Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Arrival on Nythera

Ethan stood on the bridge of the Ark , staring at the glowing blue orb in the distance , Nythera, the planet they were now tasked with saving. It was beautiful, even from this distance, shimmering with a natural brilliance. But Ethan knew better than to be lulled by the beauty. Beneath its picturesque surface, Nythera was in danger. The Vulzek , carnivorous plant creatures, were wreaking havoc on the planet's inhabitants.

"Nythera sure looks pretty," Ethan muttered, rubbing the back of his neck, "but I'm betting it's just as dangerous as it is beautiful."

Prella, who stood next to him in full combat gear, snorted. "Beautiful planets are usually the most dangerous. Remember that volcanic world? The one that almost cooked us alive?"

Nova's holographic form materialized beside them, flashing a mischievous grin. "Oh, Captain, if you'd let me run my simulations for you, I could give you all the beauty with none of the danger. Just you, me, and a peaceful, digital paradise."

Ethan rolled his eyes. "Nova, if you're about to offer me a virtual beach vacation while we're on a rescue mission, I'm going to lose it."

Nova pouted playfully. "But you look so tense, Captain. You could use a distraction…"

"I'm distracted enough as it is," Ethan shot back, trying to ignore the growing tension between Prella and Nova. Every time Nova flirted with him, Prella's jaw would clench a little tighter.

The Ark descended toward Nythera's surface, passing over massive canyons, endless forests, and waterfalls that glistened with bioluminescence. But as they got closer, signs of destruction became more evident , trees blackened and twisted, entire forests swallowed by a creeping, unnatural darkness.

"It's worse than I thought," Ethan said, his brow furrowing. "Let's hope we're not too late."

Prella gripped her blaster. "We'll deal with whatever's down there. We always do."

The ship touched down in a clearing just outside one of the last untouched forests. As the ramp lowered, Ethan caught sight of a figure waiting for them. She stood tall and graceful, her cobalt blue fur shimmering in the daylight. Antlers curved elegantly from her head, and a long, delicate tail swayed behind her.

Vala.

The woman was even more stunning in person than her hologram had shown. Her fur, rich in color, seemed to catch the light and glow faintly, and her eyes , large and amber , radiated a calm, serene presence, despite the danger that surrounded her world.

Prella grunted under her breath. "Great. Another one."

Ethan raised an eyebrow. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"You know exactly what it means, Captain," Prella muttered, giving him a sidelong glance. "First Nova, now her. You're collecting admirers faster than we can deal with the alien threats."

Before Ethan could respond, Vala stepped forward, her gaze locking onto his. She moved with a fluid grace that made her seem almost otherworldly, which, of course, she was.

"Captain Ethan," Vala said, her voice soft but filled with strength. "I am grateful you've come. My people… my world… we have no one else to turn to."

Ethan nodded, trying to stay professional despite the undeniable beauty of the woman standing before him. "We're here to help, Vala. Tell us what we need to know about these Vulzek."

Vala glanced toward the horizon, where dark clouds gathered ominously over the distant forests. "The Vulzek are unlike anything we've faced. They are not mindless creatures , they are intelligent, organized, and driven by a hunger that never ends. They capture my people, trap them in acidic sacs, and slowly digest them. It is… a cruel death."

Prella frowned. "We've faced our fair share of monsters, but these sound different."

"They are," Vala confirmed. "The Vulzek Queen controls the hive, and until she is destroyed, my world will never be free."

Ethan crossed his arms, thinking. "So we find this Queen and take her out. Sounds simple enough."

"Simple, yes," Vala said, her eyes darkening, "but not easy. The Queen resides deep within the heart of the forest. Her hive is heavily guarded by drones, and the forest itself is a living trap. It senses us… it moves against us."

Prella scoffed. "A moving forest? Great. Just what we needed."

Ethan sighed. "Alright, we've got our mission. Let's gear up."

As the crew began to prepare for the journey into the forest, Ethan couldn't help but notice the tension between Prella and Vala. Prella was clearly bothered by Vala's presence, though she tried to hide it behind a mask of professionalism. Nova, ever the instigator, floated nearby, her smirk widening as she watched the growing rivalry.

