The resistance convoy sped through Neo-Tokyo's decaying streets, their engines humming low to avoid detection. The city loomed around them like a sleeping beast, its neon veins pulsating with artificial life. Above, drone patrols swept the skyline, their bright searchlights slicing through the smog.
Rei sat in the lead vehicle, his gaze locked on the horizon. The closer they got to Sector 7, the more his chest tightened. Beside him, Aiko tightened the strap on her katana. Her face was calm, but her fingers betrayed her nervous energy as they tapped rhythmically against the hilt.
Behind them, Kaito rode in silence, his cybernetic eyes glowing faintly as he scanned the data feeds from the resistance's modified drones. His presence was a black hole, sucking the trust from the air, but his knowledge was their best shot at success.
"We're approaching the outer perimeter," Kenji's voice crackled over the comms. "Surveillance density is increasing. If we're going to jam their network, it's now or never."
"Do it," Rei ordered.
Kenji's modified EMP drone buzzed to life, flying ahead of the convoy. Moments later, a dull pulse rippled through the air, and the red lights of nearby cameras flickered out.
"Window's open," Kenji confirmed. "But it's short. Move fast."
The Breach
The convoy stopped at the edge of Sector 7's perimeter. The team quickly disembarked, moving silently through the shadows. Ahead, the bio-enhancement lab loomed—a sleek, fortress-like structure surrounded by towering walls and automated turrets.
Kaito stepped forward, pulling a small device from his pocket. "This will scramble the turret targeting systems for three minutes. After that, we're fair game."
Rei nodded. "Three minutes is all we need. Aiko, take point."
Aiko darted ahead, her movements fluid and silent. Rei followed closely, his pulse hammering in his ears. The rest of the team spread out, each member taking their assigned position.
As Kaito activated the scrambling device, the turrets powered down with a faint whir. The team surged forward, scaling the wall with grappling hooks. Once over, they moved quickly across the courtyard, heading for the lab's main entrance.
Inside, the sterile white corridors glowed with an eerie blue light. The hum of machinery filled the air, interspersed with the occasional clatter of footsteps echoing in the distance.
"We split here," Rei whispered. "Aiko, Kaito, and I will head to the control hub. Kenji, take your team to the server room and plant the data worm. Stay on comms."
Kenji nodded. "Got it. Be careful."
The Oni Reveal
As they navigated deeper into the lab, Kaito motioned for them to stop. "This is it," he said, pointing to a reinforced door marked with a glowing red warning sign. "The control hub is on the other side."
Aiko approached the door, her katana unsheathed and ready. "What's the plan?"
Kaito held up a small device resembling a keycard. "This will bypass the lock. But once we're in, expect heavy resistance."
Rei clenched his fists. "Let's move."
The door slid open with a hiss, revealing a massive chamber filled with rows of cylindrical tanks. Inside each tank floated a humanoid figure, their bodies augmented with sleek, metallic plating. The Oni units.
Aiko's eyes widened. "They're already operational."
"Not fully," Kaito said, his voice grim. "But they're close. If they finish these, MiraiTech won't need The Overseer to control the city. These things will do the dirty work."
As they moved toward the central console, an alarm blared. Red lights flooded the room, and the tanks began to drain.
"They're activating!" Aiko shouted, gripping her katana tightly.
"Cover me!" Kaito yelled as he ran to the console, his hands flying over the interface.
Rei and Aiko positioned themselves in front of him, their weapons drawn. The first Oni unit stepped out of its tank, its glowing red eyes locking onto them. It moved with terrifying speed, lunging at Aiko with razor-sharp claws.
She ducked, slashing upward with her katana. Sparks flew as her blade met metal, but the Oni barely flinched.
"These things are armored!" she called out.
"Go for the joints!" Rei shouted, firing his modified pistol at the Oni's knees. The bullets found their mark, and the creature staggered before collapsing.
But more tanks were opening.
Betrayal in the Chaos
As Rei and Aiko fought off the Oni units, Kaito continued working at the console. "Almost there," he muttered.
"Make it faster!" Rei barked, his voice strained as he wrestled with an Oni unit trying to crush him.
Suddenly, the console emitted a low beep, and the lights in the chamber flickered.
"It's done," Kaito said, stepping back.
But instead of deactivating, the remaining Oni units stopped and turned toward Rei and Aiko, their movements eerily synchronized.
"What's happening?" Aiko demanded, her voice sharp with suspicion.
Kaito smirked, the glow in his cybernetic eyes intensifying. "You didn't think I'd make it that easy, did you?"
Rei's stomach dropped. "You—"
Before he could finish, the Oni units advanced, their movements faster and more coordinated than before.
"Kaito!" Aiko shouted, her katana pointed at him.
"You wanted access to the heart of MiraiTech? Congratulations," Kaito said, stepping back toward the exit. "You're in it. Good luck surviving."
And with that, he disappeared through the doorway, leaving Rei and Aiko surrounded by a horde of deadly machines.
The Fight for Survival
Rei and Aiko stood back to back, their breaths ragged.
"We'll deal with him later," Rei growled. "Right now, we survive."
Aiko nodded, her grip tightening on her blade. "Together."
As the Oni units closed in, the fight of their lives began.
