Chapter 63 - the duel of lightning

The training grounds buzzed with anticipation as Dakota and his friends gathered, eager to witness the long-awaited duel between Liam and Jack. The sun was high, casting long shadows across the dirt arena, and the air felt charged with energy—as if the impending lightning spells would soon set the air itself alight.

Dakota: (Grinning) Are both of you ready?

Liam: (Eyes flashing with determination) I've been waiting three months for this, Dakota. I'm more than ready.

Jack: (Nods) Same here. Don't hold back, Liam. I want to see what you've got.

Dakota looked between the two of them and, with a nod, raised his hand to signal the start of the duel.

Dakota: Let the duel begin!

In an instant, both Liam and Jack sprang into action, their hands glowing with an electric blue light as they summoned their power. Sparks crackled around their fingertips, and the ground beneath them trembled with the raw energy of their magic.

Liam: (Concentrating) Let's see if you can handle this, Jack! [Sends a series of lightning bolts racing toward Jack, each one humming with fierce intensity]

Jack's eyes narrowed as he raised his hands, summoning a barrier of electrical energy. The lightning bolts struck the barrier, creating an explosion of sparks that illuminated his face.

Jack: (Grinning) Not bad, Liam! But you'll have to do better than that. [He dissipates the barrier, sending a chain lightning spell back at Liam, the arcs of electricity branching off like the veins of a tree.]

Liam barely had time to dodge, rolling to the side as the bolts cracked into the ground, leaving smoldering scorch marks where they landed.

Dakota: (Murmuring to himself) They've both gotten stronger… this is going to be a close one.

Ava, standing beside Dakota, crossed her arms, her gaze fixed on the two fighters.

Ava: I didn't know Jack could use chain lightning like that. He's really improved his control.

Henry: (Nodding) Yeah, and look at Liam. He's not backing down either. I think he's hiding something new, too.

Back in the arena, Liam was catching his breath, his mind racing with thoughts of how he could break through Jack's defenses. His hands crackled as he prepared another spell, this one much stronger.

Liam: Alright, Jack, let's see how you handle this! [He extends both hands and channels a stream of focused lightning into a spiraling orb, which then splits into multiple smaller orbs of electric energy. Each orb shot out in different directions, zipping through the air toward Jack like heat-seeking missiles.]

Jack's eyes widened as he tried to dodge, but the orbs adjusted their course, tracking his movements.

Jack: (Impressed) A homing spell? You've definitely been practicing!

As the orbs closed in, Jack concentrated, gathering his energy into his fists. He then punched the ground, sending a shockwave of electricity that disrupted the orbs, causing them to explode in bursts of static before they could reach him.

Liam: (Frustrated) Always one step ahead, huh?

Jack: You should know by now that I don't go down that easily!

Jack dashed forward, using his momentum to cover the distance between them. He raised his hand, conjuring a massive spear of lightning that crackled and sparked.

Jack: (With a grin) Let's see if you can handle this!

He hurled the spear toward Liam, the air around it humming with power. Liam's face tightened in concentration as he brought his hands up, preparing a new spell he'd been working on in secret.

Liam: (Murmuring) Time to show you my own trump card…

With a quick motion, Liam created a shield made of condensed lightning, its surface shimmering with an electric blue glow. The spear struck the shield, and for a moment, there was a fierce struggle between the two forces as sparks flew in all directions.

Just as it seemed the spear would break through, Liam let out a shout and pushed the shield forward, deflecting the spear back at Jack. Jack dodged just in time, the spear whizzing past him and dissipating in the distance.

Dakota: (Whispering to Ava) Did you see that? Liam's shield deflected Jack's spell!

Ava: That's incredible. I didn't even know lightning could be used defensively like that.

In the arena, both Liam and Jack were breathing heavily, sweat glistening on their brows. But neither was ready to give up.

Liam: (Determined) I'm not done yet, Jack. I've got one more trick up my sleeve.

He took a deep breath, channeling all his remaining energy into a single hand. Slowly, a sphere of concentrated lightning formed above his palm, growing denser and brighter with each passing second. This wasn't just any lightning; it was raw, condensed energy, dangerous and difficult to control.

Jack: (Eyes widening) That's… that's new.

Liam: (Grinning) I call it Thunderclap. Let's see how you handle it!

Liam thrust his hand forward, sending the Thunderclap straight at Jack. The orb flew forward, its electric hum building to a deafening roar as it closed the distance.

Jack's face tightened with focus. He knew he had to counter this or lose. Summoning every last bit of his strength, he held out both hands, drawing the electricity from the ground around him. Slowly, he began to form a swirling vortex of lightning that absorbed the incoming Thunderclap.

Jack: (Straining) You're not the only one with new tricks, Liam!

The vortex held, but just barely. Jack's face was twisted in concentration as he struggled to contain the power of the Thunderclap. Sparks flew wildly around him, illuminating the arena in flashes of blue and white.

Dakota: (Shouting) Watch out, Jack! That's a lot of energy to handle!

Jack gritted his teeth, channeling all his focus into maintaining the vortex. But even he could feel his grip slipping. Just as the vortex began to destabilize, Jack let out a shout and hurled the remaining energy back at Liam in a wide, arcing wave of electricity.

Liam barely had time to react. He threw up his shield, but the impact sent him skidding backward across the arena floor. His shield flickered and finally shattered, leaving him on his knees, exhausted but still standing.

Dakota: (Clapping) Incredible! You guys… that was unbelievable.

The others cheered as both fighters caught their breath, their energy depleted but their spirits high. Liam slowly straightened, a proud smile on his face as he looked at Jack.

Jack: (Grinning, though clearly exhausted) Looks like you got me in the end, Liam. Barely, but a win's a win.

Liam: (Nods, panting) Yeah… I guess it is.

The crowd erupted in applause, the air around them still humming faintly with residual static from the duel.

Dakota: (Stepping forward) That was one of the best duels I've ever seen. You both fought incredibly well. Honestly, I couldn't have predicted who would come out on top.

Ava: (Nodding in agreement) Same here. That Thunderclap spell was amazing, Liam. And Jack, that vortex was brilliant.

Liam and Jack exchanged a respectful nod. For both of them, the duel had been more than a test of skill—it was a chance to push their abilities and learn from each other. They knew that with every duel, they became stronger together.

Henry: Alright, how about we head back and get something to eat? I think you two deserve a feast after that.

Laughing, the group made their way out of the training grounds, leaving the charred marks of the duel behind as a reminder of the fierce clash they'd witnessed. As they walked, Dakota glanced back at the arena, a thoughtful look in his eyes.

Dakota: (To himself) If they're already this powerful now… who knows what we'll all be capable of in the future.

As the group was about to head back to the academy, Luna stepped forward with a determined look in her eyes, catching everyone's attention.

Luna: Actually… I want a duel too.

Everyone turned to her, surprised.

Mia: (Smiling) Oh? Who did you have in mind?

Luna: You, Mia. I've been wanting to test my skills against you for a while.

Mia looked taken aback for a moment but then grinned, nodding in agreement.

Mia: Alright, Luna. Let's see what you've got. I accept your challenge.

The group exchanged glances, excitement building as they realized another thrilling duel was on the horizon.

Dakota: (Laughing) Looks like the action never ends with us! Alright, let's head back, get some rest, and meet back here tomorrow for another duel.

As they headed back to the academy, everyone buzzed with excitement about the next duel, eager to see what kind of magic Luna and Mia would bring to the training grounds.
