Chapter 17 - Forest (3)

Gray's heart pounded in his chest as the creature emerged from the shadows, a blur of motion that seemed to defy the very laws of nature. The beast was massive—its size dwarfing any animal Gray had encountered. Its limbs were unnaturally long, ending in claws that gleamed like polished steel under the sparse light. Its eyes glowed with a malevolent, crimson light, and its mouth, filled with razor-sharp teeth, twisted into a snarl that sent a fresh wave of fear through him. The growl it emitted was low and guttural, vibrating through the very air with a bone-chilling rumble.

Growl... Rumble...

Gray stood his ground, every muscle coiled like a spring ready to release. The sword in his hand felt almost insignificant in the face of this monstrosity, but he had no intention of backing down. The cold, predatory eyes of the creature bore into him, its intent clear—it was hungry, and Gray was its prey.

The forest around them seemed to fall away, the oppressive silence intensifying as the creature and Gray faced off. Shadows thickened, the faint light of the early morning barely illuminating the clearing where they stood. The wind had stilled, as if even nature itself was holding its breath.

Silence...

Gray's mind raced, calculating his next move. The creature was fast—much faster than anything he had faced before—but it wasn't invincible. His experience from countless battles in his past life flooded his mind, reminding him of tactics and strategies that might give him an edge. He couldn't afford to make a mistake; one wrong move, and it would all be over.

The creature lunged, its speed blurring the line between shadow and reality. Gray barely had time to react, his instincts screaming at him as he dodged to the side. The creature's claws slashed through the air with a menacing whoosh, and the ground where its claws struck was torn apart with a violent crash, sending dirt and debris flying. Gray spun, using the momentum to bring his sword down in a sweeping arc aimed at the creature's exposed flank.

But the creature was faster. It twisted with an unnatural agility, its body contorting as it dodged the blade. Then it was on him again, claws slashing through the air with a hiss. Gray brought his sword up just in time to block the attack, the force of the impact jarring him to the bone with a clang. The creature's strength was immense, and Gray's arms shook under the pressure.

Clang... Clang...

'Damn, it's strong,'

he thought, gritting his teeth as he pushed back against the creature. His mind raced, searching for an opening, a weakness he could exploit. The creature's red eyes blazed with fury, its breath hot and rancid as it bore down on him, emitting a low, rumbling growl.

With a sudden burst of strength, Gray shoved the creature back, creating a small gap between them. He leaped back, putting some distance between them, and took a quick breath to steady himself. The creature snarled, its eyes narrowing as it prepared to lunge again.

Snarl...

I can't keep this up, Gray realized. I need to find a way to end this quickly.

His eyes darted around the clearing, searching for anything he could use to his advantage. The trees were too thick to climb, and there was no cover he could use to hide or regroup. The mountain at his back was his only option—it provided a natural barrier, limiting the directions from which the creature could attack. But it also left him with no escape route. It was a gamble, but it was the only one he had.

Gray edged closer to the mountain, his back against the cool stone as he watched the creature closely. It moved with a predatory grace, circling him, looking for an opening.

The air around them seemed to grow heavier, the tension palpable. The creature snarled, its claws scraping against the ground with a scrape as it prepared to strike.

Scrape...

'Come on...' Gray thought, his grip on his sword tightening. Just a little closer...

The creature lunged again, and this time Gray was ready. He sidestepped at the last second, letting the creature's momentum carry it past him. As it passed, Gray swung his sword with all his strength, aiming for the creature's exposed side. The blade connected with a sickening crunch, slicing through flesh and bone.

The creature let out a howl of pain, its blood spraying across the ground with a sickening splat as it staggered to the side. Gray didn't waste a second—he pressed the attack, slashing at the creature with a relentless fury. Each strike was precise, aimed at weakening the beast, cutting tendons, and drawing blood. But even injured, the creature was formidable. It twisted and snapped at him; its claws still dangerous despite its wounds.

Splat...

Gray's breath came in ragged gasps, his muscles burning from the exertion. He could feel the fatigue setting in, but he pushed it aside, focusing only on the task at hand. He had to end this—there was no other option. The creature was slowing, its movements becoming more erratic as it bled out, but it wasn't finished yet. It snarled, baring its teeth in a final, desperate attack.

Snarl...
