Chapter 67 - Laura is a scam

Jackson

The lounge felt colder than usual as I sat across from Moira, finalizing the details of our plan. I couldn't even believe I was working with her, after she reached out to me and asked that we meet, I did my research on her and what I found out about her was so pleasing.

Meeting with her was just to clear my curiosity, I had no intention of having anything with her but after that explosive sex, I agreed. Until I get Laura back, it wouldn't be bad if I use her to relive my stress. After all she isn't worth anything more…

The whole thing was beginning to shape into something big, a precise operation with no room for errors, just the way I liked it. I glanced at Moira, her expression sharp and unyielding, a perfect match for the ruthless game we were about to play.

"So," I began, leaning back in my chair, "we're set for the event. You know she's going to run, right? After seeing those pictures, she'll have no choice but to flee, humiliated, lost. And that's when I'll be there, waiting outside. She'll have nowhere else to turn."

Moira smirked, a glint of satisfaction flickering in her eyes. "Perfect. I'll make sure Jake is thoroughly distracted, so there's no way he'll be there to save her." She leaned forward, her voice dripping with malice. "I've got a contact on the inside, someone at the office who's all too willing to help with this. I'll pay him a nice chunk, and he'll handle the fund transfer directly into her account. By the time we're done, it'll look like she embezzled a fortune and ran."

The thought was exhilarating. I'd been waiting for a chance to see Laura crumble, to watch her lose everything she thought she'd gained. The way she had discarded me, the way she'd climbed her way up with Jake, all of it had left a bitter taste in my mouth. But now, here was my chance to take back control, to show her what it felt like to be played.

"Just make sure she doesn't have any other way out," I said, adjusting my watch. "I'll be stationed backstage, ready to pull the trigger on the pictures. Once they're on the screen, I'll move the car around front. Timing is key. She'll be devastated, she'll run, and she'll fall right into my lap."

Moira's smile widened, her satisfaction evident. "I wouldn't have it any other way. After all, this is our one shot to take her down, and I won't let her slip away."

We went over the sequence one last time, every detail in place. The image files were prepped and corrupted just enough to ensure that once uploaded, they'd bypass the system filters and display as intended. As for the funds transfer, Moira had been meticulous with her planning. She was cunning, and in her own way, a powerful ally.

On the night of the event, I waited in the back room, my heart firm with anticipation. I could hear the faint hum of voices from the ballroom, the energy in the air practically palpable. Laura had no idea what was coming.

Moira's signal was a subtle gesture, a quick glance toward the stage where Jake stood, oblivious, holding his speech notes. He was ready to give his apology, to win back the crowd. It would be his last attempt at redemption, before everything crumbled around him.

With a final check on my laptop, I keyed in the command, sending the corrupt files into the system. It took mere seconds for them to overwrite the presentation on the big screen. Jake had just started talking about Laura when the images flashed up, shocking gasps erupting from the audience.

I didn't wait to see the full effect. Slipping out the side exit, I rushed to the car and pulled it up to the front entrance, just in time to see Laura, her face pale and devastated, stumbling through the doors. She looked around, dazed, and then she spotted me. Desperation overtook her hesitation, and she practically threw herself into the passenger seat.

The second the door closed, I floored the gas, speeding us away from the scene. She had no idea what she was in for.

As Jackson sped off with Laura, I turned my focus back to the next phase of the plan. Pulling out my phone, I dialed my contact at Jake's office. The man was already on standby, waiting for my call, as instructed. He'd proven loyal enough, especially with the generous payment I'd promised him.

"Everything's in place?" he asked, a hint of nervousness in his voice.

"Exactly," I replied, keeping my tone steady, unwavering. "I need the funds transferred to the designated account. Make it look seamless, no mistakes."

I could practically hear him gulp on the other end. "And…you're sure this is going to work?"

"Oh, it'll work," I assured him. "Just get it done."

There was a pause before he finally agreed. "I'll start the transfer now. You'll have the proof within minutes."

I hung up, a sense of satisfaction washing over me. The transfer would be complete by the time Jake even got word of it. Once he realized what had happened, he'd have no choice but to believe Laura had betrayed him. After all, the evidence would be undeniable. The trust he'd built in her would shatter, leaving him vulnerable. And I'd be there, ready to pick up the pieces.

A message pinged on my phone a moment later. It was the proof of the transfer. I allowed myself a small smile. Everything was falling into place, just as I'd planned. This betrayal would be enough to tear them apart for good.

I took a deep breath, savoring the victory that was almost within my grasp. It wasn't enough just to ruin Laura. I wanted Jake to see me as the one who'd saved him from her deceit. He needed to know I'd been there all along, that I was the one he could truly rely on. Laura was nothing more than a pretty face who'd waltzed into his life and wrapped him around her finger. But he'd see her true colors soon enough.

I shot a quick message to Kurt, who was waiting nearby with our getaway car. "It's done. Let's go."

We met up at the agreed location, an abandoned building on the outskirts of the city. Kurt looked uneasy, his eyes shifting as he waited, but I dismissed it. His nerves were his problem, not mine. I wasn't about to let anything jeopardize our plans.

Moments later, the car pulled up, and Jackson emerged, hauling Laura's unconscious body out. She was limp in his arms, her head lolling to the side. I watched him carefully as he carried her inside, wondering if he was feeling even the slightest bit of remorse. But his expression was blank, calculating. This was business, nothing more.

"She's still breathing, right?" I asked, more out of habit than concern.

Jackson gave a curt nod. "Barely."

"Are you sure? She looks so dead." I argued while he snapped at me.

"You don't think I would kill my wife, do you? Not even you could make me do that! B*tch…" he yelled while I rolled my eyes.

I was willing to take his insults, it was just a matter of time before I get what's mine and I wouldn't have to see him again.

"She's still alive." Kurt chimed in while he felt Laura's pulse.

"Good," I said, allowing myself a satisfied smile. I glanced at the chair in the middle of the room, motioning for him to secure her there. We weren't finished yet though, not by a long shot.

I watched as the two tied her up while I waited for the next line of action. For Jake to figure out what a scam he had fell in love with…
