Chapter Five
The Enemy In The Shadows
A loud scream was heard, "I don't care about some stupid prophecy!" Cana exclaimed it in the penthouse. Sometimes it seems as if a person gets up on the stand, and all one wants is the truth!
Zane sighed and looked down, his shoulders hunching up. He looked haggard and exhausted, not at all like the Lycan King that he was the previous night.
"You weren't supposed to hear that," He whispered.
Cana folded her arms over her chest and scowled at him. "Yes I did". "Okay, then start explaining. "
The warm glow of early sunlight fell across the room through the windows and stretched shadows on the floor. Cana had woken up confused and scared as the night before seemed to come back to haunt her. Then she heard Zane's angry voice from the other room.
Now, standing in front of him, she got confused and experienced only fury and something which was beyond her understanding at the moment.
Zane let out a breath, ruffling the top of his head of hair and making it look even more disheveled. "Let us take a seat here, this might take some time. "
They got in the sitting room, both of them sat at the two extremes of the sofa. Cana was poised to flee at any one point as his muscles were rigid.
"I want to apologize for hiding things from you. " Zane said. "I was attempting to shield you. "
Cana snorted as they scoffed at him again, "Fat lot of good that did. Now spill, what's this prophecy about?"
Then, Zane looked at her, directly into her eyes, his gaze solemn. "We have a tale my people," He continued, "It tells of a wolf who is born of two families, a wolf who shall bring together all the packs against the blackness. "
Cana's heart raced. "And you think that is … me?"
"I know it is," Zane said firmly. "Your parents were of two of the oldest and most influential clans," he said, "When you were born, the elders sensed a change in the tide. "
Cana just nodded her head, she could not believe it, everything seemed unbelievable. However, it is established by saying, "But why did my parents die? Why was I raised as a human?"
Succinct pain reflected on Zane's face. "Your parents' enemies were afraid of the prophecy. They attempted to kill you and your siblings. Your parents died to protect all of you. I saved you from their enemies and placed you in a normal household to be protected. "
Can tears begin in Cana's eyes? She wiped them off with an angry look. "This evil is supposed to be so great that we're supposed to fight it, but what is it, really?"
Zane never got a chance to reply because his phone rang. He was white faced as he listened to what the caller had to say.
"What is it?" Cana asked and there was a hint of fear in her.
Zane's eyes were black with anxiety. "It is Axel's pack. They are under attack. "
Cana's heart dropped. Still, she had not changed and still thought about her old pack. "By who?"
"We don't know," Zane replied, making a frowning face. Also, it's quite unpleasant for me to stay here and listen to, "But it sounds bad. Really bad. "
Cana got up from the chair with her decision made. This is a quote by her showing her determination to help them, thus the tagline "We have to help them. "
Zane looked surprised. ''Are you sure? How can you forget all that Axel has done to you?''
"They're still my pack," Cana said firmly. This is probably the thought that runs through the minds of those who care for others, "I can't just abandon them. "
Zane's face was expressionless but a small smile appeared on his lips. What you have just said is why you are the one from the prophecy.
The drive back to Manhattan was rather silent. In Cana's mind, the flurry of all that she had learned going round. She still had so many questions, but those would have to wait.
''What exactly are we walking into?'' she asked as they approached the pack's area.
Zane clenched the wheel in his hands and felt a cold sweat break out on the back of his neck. "I'm not sure, the call just said they were under attack by some sort of evil power, many of them were injured, possibly some killed. "
Cana's stomach churned. "And we are just the two of us against this… whatever it is?"
"I've called backup," Zane said to her. "But we'll get there first", the last remark being, "Are you ready for this?"
Cana sighed. "No, I will not do it. " "Yes, I will do it anyway. "
They stopped the car near the pack house and Cana turned to look at the building in disbelief. The place was in ruins. Broken windows, doors that opened and closed only half way. The stench of blood and sweat was in the air.
Cana was not an exception; she quickly opened the door of the car and got out before it could even come to a complete halt. She ran in the direction of the house with Zane right at her heels.
Inside was chaos. Across the areas of the pack, numerous members were seen to be injured. Some of those remaining looked stunned.
"Cana?" A friendly voice said.
She looked around to notice Axel walking towards her with the help of a walking stick. He had a cut and swelling on the face and his left arm was paralyzed and listless.
"What happened?" Cana asked.
Axel was looking at him with wide-eyed fear. "I don't know. They emerged from the shadows. Silhouettes. Moving incredibly fast. We could not get near them. "
Zane growled softly, "I, for one, do not like such tactics. " "Where are they now?"
"Gone," Axel said. "For now, but they will be back" his eyes met Cana's, begging for help. "Help us. " I beg.
Cana felt torn. She felt a part of her wanting to betray Axel as well as the pack that deceived her for all these times. But a larger part couldn't turn a blind eye to their pain.
She glanced at the wounded wolves, at their terror-stricken faces. Then she turned to Zane They had been communicating for some time now but this was the first time she was seeing him physically.
"So what do you think?" she whispered.
Zane's expression was grim. "This is far from pack rivalries," Cana said, her voice rising in confrontation "If these things come back they won't stop here They'll keep escalating. "
Cana nodded slowly. She looked at Axel and took a proper stance with her shoulders.
"Alright," she said. "I'll help. But not for you. For them. " She pointed to the pack members who were evidently in a lot of pain.
Relief flooded Axel's face. "Thank you," he interrupted quickly, "I know I am not worthy of your help but—"
"Save it," Cana said to interrupt him. "We have to prepare ourselves. They will return at any time. "
