Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 - The beginning

When Banri Tatsuya opened his eyes, he felt the heaviness in his chest again. The days kept repeating just the same for someone like him who had a disability.

Banri could no longer walk because of his illness, known as "Multifocal acquired motor axonopathy," where his immune system attacks the nervous system of his body. This leads to an inability to move certain parts of the body, and in Banri's case, the disease affected his lower body—from his waist down to his feet—making him unable to walk.

He was ten years old when he was struck by this rare illness. Since then, he hasn't been able to walk. Ten years have passed, and now he's twenty. He has been paralyzed for a decade and has been going back and forth to the hospital for follow-up check-ups.

According to the doctor, if his illness isn't managed, it could cause complications in other parts of his body.

Banri used to be active in sports. When he was in elementary school, he was part of the track and field team. He was a fast runner, winning many trophies and medals.

He was supposed to compete at the regional level when suddenly, one day, he woke up unable to feel his legs. He screamed in fear and shock because he couldn't move them.

He was brought to the hospital and was examined by doctors for several days until he was diagnosed. His world and dreams shattered when the doctor told them that he would never be able to walk again. All he could do then was cry while being held by his parents.

Since that day, Banri has been unable to walk. His parents chose to continue sending him to school, accompanied by a bodyguard hired to push his wheelchair. But nothing was easy for Banri because he became the target of ridicule.

He was removed from the track and field team. Many people pitied him, but there were also those who bullied him. Until one day, he could no longer bear going to school. He couldn't handle the bullying and his despair, especially while the track and field team continued training, and he was left stuck in his wheelchair.

His self-esteem and confidence plummeted. So, he decided to switch to homeschooling, something his parents eventually allowed, knowing the struggles their son was going through in coping with his situation.

Since then, his world revolved around the four corners of his room. The only person he interacted with was his tutor, who came to their home. He only went out for hospital check-ups.

His world lost its color. His parents were saddened by Banri's situation because he was their only child, and they had hoped for a bright future for him, but his rare illness took that away.

Banri's parents were wealthy, owning many lands, properties, and various businesses. However, despite their wealth, they couldn't cure their son's illness.

Banri completed high school through homeschooling, and he didn't go to college, thinking there was no point for someone like him.

For Banri, a person with a disability had no place or purpose in society. So, after finishing high school, he spent his time drawing and playing online games.

Video games, online games, and various MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games) were Banri's only sources of joy.

For a moment, he could forget reality when he was in the game. He felt like his character in the game, freely walking, traveling, and doing whatever he wanted.

In online RPG games, Banri met many other players. Their characters would meet in the game and join him on adventures, doing quests, and exploring the game world.

But as soon as he logged out of the game, he returned to reality—just a paralyzed person confined to the four corners of his room. He only felt alive again when playing online games, which seemed to be his only source of hope.

His parents were supportive of him. They bought him every new game that came out, accompanied him to events when new games were launched, and even took him to cosplay events featuring characters from his favorite games.

Until one day, Banri got bored of the countless video games and online RPGs he played. It all felt repetitive, and he started losing interest.

One day, he was lying on his bed, staring at the ceiling, thinking of something new to occupy his time instead of online games.

Then his father walked into his room.

"Banri, I have great news for you," his father said with a smile.

"What is it, Dad?" Banri asked curiously, as his father helped him sit up from lying down.

"There's a new game coming out, and it's government-supported. This game is not just any ordinary game. All the best game developers created this game. Would you like us to buy it? It's set to be released next week."

"But Dad, you know... I'm kind of bored with those games. They're just the same over and over. I don't think I'll buy one for now."

"Son, I'm telling you, this game is different. It's not just any game... Because you will literally be transported into the game's world, and once you're there, you can walk and won't have any disability."

Banri's eyes widened at what his father said.

"Really, Dad?" Banri asked in disbelief.

"Yes, son, that's how incredible this game is. You should watch the trailer on the game developer's website. They really made this game for people like you, people with disabilities. So you can have a new world and experience being normal. But people without disabilities can also play. But the goal is to make people with disabilities happy and participate in the game."

Banri's eyes sparkled at what his father said. He remembered an anime he watched called "Sword Art Online," where the main character ends up in the game. He felt excitement and a renewed sense of life.

"Son, this is it... Your life will change. You can do anything you want. I will buy that game for you, no matter how much it costs, just so you'll be happy," Banri's father said seriously.

In his excitement, Banri hugged his father.

"Dad, thank you, thank you so much..." Banri whispered to his father.

So Banri and his father eagerly awaited the game's release the following week. Both of them were excited, and his mother was also supportive.

A day before the game's release, the game developer announced the price on their website.

And they were all shocked by the price: One Billion.

"Wow, that's ridiculously expensive! That's absurd!" Banri's mother exclaimed in disbelief.

Banri suddenly felt sad, thinking his life was about to change, but one billion was too much to spend on a game. He knew his parents could afford it, but... they might have to sell some properties, land, and businesses to raise one billion just to buy the game.

And he didn't want his parents to spend that much just for his luxury.
