Chereads / Odyssey Of The Golden Ring / Chapter 19 - The Winding String

Chapter 19 - The Winding String

The old world is dying, and the new world is coming a world made of men and women born to rule over the laws of this world. A world built by the will of man, not of gods. Ash, you are going to be a part of the great changes that will show us the truth, the reasoning behind it all.

"Is that why there is conflict in the world? Why the great powers of this world want to conquer our land and start wars? Is it because of this?"

"Yes, that is why. We must be the first to learn of this. If we don't, we will fall victim to the might of our curiosity."

"Others? What do you mean by others…? It seems others have knowledge of this thing."

"Yes, there are other countries that might have this power, but this lab is the only one closest to finding the truth of the universe."

"We are chasing something that is beyond our understanding, something that might lead to our death. And you believe the only way to fight against them is to find the secret first?"

"Yes..."

"And then build a bomb like we—"

"How many of us fall victim to our own damnation? This understanding of these laws will better our survival. Do you think men build guns to kill others or to protect themselves? We are scientists; we seek the truth. If not, why let those who believe they are gods wield this power? If we do, we will fall victim to our damnation."

"But how do you know you won't fall victim to your own death? That the madness of godhood won't claim you as well?"

"There is a winding string that watches us all. We are beings who fall victim to this loop of the unknown. We fall victim to the lust for what will be, only to fall victim to the moment that will kill us. We are our own fault, our own madness, our own damnation" Cain said looking at me with his perfect face and perfect wish.

I thought, how funny it is that all of this—the faith, the wonders, the reasoning of our existence—leads back to the same questions, and yet, we still fear it. Or is it just me? The part of me that wishes not to question existence at all? Is it me, the one who wishes for silence instead of answers? Sometimes I wonder if all we need to do is stop...

Then a flash of memories came to me—a word I had been searching for"We must hope, Ash. If we don't, what meaning is there? To give in to the madness and malice of this world? Let it be so—you hope for me."

Oh, Emily. I thought to myself Why do you haunt me, Mother?

"Alright, Cain," I said finally. "I will help. But we must do our best to help the world and not fall to the forces of evil within it."

Cain looked at me, his gaze steady. "I promise, Ash, that we will do great things for the world with this newfound understanding."

As I reached out for his hand, he stepped closer, wrapping his arms around me in a firm embrace. And together, we began to walk out of the central laboratory and into the outer part of the cave.

Walking, I could remember an emotion that I had not felt in a long time, and that was longing for a better day, for a better time. My heart was pumping, and I could see all of the great friends that had been with me, simply wanting to see how I had greatly helped the world. I could even see her.

The future for it looked like a dream of something grand, a world for the better, a world for those who could find peace. Will I find peace in this world with this great knowledge, or will I fall?
