Wang Chong didn't care much about Kobe's attitude toward him.
He also wasn't concerned with having a good relationship with Kobe.
In fact, he never thought he could stay with the Lakers for very long.
As the saying goes, "There can't be two tigers on one mountain."
It's not just Kobe who wants to be the "Durant" of the team. Wang Chong will also follow the path of Durant in the future. After all, like Kobe, he is a pure scorer. At least, this is the case for Wang Chong, who is currently tied to Durant's growth template card.
It is impossible for a normal team to have two scoring champions at the same time. There will always be conflicts regarding ball possession and team tactics.
After the Heat formed the Big Three in 2010, Wade made concessions for James. Similarly, after Durant joined the Warriors in 2016, Curry took the initiative to reduce his ball possession. When the Warriors reached the final critical moments of the playoffs, the offense was handed over to Durant.
But Wang Chong was unwilling to give in to Kobe.
Why should he? Just because Kobe's overall ability rating is relatively high?
After traveling back in time and getting a system plug-in, would he be willing to just be a pawn for others?
Wang Chong thought that most players who liked to play 2K career mode would want to participate in almost every offensive round and rack up exaggerated stats. Who wouldn't want to be a big independent player with luxurious stats like James, Kobe, Harden, and Westbrook?
He was being very honest with himself. Since he had come to this era and became a professional NBA player, Wang Chong's goal was to become the best one and charge toward the title of "God of Basketball," like Michael Jordan. For this reason alone, he could not coexist with Kobe. He also didn't think that Kobe would compromise and be second for the sake of winning. Otherwise, there would have been no feud between the O'Neal-Kobe duo.
So, as the old saying goes, there is no room for two tigers on one mountain. With the system at his disposal, it might not take long for Wang Chong to surpass Kobe. Moreover, based on his static advantages in height and wingspan, it's uncertain who would come out stronger in the end.
Speak of the devil, and the devil appears.
Just as Wang Chong mentioned the system, it suddenly responded after being silent for a while.
With the end of the December schedule, a new system task was released!
"Ding—system task activated."
"Mission objective: Win the MVP of the All-Star Rookie Challenge."
When he saw this task, Wang Chong couldn't help but raise his eyebrows.
Rookie Challenge MVP? This system is really daring to issue such a task.
The current Rookie Challenge isn't like the future reform where it's the world players versus the U.S. players. It's still the format of rookies versus sophomores.
As a rookie in the 2003 class, Wang Chong naturally belongs to the first-year rookie team. Alongside him in this camp are LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, and his old teammate Dwyane Wade, among others.
This lineup seems very strong, but there is a huge gap in strength between the first-year rookies and the sophomores.
Furthermore, the 2002 rookie class isn't weak, especially on the inside. The combination of Yao Ming and Amare Stoudemire poses a challenge that the interior players of the 2003 class can't handle at all.
Additionally, the 2002 rookies include Carlos Boozer, Manu Ginobili, Caron Butler, and others.
After a season of training, these players' overall strength has long surpassed the average level of the first-year rookies.
From Wang Chong's memory, this rookie challenge turned into a massacre by the sophomores over the freshmen, with a score of around 140 to 120. The freshmen lost by more than 20 points.
Even though there's now another first-year rookie named Wang Chong, he too is an outside player. The issue of competing with Yao Ming and Stoudemire inside remains unchanged.
Moreover, if Wang Chong wants to win the Rookie Challenge MVP, his opponents aren't just the sophomores; his teammates are also competitors.
James and Anthony currently see Wang Chong as a thorn in their side, so how could they be willing to let him win the MVP of the Rookie Challenge? They will surely try to stop him in various ways.
"Ugh—!"
Shaking his head in frustration, Wang Chong sighed.
"This is going to be tough…"
But no matter how tough it is, Wang Chong had to bite the bullet and go for it. Who could resist the tempting rewards of a system task?
"Complete the task and earn 1,000 points and a random gold-level badge!"
When Wang Chong saw this exaggeratedly generous reward, his eyes widened.
A thousand points plus a gold badge!
Not to mention how valuable a gold-level badge is, the 1,000 points alone are enough to make Wang Chong envious.
He hasn't earned any points in a long time since the draft.
In the past few months, Wang Chong has not been lazy. He has been training very hard and seriously every day, which has led to a slight improvement in his abilities without the acceleration of points. However, the progress has been very slow.
Currently, Wang Chong's overall ability rating has increased from 83 before the start of the regular season to 84. This improvement is actually significant but does not help Wang Chong much on the court. The abilities that have improved are those that were relatively low to begin with and easier to upgrade.
The skills that Wang Chong truly relies on, such as mid-range shooting, are still at 94 and have remained unchanged.
Close-range shooting, three-point shooting, and free throws have all improved slightly, but this improvement isn't very noticeable on the court.
The extent to which one can improve abilities through personal effort is limited. Generally, a player might increase their overall ability rating by 1 to 2 points per season, reaching an overall ability rating above 90 in three to four years. Then, in five to ten years, they might peak with a rating above 95, entering the ranks of the league's top stars.
For normal top stars, this is a typical development trajectory.
But Wang Chong is different. He has a system that acts as a cheat. Since he has this cheat, it's understandable that he should grow faster.
If he completes the rookie challenge tasks and earns the 1,000 points, based on past experience, Wang Chong could use these points to accelerate his overall ability rating to above 88.
When a player's overall ability rating reaches 88, they are basically at an All-Star level. If the team performs better, there's a chance of being selected for the All-NBA team.
An overall rating of 88 is at least on par with sophomore players like James, Wade, and Anthony.
In James' second season, as the team's core, his average stats improved to 27+7+7. Although the Cavaliers failed to enter the playoffs, his impressive stats alone placed him among the best in the league. During this period, James' overall ability rating was at least 88 and might have even been close to 90.
In Wade's second season, his personal stats soared to 24 points, 5 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game. With the addition of O'Neal, the team's record shot up to first in the Eastern Conference, eventually losing to the Pistons in seven games in the Eastern Conference Finals.
In the playoffs, Wade averaged 27.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 6.6 assists per game, leading his team to the Eastern Conference Finals. This made him the strongest player from the 2003 class.
Of course, due to Wang Chong's presence, Wade, who was the first player from the 2003 class to reach the conference finals, may need to reconsider his team's fate.
