Amara sat behind her desk, blissfully unaware of the impending disaster about to walk through the door. She was trying to enjoy the brief respite after the whirlwind of panic from the night before. Elara had accepted the offer miraculously and now, all she had to do was stay out of sight, work quietly in her small office next to her parents', and avoid any further catastrophes.
Simple, right?
"Finally, some peace," Amara mumbled, kicking her feet up on her desk. She allowed herself a rare moment of smugness. For once, things had gone her way, and she hadn't even had to bribe anyone or worse, beg. Not that she was above bribing, but it was nice to win on merit.
[You barely scraped by, you know.]
"Oh, don't ruin this for me," she grumbled aloud, too tired to mentally spar with her annoying system.
[Just keeping you grounded.]
"Yeah, yeah." Amara waved her hand dismissively. "Grounded, my ass."
