Chapter 14 - Chapter 14

Nora began to walk around the room, pointing at various objects. "Look, Lyran, there's your bookshelf. And over there is the rocking chair where we can read stories later. Isn't that exciting?"

As she spoke, I noticed a glint of something metallic around her neck perhaps a locket or a small pendant. It piqued my curiosity, but I knew I couldn't show too much interest without seeming unusual for my age.

I decided to reach for Nora's necklace, my small hands grasping at the shiny object. It was a natural action for a curious baby, while also allowing me to investigate this intriguing item more closely.

Nora chuckled softly as I pawed at her necklace. "Oh, you like this, do you?" She gently took the pendant in her hand, moving it slightly away from my grasp but still within view. "This is a special locket given to me by my grandmother. It's very precious to me."

The locket was ovalshaped, made of what appeared to be silver, with delicate engravings on its surface. As Nora held it, it swung slightly, catching the light from the nursery window.

"Maybe when you're older, I'll show you what's inside," Nora said with a wink, tucking the locket back into her dress.

I babbled in response, feigning disappointment as any normal baby would, but my mind was racing. What could be inside the locket? Was it just a family keepsake, or could it hold some significance to my current situation?

Nora bounced me gently in her arms. "Now, now, young master. Let's find something else to entertain you, shall we?"

I decided to point at the bookshelf, making excited noises and waving my arm in that direction. This seemed like a good way to learn more about my environment and possibly gather some useful information from the stories.

Nora followed my gesture and smiled warmly. "Oh, would you like a story, Master Lyran? What a clever boy you are!" She carried me over to the bookshelf, her steps gentle and smooth.

As we approached, I could see rows of colorful books with various titles. Some appeared to be simple picture books, while others looked more advanced perhaps meant for when I grew older.

Nora reached out and selected a book with a vibrant blue cover. "How about 'The Dragon and the Knight'? That sounds exciting, doesn't it?"

She moved to the rocking chair nearby, settling us both comfortably. As she opened the book, I caught a glimpse of beautifully illustrated pages depicting a majestic dragon and a brave knight.

"Once upon a time, in a land not so different from ours..." Nora began, her voice taking on a storytelling cadence.

I pointed at a specific illustration in the book, one that showed the knight and dragon standing before a large, glowing crystal. My tiny finger tapped insistently on the page, accompanied by curious babbling sounds.

Nora's eyes lit up with understanding. "Oh, you're interested in the magic crystal, aren't you, Master Lyran? How observant of you!" She shifted me slightly in her lap to get a better view of the page.

"You see, in this story, the crystal is very special," Nora explained, her voice taking on an almost reverent tone. "It's said to be a source of great power, capable of enhancing the abilities of those who know how to use it properly."

She traced her finger along the illustration, pointing out details. "Notice how it glows? The story says that different crystals glow in different colors, and each color represents a different type of magic."

As Nora elaborated, I listened intently, storing away every bit of information. Could these crystals be more than just a fairytale element? The way Nora spoke about them seemed to suggest a deeper significance.

"Some people believe that such crystals really exist in our world," Nora added in a hushed voice, as if sharing a secret. "But that's just silly grownup talk. For now, let's enjoy the pretty pictures, shall we?"

I pointed at another illustration in the book, this time focusing on an image of the knight standing before what appeared to be a grand castle. My small finger tapped the page insistently, accompanied by curious babbling sounds.

Nora's eyes sparkled with delight at my continued interest. "My, my, Master Lyran, you certainly have a keen eye for detail. That's the royal castle of Astoria, where our valiant knight resided."

She adjusted her hold on me, allowing us both a clearer view of the page. "In our tale, the kingdom of Astoria is safeguarded by exceptional knights who serve the royal family. Each knight hails from a noble house, possessing unique abilities passed down through generations."

Nora's finger traced the intricate details of the castle illustration. "Notice those towering spires and formidable walls. Legend has it that the castle of Astoria was constructed using both magic and stone. Some believe it's intrinsically linked to the very essence of the land, growing more powerful as the kingdom flourishes."

As she spoke, I detected a subtle shift in her tone a blend of reverence and something else... perhaps a hint of nostalgia? It made me wonder if there was more depth to Nora's knowledge than mere storytelling.

"The knight in our story belongs to one of the most esteemed noble houses," Nora continued. "Do you see his shield? The emblem there represents their family crest, symbolizing their affinity for fire magic. Each noble house possesses its own distinctive magical prowess, you know."

I pointed at the knight's shield, babbling excitedly and tapping the page repeatedly. My enthusiasm was clear I wanted to know more about these fascinating crests and the noble houses they represented.

Nora's eyes lit up with joy at my apparent curiosity. "Oh, you're quite intrigued by the family crests, aren't you, Master Lyran? Well, let me tell you more about them."

She adjusted her hold on me, ensuring we both had a good view of the book. "You see, each noble house in Astoria has its own unique crest. The one on this knight's shield shows a flame, representing their mastery over fire magic. Other houses might have crests depicting water, earth, or even more abstract concepts like shadow or light."
