

Inwardly leaving behind these words of encouragement in his mind, William gave a spiritual thumbs up to Viv and slinked away.

Eyewitnesses of that day would have no recollection of just where and how such a prominent figure was able to slip away that quickly.

 "Hah....ha....."

Breathless, the red faced girl with exquisite features angrily kicked her shoe in the ground with scary force, bringing a good chunk of Earth out.

Perhaps it was her way to get back on the two boys, one of them having an affinity with plants and the other with the dirt itself.

She quickly regretted it though, as she unhappily wiped the dirt off her shoe. Turning around to try and find the remaining annoyance that had been blocking her the most, her mouth twisted as Lizzy realized the Prince had run off too.

 "I see how it is..."

—-

A breeze blew throughout the campus, carrying the scent of oncoming spring into its midsts.

Fluttering through a Prince's study, toward a scholar's turning of pages in a library, through the harsh crackle of lightning, stretching into even the deepest crevices of the dirt.

Currently, Viv sat on the second floor of the library, sipping some hot chocolate as he looked down at his journal. He was in a secluded corner of the second floor, so people shouldn't be able to see his plans.

[One of the Main buildings, the old clock tower, the stadium, and the library.]

Despite some strange changes to the characters, the information on Sid's plan matched with what Viv had wrote in his journal long ago about the bombing.

After a long period of contemplation, Viv ultimately decided not to tell Elva about the bombing, or his plans on how to stop it. It was simply too suspicious of him to just suddenly hand over plans of a terrorist bomb threat to an unprepared teen.

Firstly Viv wouldn't know how Elva would react, and secondly it was just a bad decision in general to leave anything high risk to that guy.

He's the type of person to break under pressure rather than hold it.

Viv turned back to his journal.

According to Sid's information, the attack would happen on the 25th of March, and today was the day before.

Sadly the terrorist attack didn't fall on the day of the full moon, so the hopes of getting lucky quickly went down the drain. The full moon already passing by a long while ago.

It could have been so easy if it was on the day of a full moon...

Just thinking of how many easy things would be able to be done with his strange power was mouth watering.

Its origins are certainly shady though..

Viv coughed inwardly, remembering how he had gotten his power in the first place.

Why didn't he ask back then more of what happened...?

Suddenly, a wind blew through an open window of the library, turning his attention back to the journal, whose pages had been flipped.

Ah, back to the bombing.

Such a coincidence of the two events lining up and such things didn't happen to unlucky Viv, so he had already began to prepare beforehand for a worst case scenario type situation.

And it's all possible thanks to that guy...

When opening Sid's scroll for the first time, Viv almost spat the drink in his mouth out after seeing the gold mine of info.

Everything from the exact locations, how to defuse, and set times of when it would explode.

It was actually sort of frightening with how detailed it was, and luckily the defusal of the bombs were relatively simple.

Because the plan relied on commoners with low mana and knowledge about magic to actually plant the bombs, the bombs had to be specially made to be handled by them.

This included a manuel set up and manual emergency stop, in case the planter accidentally placed it in the wrong area or was in danger of being blasted themselves.

The main purpose of the bombing didn't seem to be harming as many students as possible, as it was more of an explosive fire starter than a bomb...if that even made sense.

It was the first warning signs of the public's animosity toward the nobility, a hint of what was to come.

Later on, tensions would only grow, with one of the main bad endings of the game being the public finally having a revolt against the Empire.

It was only then that some serious damage would be able to be seen.

But that's not now.

Quickly snapping himself out of his thoughts, Viv closed his journal and walked out of the library, clutching it underneath his arm.

The cool early spring breeze energized him, spreading fresh oxygen to his exhausted body.

Obviously he planned to stop the bomb at the library first, to make sure Celtine's record wasn't damaged, and then he would work his way toward the other buildings that he ranked in order of importance.

Just as he was about to contemplate some more, an annoyingly familiar red headed boy spotted him, smiling eagerly as he made his way over.

It seems he was apart of a group of students, holding fliers for some sort of school event. Vivillian had never been interested in attending school related things outside of class, so he didn't bother to learn.

His fellow classmate in the magic research and technology, Roman Lavare. A relatively high ranking noble with a good economic background, leaving him quite popular combined with his easy going and extroverted personality.

Recently he's been getting pestered by him, for some reason he found himself being Roman's subject of interest.

"Hey Vivillian, interested in astronomy?"

Roman's bright yellow eyes shone as he neared closer. His mouth curved into a smile, exposing protruding, pearly white canines.

