Chereads / Feathers and Fangs: An Alpha's Transformation / Chapter 15 - Betrayal in the Ranks

Chapter 15 - Betrayal in the Ranks

The moon hung low in the sky, casting an eerie glow over the clearing where the pack gathered. Shadows danced around us, swirling as the wind whispered secrets of a long-forgotten past. I could feel the weight of uncertainty pressing down on my shoulders, as if the very earth beneath me was aware of the impending storm.

"Skye, we need to talk," Liam said, his voice low but urgent. He stepped forward, his eyes flickering with a mix of concern and determination. My heart raced, not just at the sight of him but at the tension simmering in the air.

"Not now, Liam. We have a pack meeting," I replied, trying to maintain my composure. But the truth was, I couldn't shake the feeling that something dark was lurking just out of sight.

As the pack members gathered, I felt their eyes on me, gauging my strength as their Alpha. The recent turmoil had shaken our unity—Liam's return, the theft of the moonstone, and the curse slowly turning our members human. It felt like the ground was shifting beneath my feet, and I was losing my grip.

"All right, everyone," I called, trying to project confidence. "We need to discuss our next steps. The hunters are still out there, and we can't afford to be divided."

Whispers rippled through the crowd, and I caught snippets of conversations. "What if the curse is affecting her?" "Did you see how weak Jake looked?" "Liam shouldn't be here."

I clenched my jaw, frustration boiling within me. I needed to regain their trust, to make them see that I was still the strong leader they needed. "We stand together, or we fall apart. We must find a way to restore the moonstone and break this curse!"

Suddenly, a sharp voice cut through the murmurs. "You mean *you* need to find a way, Skye. You've been leading us into chaos since you rejected your mate." It was Tara, one of the older pack members, her tone dripping with disdain. The air thickened with tension as her words hung between us.

"Enough!" I snapped, feeling my wolf stir beneath the surface. "This isn't the time for blame. We have a common enemy, and we need to focus on that."

But the seeds of doubt had already been sown. I could see it in their eyes—fear, mistrust, and the ever-looming question of whether I was still fit to lead.

Liam stepped closer, his presence a grounding force. "Skye's right. We've faced worse challenges before. We can't let this divide us." He shot a glance at Tara, who crossed her arms defiantly.

"Easy for you to say, Liam. You've been absent. What do you know about our struggles?"

The air crackled with tension, and I could feel the heat rising in my cheeks. "You know nothing about what he's faced!" I snapped. "Liam sacrificed everything to protect this pack!"

"Or to protect himself," Tara shot back, her voice cold as ice.

Before I could respond, a rustle in the underbrush caught my attention. A figure emerged from the shadows, cloaked in a dark hood. The sudden appearance sent a ripple of unease through the pack.

"Who dares to intrude?" I demanded, instinctively putting myself between the mysterious figure and my pack.

The figure lowered the hood, revealing a familiar face. It was Jake, my beta, but his expression was not one of relief. In fact, he looked pale, as if he had seen a ghost.

"Skye, you need to listen to me," he said, his voice shaky. "I've just returned from a patrol. There's something you need to know."

"What is it?" I urged, my heart racing.

"There's a traitor among us," he whispered, glancing around nervously. "I overheard them speaking about the moonstone—the plan to steal it and use it against you."

A cold shiver ran down my spine. "Who? Who is it?"

"I don't know. I couldn't get close enough to hear everything. But they're planning something big, and if we don't act fast, it could mean the end for all of us."

The pack shifted uneasily, eyes darting around as paranoia began to seep into our ranks.

"Jake, are you sure?" Liam asked, his voice steady but laced with concern.

"I swear it. They're plotting something tonight. We have to find out who it is before it's too late."

Panic bubbled within me. My instincts screamed that we were being watched, that the walls were closing in. "We need to split up and search the perimeter. We can't let anyone slip away."

As I turned to address the pack, I noticed several members exchanging furtive glances. A sense of betrayal stung my heart. Was it possible that one of my own had turned against us?

"Jake, gather a few trusted members," I instructed, trying to keep my voice steady. "We'll start searching the east side of the territory. The rest of you, stay alert and report anything suspicious."

The pack began to disperse, the air thick with tension. I caught Liam's eye, and he nodded, stepping closer. "I'll go with you. We can't let fear dictate our actions."

We moved through the shadows, the forest alive with the sounds of night—a rustle of leaves, the distant cry of an owl. My heart raced, not just from fear but from the anticipation of the hunt. I had always thrived on the thrill of a challenge, but this felt different. It felt personal.

As we reached the edge of our territory, I could feel the weight of the moonstone's absence pressing down on me. It was more than just a powerful artifact; it was a symbol of our unity and strength. Without it, we were vulnerable.

"Skye," Liam said, breaking the silence. "I know this is hard for you, but we need to be strategic. We can't let our emotions cloud our judgment."

"I know," I replied, my voice barely a whisper. "But it feels like everything I've worked for is slipping away. I can't lose my pack—not like this."

He placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "We won't. We'll find the traitor, and we'll protect our home."

Just then, a rustling sound echoed from the thicket nearby. My instincts kicked in, and I motioned for silence. We crouched low, the tension palpable as we watched the shadows shift.

Suddenly, a figure darted out of the trees—a flash of fur and a growl. My heart stopped as recognition washed over me. It was one of our own, a young wolf from the pack, but there was something different about him. His eyes glowed with a strange light, and a low growl rumbled from his throat.

"Stop!" I yelled, but he lunged forward, teeth bared.

In a split second, Liam and I shifted into our wolf forms, the adrenaline surging through us. We had to subdue him before he could reach the others. The young wolf charged at us, and I felt a surge of power as I dodged, snapping my jaws just inches from his flank.

Liam moved in from the other side, but before we could pin him down, he turned and bolted deeper into the forest.

"After him!" I shouted, my heart racing. We chased after him, weaving through the trees, the sounds of our footsteps echoing in the night.

But the deeper we went, the more disorienting the shadows became. I could hear the young wolf's frantic breaths ahead of us, but then, just as suddenly as he had appeared, he vanished into the darkness.

"Where did he go?" I panted, scanning the area.

"Skye, look!" Liam pointed to the ground, where a faint trail of blood marked the path he had taken.

I followed the trail, but as we reached a small clearing, I froze. There, in the center, lay the moonstone, pulsating with an ominous glow.

"What the—" Liam started, but before he could finish, a figure emerged from the shadows, cloaked and menacing.

"Welcome, Alpha," the figure said, a smirk playing on their lips. "You've just walked into a trap."

My heart dropped as realization hit. The traitor was among us, and we had walked right into their game.

With a roar, I lunged forward, but the figure waved a hand, and suddenly, the world around us shifted. Darkness enveloped us, and I felt the ground fall away beneath my feet.

As I grasped for stability, the last thing I heard was the echo of Liam's voice, filled with anger and confusion, fading into the void.

And then, everything went black.