"Oh, Prella," Nova said sweetly, "you shouldn't be so worried. There's plenty of the Captain to go around."

Prella shot her a glare. "Can't you go offline for once in your life?"

Nova flickered playfully. "And miss all the fun? Never."

Ethan groaned. "Can we not do this now? We've got plant monsters to kill."

The trek into the forest was unnervingly quiet. The air was thick with tension, and every step felt like walking into an ambush. The forest around them was alive , vines coiled and uncoiled, trees seemed to lean toward them, and the air was filled with a faint, unsettling hum. It was as if the planet itself was watching them.

"Stay alert," Ethan whispered, keeping his blaster ready. "These Vulzek could be anywhere."

Prella moved ahead, scouting the path while Vala followed close behind Ethan. Nova, who was now confined to her mobile drone form for the mission, floated beside them, her holographic face projecting an amused expression as she scanned the area.

"I've got movement ahead," Prella called back, her voice low. "Could be Vulzek drones."

Vala's eyes narrowed. "They're watching us. The Queen knows we're coming."

As if on cue, the ground beneath them shifted. Ethan barely had time to react before vines shot up from the earth, wrapping around his legs and pulling him down. The rest of the crew was caught in the same trap , vines, thick and thorny, wrapped around their bodies, pulling them toward the waiting darkness of the forest floor.

"Dammit!" Ethan growled, struggling against the vines. "Prella! Vala!"

Prella had already slashed through her restraints with her energy blade, freeing herself with practiced ease. "I'm fine! Hold on!"

Ethan twisted, aiming his blaster at the vines wrapped around his legs and firing off several shots. The vines recoiled, hissing as they released their grip on him.

Vala, using her natural agility, had already freed herself, her movements graceful and fluid. "The forest is alive. It senses our presence."

Ethan shot her a wry look. "Yeah, I'm starting to get that."

Before they could regroup, the sound of rustling leaves filled the air. Ethan's heart raced as he realized what was coming next.

"Drones," Prella muttered, gripping her weapon tightly.

From the shadows of the trees, the Vulzek drones emerged. They were grotesque creatures , part plant, part insect, with twisting vines for limbs and glowing red eyes that burned with hunger. Their movements were jerky but fast, and they made no sound as they advanced.

"Here we go," Ethan muttered, raising his blaster.

The first Vulzek drone lunged at them, its vine-like arms whipping toward Ethan with terrifying speed. He fired a series of shots, but the creature dodged with unnatural agility, its glowing eyes locking onto him with predatory focus.

Prella charged forward, slashing at the drone with her energy blade, cutting through its twisted body. The drone let out a shriek, its body convulsing before collapsing to the ground, motionless.

"Nice work," Ethan called out, but his words were cut short as two more drones emerged from the trees, their glowing eyes fixed on the group.

"Ethan, behind you!" Vala shouted, leaping forward with surprising speed.

Before Ethan could react, Vala tackled him to the ground, just as a vine shot past where his head had been. He looked up at her, startled.

"You keep saving me," he said breathlessly.

Vala smiled down at him, her amber eyes gleaming. "And I'll keep doing it."

Prella, seeing the exchange, rolled her eyes. "Can we not have a moment right now?"

Ethan scrambled to his feet, firing off another round of shots at the remaining drones. "No moments. Let's finish this!"

The crew fought off the drones, moving deeper into the forest as the danger escalated. Ethan could feel the weight of the mission pressing down on him , the Vulzek were relentless, and the forest itself seemed to be conspiring against them. But with Vala's guidance and Prella's combat skills, they were able to push forward, inching closer to the Vulzek hive.

"I hope this Queen is as easy to kill as her drones," Prella muttered, wiping sweat from her brow.

"She won't be," Vala

said quietly, her voice tinged with fear. "But we have no choice. My people… they're counting on us."

Ethan placed a hand on her shoulder, offering her a reassuring smile. "We'll stop her. We won't let your people down."

Vala looked up at him, her gaze softening. "I believe you, Ethan. I trust you."

Prella, seeing the exchange, scowled. "Great. Just great."

Nova, floating nearby, chuckled softly. "Oh, Prella, you're going to have to learn to share."
