Chapter 197 - fighting against the second strongest devil(1)

The sun hung low on the horizon as the group moved cautiously through the plains, the relief they had felt upon escaping the dungeon now replaced by a growing unease. The eerie silence of the landscape seemed to press down on them, broken only by the crunch of their boots on the grass and the occasional rustle of wind through the trees.

Dakota walked at the front, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. His sharp eyes scanned their surroundings, but his expression was distant, as if his mind was elsewhere.

Dakota:

"Hmm... I feel like I'm forgetting something very important, but I just can't remember it."

Ava glanced at him, her brow furrowed.

Ava:

"What's that supposed to mean? You don't forget things, Dakota."

Dakota shrugged, his lips twitching into a faint smile.

Dakota:

"I'm human, Ava. Well, mostly. Even I can't remember everything all the time."

Franklin, walking beside Duke, snorted.

Franklin:

"Whatever it is, it can't be more important than getting back to civilization. I'm done with monsters and dungeons for a while."

Duke:

"Don't let your guard down, Franklin. This place doesn't feel right."

Lucas chimed in, his frost-covered gloves glinting in the fading light.

Lucas:

"Agreed. It's too quiet. The monsters here don't strike me as the type to let us walk out without a fight."

As if on cue, the ground trembled beneath their feet. The group froze, their hands instinctively going to their weapons. From the tall grass ahead, a pack of monstrous beasts emerged—creatures resembling oversized wolves, their fur bristling with jagged spikes of stone and their glowing red eyes locked on the group.

Liam:

"Spoke too soon, didn't you, Lucas?"

Lucas rolled his eyes, raising his hands as frost began to form around them.

Lucas:

"I'll handle the ones on the right. Don't get in my way."

The wolves howled, their cries echoing across the plains, before charging forward.

Dakota:

"Spread out! Don't let them surround us!"

The group sprang into action. Henry and Ava stood side by side, their flames erupting in coordinated blasts that scorched the wolves as they charged. Liam and Jack worked in tandem, with Liam's lightning magic forcing the creatures into narrow paths while Jack's lightning struck them down with precision.

Lucas conjured a wall of ice to block a group of wolves trying to flank them, then shattered it into jagged shards that impaled the creatures.

Mia and Luna moved gracefully across the battlefield, the water shifting beneath them as Mia used her magic to trap the wolves in pits or crush them with boulders.

Duke and Franklin fought back-to-back, their swords cutting through the monsters with practiced efficiency.

Despite their exhaustion, the group held their ground, the teamwork they had developed over countless battles shining through.

As the last of the wolves fell, the group regrouped, their breaths heavy and their bodies covered in dirt and sweat.

Mia:

"Is everyone okay?"

Luna let out a soft bark, nuzzling against Mia's leg. The others nodded, though their faces showed the strain of the battle.

Dakota:

"Hmm... I really feel like I'm forgetting something important."

Ava threw her hands up in frustration.

Ava:

"You're saying that again? What could possibly be so important that you're thinking about it now?"

Dakota's gaze remained distant, his brow furrowed.

Dakota:

"I don't know... but it feels big. Like something I should have prepared for."

Franklin:

"Whatever it is, you can figure it out later. We've got bigger problems—like getting out of here alive."

Dakota gave a small nod, though the unease in his eyes didn't fade.

The group pressed on, the plains gradually giving way to rocky terrain. The air grew hotter, and the ground beneath their feet felt unnaturally warm.

Duke:

"The environment's changing. We're getting close to something."

Suddenly, the ground erupted in front of them, and a massive, hulking figure emerged. The creature was a golem made of molten rock, its body glowing with the heat of the magma coursing through its veins. Around it, smaller golems of the same material began to rise.

Henry:

"You've got to be kidding me!"

Dakota:

"Stay sharp! The big one's the leader—take it down, and the rest should fall apart!"

The battle was intense. The heat from the golems made it hard to breathe, and the molten projectiles they launched kept the group constantly on the move.

Ava and Henry combined their flames to create a concentrated blast of fire, melting the smaller golems to slag.

Liam and Lucas worked together, using the contrast of lightning and ice to create steam that obscured the golems' vision, allowing Jack to strike with his lightning.

Mia focused on controlling the terrain, creating barriers to block the golems' attacks while Luna darted in to distract them.

Duke and Franklin charged the leader, their swords clashing against its molten exterior. The heat was unbearable, but they pressed on, striking with everything they had.

Finally, Dakota moved in, his blade glowing with an fiery light as he delivered the finishing blow. The leader golem crumbled, and the smaller ones followed suit, collapsing into piles of cooling rock.

The group stood in silence, their exhaustion evident, but the victory gave them a brief sense of triumph.

As the group caught their breath, the air around them began to change. The temperature spiked, and a suffocating pressure settled over the area.

Lucas:

"What... is this?"

A sinister laugh echoed through the air, and the ground beneath them cracked. Flames erupted, forming a fiery portal. From it stepped a figure wreathed in flames. Her fiery hair flowed like liquid fire, and her eyes burned with a malevolent light.

Mia:

"No... it can't be."

Henry:

"Is that... a devil?"

Duke and Franklin immediately drew their weapons, their faces pale.

Duke:

"Impossible. That's Fianna—the Empress of Flames."

Franklin:

"The second strongest devil... What's she doing here?!"

The group was frozen in shock, their minds racing as they tried to comprehend the danger standing before them.

Dakota, however, was calm. He stepped forward, a faint smirk on his face.

Dakota thinking: ah shit so that's what I was forgetting huh... Well damnit how could I forget that? Anyway I have a plan to escape.

Dakota:

"Relax. I actually have a plan. So long as it goes right, we should survive."

Fianna's lips curled into a cruel smile.

Fianna:

"You think you can survive me, little humans? How amusing. Let's see how long that confidence lasts."

Her flames roared to life, the heat washing over the group like a tidal wave. Despite the fear gripping them, they prepared for battle, knowing they had no choice but to fight.
