Chapter 3 - A TASTE OF FREEDOM

The bustling market of Jiaxing was a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and scents that never failed to thrill Li Mei. The air was thick with the aroma of sizzling meats, fresh vegetables, and exotic spices, mingling together in a heady perfume that made her mouth water. She walked through the narrow, crowded streets, her eyes darting from one colorful stall to the next. Yulan trailed behind her, clutching the basket of ginger and other essentials they had already purchased.

Li Mei loved the market for its chaos and vibrancy, a stark contrast to the orderly and quiet life at home. Here, she could lose herself in the crowd, becoming just another face among the sea of people. But there was another reason she loved the market, a secret indulgence that only Yulan knew about: Li Mei was a true foodie.

It wasn't enough for her to merely appreciate the beauty of a perfectly roasted duck or the rich aroma of a bubbling pot of stew. No, Li Mei wanted to taste everything, to savor every new flavor the market had to offer. It was her small rebellion against the rigid expectations of her life, a way to express herself in a world that often felt stifling.

Today, something caught her eye as they wandered deeper into the market. A small, unassuming stall tucked away at the edge of the square had a crowd of eager customers gathered around it. The stall owner, an elderly man with a wispy white beard and a jovial smile, was busy slicing thick cuts of meat from a large, roasted animal that hung on a spit. The meat was golden-brown, glistening with juices, and the aroma that wafted toward her was intoxicating.

Li Mei's curiosity was piqued. She had never seen this particular delicacy before, and her foodie instincts kicked into high gear. "What is that?" she whispered to Yulan, her eyes wide with excitement.

Yulan craned her neck to see over the heads of the crowd, her expression skeptical. "It looks like…some kind of roasted meat. But it's not something you should be eating, Miss Li Mei. It's not proper for a lady of your status."

Li Mei shot her maid a mischievous grin, her mind already working on a plan. "Oh, come on, Yulan. Who's going to recognize me if I put on a little disguise? It'll be fun! Besides, I can't resist trying something new."

Yulan's eyes widened in alarm as she realized what Li Mei was suggesting. "Miss Li Mei, you can't be serious! What if someone sees you? You could ruin your reputation! And changing your clothes to look like a commoner? That's out of the question!"

But Li Mei was already steps ahead of her, her mind racing with excitement. She had always been clever and resourceful, and the idea of slipping into a different identity, even just for a little while, was too tempting to resist. The thought of freedom, of being able to taste whatever she pleased without worrying about what others might think, was exhilarating.

She leaned in closer to Yulan, her voice low and conspiratorial. "Listen, Yulan, it'll only be for a short time. No one will even notice us in this crowd. I'll just change into something simple, and we can blend right in. We can say we're from out of town, visiting the market. Please, Yulan, don't you want to see what that meat tastes like?"

Yulan groaned, her resolve weakening in the face of Li Mei's enthusiasm. She knew her mistress well enough to understand that once she had set her mind to something, there was little point in arguing. "Fine, fine," she muttered, throwing her hands up in defeat. "But if we get caught, I'm telling Madam Zhao it was all your idea!"

Li Mei's smile widened, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Deal!" she said, grabbing Yulan's hand and pulling her into a nearby alleyway, away from the prying eyes of the market crowd.

Once they were safely out of sight, Li Mei quickly stripped off her elegant outer robe, revealing a simpler undergarment. She reached into Yulan's basket and pulled out a plain, rough-spun tunic that she had stashed there earlier in anticipation of just such an adventure. It was the kind of clothing a farmer's daughter or a common laborer might wear, nothing that would attract attention. She draped the tunic over her undergarments, cinching it at the waist with a piece of twine.

Yulan watched with a mixture of exasperation and amusement as Li Mei completed her transformation. "You're going to get us both in so much trouble," she muttered, but there was a hint of a smile on her lips.

Li Mei ignored her, instead focusing on the final touch: her veil. She carefully adjusted it so that it covered most of her face, leaving only her eyes visible. It was a bit of a gamble, as the veil was still of a finer quality than what most commoners could afford, but it was the only way to ensure her identity remained hidden.

When she was satisfied with her disguise, Li Mei turned to Yulan with a triumphant grin. "What do you think? Do I look like a commoner?"

Yulan sighed, shaking her head. "You look ridiculous, but I suppose it'll do. Just promise me you won't do anything too reckless."

"Of course not," Li Mei replied, though the mischievous glint in her eye suggested otherwise.

With their roles reversed—Yulan now the respectable maid and Li Mei the lowly commoner—they made their way back to the market square. As they approached the stall, the crowd had thinned slightly, giving Li Mei a clear view of the delicious-looking meat. Her mouth watered in anticipation as she thought about the taste of that perfectly roasted delicacy.

But just as she was about to step forward and place her order, she felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned to see Yulan giving her a stern look. "Remember, you're supposed to be a commoner. Act the part."

Li Mei stifled a giggle and nodded, adopting a more subdued posture. She couldn't help but feel a thrill of excitement as she prepared to indulge in her secret foodie adventure. This was going to be fun.
