' "Everyone in life has ups and downs. Some have it like leaps, some have stairs and some have it like rollercoasters. Some have all their problems simultaneously, so some have it like a canon. It seems like my life has everything on the worse side." Abigail cried.'
The novel started to seem more melodramatic than romantic as it claimed. I kept the novel on the sofa upside down and stared at the white screen of my laptop.
Page 1. Thesis, in bold letters. I couldn't just think of anything to write and I had to submit this draft of my thesis by next week.
I looked at the file and notes, all kept on the table, and a pack of cigarettes.
Owing myself a cigarette, I went to the balcony of my one-bedroom apartment. I take one out of the packet and put it on my lips. When I took out the lighter, I heard a woman giggling.
"Your new apartment is better than the PG you lived in before. That one stank."
"Hmm." He kissed the girl on the cheek and said, "This is affordable and near the university. Can't believe found such accommodation in Bangalore."
I lit the cigarette and took a puff. I leaned over the railing and saw a lean, tall guy standing with a short petite girl who unlike the guy looked like she was about to leave any time soon.
"Thank god. I don't have to deal with weird noises tonight. I hope they know that the walls are thin here." I thought.
"Hey, dude. I must leave now. I have to return home." She said and left the balcony.
The guy remained, turning his back to the railing. He turned towards me and was surprised at my presence. He gave a short nod and I gave him the same.
"Should I drop?" He asked, turning back to the girl.
"Nah, I'll drive. I got my license." She said excitedly.
"You sure you don't want me to drive?" He asked and entered back, closing the balcony window.
I finished my cigarette and returned. I looked at my laptop. I couldn't think of anything new to add, so I shut it down, and I packed it for tomorrow's class.
