Chapter 53 - Chapter 53: Try to dodge It

The cold, gleaming scalpel sliced through the air, aiming directly at Logan.

Though Ashley couldn't see what was happening, her mind conjured up a bloody, gruesome image, and she was so terrified she almost screamed out loud.

She clamped her hand over her mouth to stifle the sound.

However, the blood-soaked scene Ashley envisioned never came. Dr. Blackwood's scalpel missed its target completely!

He was shocked, his expression changing instantly.

Where was he?

"Are you looking for me?"

A bright light accompanied Logan's voice, suddenly illuminating the darkness.

Logan stood two meters away from Dr. Blackwood, holding a powerful flashlight. The blinding light dispelled the darkness in the gymnasium.

"Ah!!"

This time, Ashley couldn't hold back her scream.

"How are you over there?! I clearly remember you were sleeping here!"

Dr. Blackwood shielded his eyes from the blinding light with one hand, while pointing the scalpel at Logan with the other.

"Oh, I sleep wherever I want" Logan replied calmly.

"Impossible! We didn't hear you move at all! And where did you get that flashlight?"

Ashley's face was full of panic, realizing they had been discovered.

Logan shrugged and answered her question:

"I don't know whether to call you smart or foolish. I just moved before this school doctor lay down. The sound of his movement covered mine. As for the flashlight, I took it out of my backpack."

"By the way, are you two staying up all night to try and kill me?"

Logan smiled as he turned to look at Ashley, asking casually.

"But I have a habit. I never sleep in the same room with strangers. If I do, I never actually fall asleep."

After struggling through the apocalypse, he had become all too familiar with the malice of human nature.

The moment he saw Dr. Blackwood, he sensed a murderous aura, as if the man had just killed someone.

So when the candle went out, Logan cautiously changed his spot.

Since being reborn, Logan had also become highly sensitive to the gaze of others. Even in the darkness, he could still feel faint traces of killing intent.

So he had already opened his eyes.

It seemed Dr. Blackwood didn't want to live another night.

Logan's eerie smile, combined with the current situation, sent chills down Ashley's spine.

Was this really the Logan she once knew?

Logan didn't waste any more words. He stepped forward quickly, easily snatched the scalpel from Dr. Blackwood's hand, and plunged it into Dr. Blackwood's chest.

"No!"

Ashley's voice rang out just as the scalpel pierced Dr. Blackwood's heart.

It all happened so fast that Dr. Blackwood didn't have time to react.

He could barely focus through the physiological tears streaming from his eyes due to the blinding light, but he managed to glance down at his chest in disbelief.

The scalpel had completely sunk into his heart, leaving only the handle visible. Blood spread outward from the wound in a scarlet bloom around the scalpel.

In the next second, he collapsed to the ground with a thud.

Logan remained expressionless, as if he had just done something trivial. He turned to look at Ashley, who was now too shocked to speak.

Since waking up after the geomagnetic storm, Logan had noticed that his physical abilities had become extraordinary.

Whether it was speed, strength, or reflexes, he was now far beyond what he used to be.

Ashley's eyes widened in terror, her body rooted to the ground, trembling uncontrollably.

"Don't... don't kill me..."

Ashley realized her fate and desperately pleaded:

"I can be your girlfriend. Don't kill me. You can do anything you want to me. Please, Logan! We were friends in high school, right? Actually... I've always liked you!"

Her desperate eyes were filled with a glimmer of hope, and she forced a look of affection onto her face.

"Okay. I'll give you a chance."

Logan smiled, but his eyes were ice-cold, and his next words were chilling:

"I'll shoot at you. If you can dodge, I'll let you live."

Ashley's pupils shrank in shock as she watched Logan conjure a gun out of thin air and point it at her.

"I'll count down from three. After that, I'll pull the trigger."

Without giving Ashley a chance to protest, Logan began counting:

"Three."

Ashley's eyes filled with despair.

"Two."

Suddenly, Ashley's gaze sharpened.

"..."

Before Logan could count to one, he pulled the trigger.

In that instant, Ashley's entire demeanor changed.

Her pupils shrank to the size of pinpoints, and she instinctively moved her body just slightly to the side, dodging the bullet that would have been impossible to avoid!

Realizing she had evaded the shot, Ashley's face lit up with overwhelming joy.

She screamed internally, I did it! I dodged it!!

"Bang!"

But before the joy could fade from Ashley's face, a bullet exploded into her shoulder.

She cried out in pain, clutching her wounded shoulder as she fell to the ground.

Logan had fired a second shot.

"Only able to dodge one shot, huh?"

Logan's expression showed disappointment.

He had only wanted to use Ashley's last moments to see if she could unlock her genetic potential in the face of death.

Now, he was certain that Ashley had indeed unlocked her gene lock.
