Chapter 4 - First Blood

The three squads of three men continued to advance on the mutant before them.

And they open fire without hesitation.

Unable to unleash hell using automatic weapons the bolt action rifles fired off in sequence with each squad firing after the other causing the sound as if an automatic weapon had been unleashed.

The echo of gunfire was like a roaring lion, as countless bullets flew towards the dog.

The beast cried out in pain as the left and right teams had targetted its eyes, while the centre force was aimed at it's open mouth targeting it's internals.

As it was found out if a gun targetted the same spot it could penetrate this 2nd tier beasts fur defenses.

The dog howled in anger and charged towards the three men in front of it.

Seeing that their guns were only minimally effective, Alpha made a gesture and his 2 men put their guns down and drew their combat knives.

They were going to take this beast on in close quarters combat.

I remained calm on the surface, but internally I was freaking out, if the three in front of my fell to the beast, I would have to chose the allied or soviet teams on either side to escape with while the other would need to sacrifice themselves for our escape.

[Please be at rest Master, every Red Alert Solider has the initial strength comparable to the peak of soldiers from your previous world, according to the classification used by this world they are considered peak 1st tier. It should not be difficult for a team of them to deal with a low 2nd tier beast.]

You mentioned tiers is that how strength is classified in this world?

[Most people are ordinary in other words below 1st tier or 0 tier if you like. those who have reached first tier have entered the path of the extraordinary. Some people who surpass ordinary people are also called superhumans. The highest tier according to the system is 10th tear, but not even one 9th tear has appeared on this Earth as of yet.]

Well that's not strange I mean in Red Alert 2 their had an experience system where units could "level up" and get stronger as well so not like they couldn't also get stronger, but that system was limited to only four ranks above normal, getting one-three chevrons of veterancy before becoming an elite with a star shaped rank instead.

so that means my troops can only rank up to the 5th tier overall then?

But this thought was rejected by the System support

[Master, this system is not what you know. there is no limit to the growth of the forces you deploy, but there will be a small bottle neck between the veterancy to elite rank you denoted. Once they've crossed it they can continue to grow.]

What bottleneck?

[System support cannot tell you now as that information is hidden. Only when a soldier or unit reaches peak 4th tier can you find out.]

As I was discussing with my system support Alpha and the two others had swiftly attacked the mutant. Alpha attracted its attention while the other two slipped to it's sides.

The three moved quickly, and if it were before the Apocalypse, they would have been world class olympic sprinters.

The mutant opened its mouth looking to take a bit out of Alpha. Most people would be scared but Alpha remained calm and stabbed his knife towards the beasts chin

Ching!

The knife did not penetrate due to clashing with it's teeth resulting in sparks being drawn through the air.

The beasts teeth were as hard as metal.

The dog meanwhile screamed in pain as the knives penetrated it's fur defence at it's sides.

Each RA soldiers knife was capable of harming a 2nd Tier beast as Jake had just found out from his support, and now 2 of these knives were deeply embedded into both sides of the beasts neck.

the battle continued with the three causing numerous wounds all over the beasts head, causing the beast to attempt retreat only to be shot in it's back feet by the supporting squad who still had their guns trained on the beast.

Another gunshot also rang out as well,

Looking across Jake realized the four they were saving had shot towards the beast but this angered him for if the beast moved and the shot missed what was beyond was his own forces.

The beauty seemed to think the same as she decked the man who'd fired his pistol, screaming out in fury.

"Do you want to die! Cant you see there are people in front of you? Get lost you're no longer worthy of being a member of my Clover squad"

Having been punched in the face the man fell to the ground looking over the plaza to Jake with resentment until he collected his gun got to his feet and ran off without saying another word.

"Commander should we...?"

With the fight already decided some of his soldiers had come back to guard Jake, Delta meanwhile made a throat slitting gesture after raising the question.

According to the system all RA troops any hostile action even something as low as disrespect against the commander made one an enemy and had to be eliminated, but they were a military and would not act without the commanders approval.

At first he hesitated before nodding his head.

Delta took Echo and the two ran off into an alley.

I know from numerous stories that letting someone openly hostile to me go would only come to bite me in the ass later on so I assented to his early elimination.

Even if he was spared the man would not be grateful.

The battle ended a short while later as the three with knives easily dealt the killing blow to the mutant dog.

Which showcased the unit's strength before the humans of this world.

"Commander, the enemy has been eliminated. Please give further instructions."

Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie looked to me with bated breath as the others maintained a guard formation in case the humans tried any further hostile action against us.

"Um..."

I've never seen a mutant beast before, can we eat it's meat?

The system could create soldiers, but never in the game did you need to worry about food so he doubted the system based off the game could provide food, and if he had an army he'd need a lot of food to survive.

[The Mutant Beast can be recycled and the system can absorb its energy and convert it into credits. This second-tier beast can be converted into 500 credits.]

I was overjoyed to hear this from the system support, knowing in this apocalyptic world I had a near infinite source of credits.

All I had to do was hunt more mutants, and find out the rewards for taking down zombies as well.

The young man wanted to say something as his mouth kept opening and closing like a gaping fish.

Though his face was red from embarrassment unable to ask for the slain mutant beast they had lost two of their own in the fight against it, as without their saviours the lot of them would have died long ago.

As there were outsiders present, Jake opted to not recycle the beast.

Instead he had the soldiers carve up the beast, dividing the meat, fangs, and claws into various piles.

"Commander, we found something."

Alpha stated holding up a pale yellow crystal in front of Jake.

It kind of looked like a gem but not one he'd ever seen before, maybe some kind of pale amber?

But not showing his confusion. After all these might be common knowledge of this world.

If he acted like this was new to him it could be beyond suspicious.

Glancing over he saw the looks of envy on the beauty's team's faces.

Well that confirms it's a good thing at least.

[Sould Gem located. Should we absorb it?]

The support asked.

What is this soul gem and what does it do?

[There are two ways presently to use it, one is to let the system recycle it and increase credits, this gem can increase credits by 1000. the other option is to give it to a soldier who has a high chance of advancing by one tier]

Upon hearing so my eyes lit up.

I was in an unfamiliar place and needed strength to protect me. However all my soldiers and even new ones I could summon were only 1st tier even if they were the peak. If I had a 2nd tier i'd have greater safety than if I just used this gem to summon another 9 1st tiers.

Thinking of this Jake rolled the gem in his fingers before returning it to Alpha.

"Eat this."

Without hesitation Alpha grabbed the stone and swallowed it whole.

Leaving the humans stunned by his actions.