Roman's eyes weren't as bright as William's much to Viv's relief, as Viv had always felt the need to wear sunglasses whenever making eye contact with William. Instead, it was more of a deeper, cat like hue, instead of reflective light.

Though, Viv did hear that Roman was distantly related to Royal Family because of some great grandmother of sorts.

"No."

"Want a flier for the upcoming-."

 "No."

 "How about just-."

 "No."

 "Are you-."

 "No."

Despite such harsh shut downs, it only seemed to intrigue Roman even more as he nonchalantly began to walk beside Viv on the path back to the dorms.

"Aren't you supposed to be handing out fliers?" Viv asked in disbelief at the determination.

Usually with the high ego, pampered nobles attending this school, they should have been offended and ran off already. However, Roman wasn't a typical noble, and all assumptions were useless against him.

I hate variables.

"I suddenly remembered I forgot something in my room."

Roman grinned slowly, his demeanor relaxed as his eyes curled into upturned crescents.

Admiring Roman's shamelessness with the worth of a penny, Viv continued to look forward and walk.

Passing students saw the interesting sight of the notorious top scorer attracting yet another big wig under his wing.

A few rumors had already flown around that Viv had begun to build connections with the Crown Prince, but it was all speculation for now.

Meanwhile, Roman didn't seem too bothered by the stares as he waved at each passing person he knew, playing it off expertly.

For such a noble school, a lot of gossip floated around, and Roman probably knew of the even stranger ones because of his social presence, yet still chose to bother Vivillian.

Whether it was because of his rumored connections with the Crown Prince, or just the immature interest of a young teen, Viv tried to not immerse himself much.

Suddenly, an unexpected face appeared in front of them, approaching the other way.

 "Oh, hey Viv."

Elva's expression perked up as he saw Vivillian, stopping his conversation with Ezekiel, who seemed to be walking with him as well.

Viv's expression changed subtly, his voice changing ever so slightly as he nodded.

 "Hello."

 "Viv? What a cute nickname-."

Roman tried to butt in.

 "Quiet."

Elva's eyes slowly drifted toward Viv's target of displeasure, recognizing him as a somewhat popular guy in their grade. A strange thought came to mind, wondering since when these two were close.

"Aha, Elva was it? I've heard so much about you, and it's a pleasure to finally meet in person."

Roman pulled out his signature grin, his social butterfly ability kicking in and already taking over as he extended his arm for a handshake.

"Roman Lavare right? I could say the same to you, but I hope you've haven't heard any strange things..."

Smiling albeit nervously, Elva shook his hand, as the two began to exchange pleasantries.

It left Viv and Ezekiel to stare at each other with less than friendly expressions. Rather, it was a little awkward with how obviously they seemed to dislike one another.

What's wrong with this brat?

Both of them thought, sizing each other up. At a glance you could tell they were the same sides of a coin, which was quite ironic.

Luckily for Viv, he didn't need to stay and wait to continue walking, and smugly past by Ezekiel, leaving the still conversing Elva and Roman behind.

By the time Roman had finished his short conversation with Elva, he found that Vivillian had already took the chance to leave him in the dust.

Holding in the urge to laugh, Roman smiled as he began to hand a paper over to Elva.

"The Astronomy club is hosting an event tomorrow at..."

—-

"I can't deal with you today."

Viv spoke directly toward the visage in the room for the first time in a while.

A little girl with red eyes and long black hair stood there with a passive expression on her face, looking somewhat bored.

For some reason after that incident where Viv had to desperately rush to the bathroom in the middle of the night, the little Princess grew more expressive in her facial expressions.

The nerves had got to him, leading Viv to be unable to sleep during the night, and now it was the morning of the attack.

Thankfully according to the paper, the bombs would be planted and set to detonate during sunset, when students got off class and were wandering around in town or on campus.

Since it was a one man operation, Viv tried to best to get ready for the day, but of course the little Princess had to show up and block his way outside.

The little Princess's expression grew dark, as she crossed her arms and looked away.

 "Be careful of glass today."

Leaving these words of warning, the little Princess finally took her leave.

 "..."

Viv always felt uneasy whenever the ghost talked, it was like breaking all rational stereotypical knowledge on Earth. She also just wasn't commonly a talker, the Princess seemed to just exist at times.

Today in Viv's bag was not only his school materials, but a familiar cloak and mask, along with his journal.

A small tinge of anxiousness grew over him as he made his way to class alone.

He could only hope everything goes well.
