Chapter 13 - The Protestants attack the palace and offend the queen

"Hasn't that young and beautiful woman brought enough disasters to our country? When she was born, King James V died of a serious illness. When she was still a baby, England invaded our country for her, robbed our property, and killed our men. When she was five years old, England and France fought again on our land, turning the city into ruins. Just last year, because that woman tried to wear the crown of England on her head, she brought us another unprovoked war! Oh, every time, didn't we bleed like a river? Every time, we were covered with scars?

Think about it, who has ever had a good ending for anyone who has been involved with her? Her father died, her mother died, her father-in-law and husband died, and as long as you get close to Queen Mary Stuart , it is the beginning of an unfortunate fate!

The fallen church from Rome has firmly tied up the tickets to heaven with lies, allowing the rich and arrogant nobles to go to heaven happily, while we poor people can only go to hell after death. Is this fair? Now we have finally learned the true meaning of God and can convey it to the Lord through pure faith, but all this is about to be destroyed!

The seemingly beautiful witch is now starting to do evil ceremony again, and we must not sit idly by, we must destroy it all!

Yes, they must destroy it all, otherwise they will never have a chance to go to heaven again!

With John Knox's highly exaggerated words, the pent-up anger of the Protestants completely boils over, overwhelming the fear of offending the monarch and attacking the palace. These devout Protestants, one by one, curse the heretical beliefs from Rome, gather together, and rush towards the Palace of Holyrood house outside Edinburgh!

Holyrood Palace is a small but well-equipped palace, with chapels, galleries, ballrooms, royal libraries and suites for nobles. There is even a small zoo built because of the hobbies of the last king, James IV, where lions and civets were kept.

To the south of the palace is the private chapel exclusively for the Scottish royal family.

The queen, who is still mourning for her husband, is still wearing only a black dress, without any jewelry decorations. She sits on the first row of benches in the church, listening to the priest's sermon with a calm expression, and looks very focused.

Soon, all this peace is broken.

Hundreds of civilians leave Edinburgh and rush into the chapel in anger. Under Mary Stuart's deliberate indulgence, the few guards at the door do not stop them and let these Protestants rush into the chapel!

"Oh my God, throw away all these damned holy vessels!"

"Drive that idolatrous priest out of Scotland... No, let that priest get the punishment he deserves, throw him on the pyre and burn him to death!"

"This is not a real mass... It's a black mass from Satan the devil!"

People shout loudly, one after another, and rush to the pulpit recklessly, throwing all the messy things on the ground, making a crisp crackling sound, and breaking all the precious beeswax candles in two, throwing them on the ground and crushing them hard!

In the chapel, there were originally statues of Christ's crucifixion and the Virgin Mary holding the Son of God, which were carefully polished by sculptors from Italy. Whether it was wood or marble, they all shone with a warm luster, and were covered with clothes made of fine silk and gems, making the compassionate expressions of Christ and the Virgin Mary vivid. Who would have thought that this would become another evidence of guilt in the eyes of Protestants.

Reverend Knox told them to live a pious and simple life, wear sackcloth and fast, and not have any worldly luxury and enjoyment, so that they can go to heaven after death. However, these heretical sculptures are so extravagant. Isn't this the sin of greed among the seven deadly sins?

With a bang, the two statues are pushed to the ground by the rioting Protestants! The cross breaks, the holy body of Christ is split in two, and the white head and body of the Virgin Mary are also torn into pieces, and the glory is gone.

The band playing hymns in the corner has stopped long ago, and hid by the wall with the Catholic priest who was preaching, not daring to step forward to stop it, and the four Maids are trembling with fear, surrounded and protected by several guards, surrounding the queen, at a loss.

Mary Stuart had already wisely moved away from the center of the chapel when the footsteps sounded, and did not face the Protestants head-on.

Seeing that the chapel have been smashed into ruins by the Protestants, and ensuring that these people are unforgivable and could not be excused by any excuse, she immediately gestures to the Earl of Bothwell who was standing by.

-﹣Let the guards come in and arrest these Protestants!

Earl of Bothwell's eyes lit up and he immediately takes the order and leaves.

Because they have been prepared in advance, the guards come in quickly. Because all the Protestants have rushed inside the chapel, they could catch them one by one by guarding the gate. They almost do not cause any casualties, and tie the hands of these Protestants, and drive them one by one to the lawn outside the Holyrood Palace, and ask them to kneel down one by one.

These most fanatical Protestants were like brave lions when they were angry and wantonly smashed the chapel, and now, they are like weak lambs when the soldiers come with weapons.

Kneeling on the lawn that had just sprouted green buds, the cool breeze of early spring is like a basin of cold water, pouring on their heads that were heated by anger and faith, bringing back the rationality of these Protestants, making them realize belatedly how stupid they have done, and begin to tremble in fear.

Oh, God, they actually attacked the palace and offended the queen, which is a crime that will cost them their heads!

Why are they so reckless today? !

"Your Majesty, a total of 103 mobs who offended your majesty are all kneeling outside the palace waiting for your punishment." Earl Bothwell walk into the church and says.

"Well done, Earl Bothwell." Mary Stuart says.

Surrounded by maids and guards, Mary Stuart walks out of the church and comes to the Protestants.

"Tell me, what made you do such a bold thing, and dare to offend the majesty of the queen!" Mary Stuart says loudly.

"Your Majesty, please forgive us..."

"There must be a devil speaking in my ear, which made me make a mistake accidentally."

"Reverend Knox said that a Catholic mass was being held, and we were too angry and lost our minds."

The crowd speak in a flurry of words.

Mary Stuart listens silently, and after hearing the name of John Knox, she decisively walks to the civilian who has mentioned that name.

"So, it is Reverend John Knox who told you that the Catholic sacrament is held here?" Mary Stuart interrupts him and asks decisively.

"Yes, yes, Reverend Knox said that was held here." The man answers in panic, not daring to say that Reverend Knox also said that Queen Mary was a witch, and the disasters brought by her were countless.

"So, was it Reverend Knox who came to instruct you to attack the palace and smash the chapel?" Mary Stuart asks again.

"..."

The man purses his lips tightly, his face is pale and sweaty, and he keeps silent.

"If not, then you are no longer accomplices, but masterminds. You have taken the initiative to offend me, your queen and master! Accomplices can be forgiven, but masterminds cannot certainly. This is a crime that requires hanging. Now tell me, did you come here on your own, or did Knox instruct you to come here?" Mary Stuart raises her voice again and asks majestically.

Hearing the word "hanging", the man's knees softens and he almost falls to the ground.

"... Of course, it was Reverend Knox who asked us to come here, Your Majesty, this was definitely not my intention." After a long while, the man whispers.

The lawn is very quiet, with only the chirping and breathing of some insects. Most of the kneeling Protestants glare at the man, as if condemning him for betraying his faith and Reverend Knox, while others begin to wander and hesitate, opening their mouths to speak.

Slowly, sporadic voices are heard, saying that it was Knox who ordered them to attack the palace, and they were just temporarily brainwashed by anger, and ask the queen to forgive these stupid civilians.

Mary Stuart steps back a few steps, raises her eyebrows slightly, and says in a voice that everyone could hear,

"Reverend John Knox, although I have never met him, I have heard of his reputation. Everyone says that he is an extremely pious, simple, and wise monk with such virtues. Even if he is a Protestant, I respect him very much in my heart. However, I didn't expect that he would instigate innocent civilians to attack my palace today, which really surprises me."
