Skyler
I was now waiting outside the hospital room praying for some good news. Please grandma please please please be fine. When I opened the door I found grandma unconscious on the floor. I tried to wake her up but she wasn't waking up.
I called the ambulance and since then the doctors have been checking up on her. Please God, don't take her away from me. She is the only family I have. After three long hours, the doctors came out and by the gloomy look on the face. I knew he didn't have good news."Are you family of Mrs. Rose?"
"Yes. I am her granddaughter." I reply wiping my tears.
"You should call your parents." That made me cry even more. If they were here, I wouldn't have suffered."They are not with us. You are scaring me. What happened?"
He sighs and says "I am sorry but we couldn't save her. She had a heart attack and it was too late. We tried everything..." No, no, no This can't happen. As he said we couldn't save her. Everything went black. He was saying something but I could hear his words echoing 'we could not save her'.
The doctor left and I fell on my knees. It was all because of me. My grandma died because of me. If only I had picked up her call we could have reached on time. At least I could have heard her voice for the last time. I break down at the thought of grandma not with me anymore.
Shane
"What are you thinking about Shane?" Tyler asks me when I was lost in thoughts.
"Skyler. It's been ten days."
It's been ten days since she left and all I could think was of her.
I remember everything that happened. I got ready for work and after a long time, I was happy thinking about the night at the beach and realizing that I have feelings for her. I wanted to confess my feelings for her.
I was about to start driving to work when I got a message from her saying she was fine.
I went off to work and sat on my chair looking through my scheduled. I gave Skyler a day off and then in about an hour, Skyler barged in.
I was not expecting her today. I had told her to take a leave and rest. I stood up and walk up to her. There was something wrong. I had a feeling something is going to happen. Her eyes were puffy and red. She had tears in her eyes.
"Skyler, Are you fine? I told you to take a rest and why are there tears in your eyes? What happened?"
"This is what you wanted." She said in a soft voice as her voice breaks due to crying. I was getting confused."What I wanted?"
"Drive me to an extent that I would resign."I didn't know what she was talking about. "We dropped that so long ago. I forgot about it."
"I don't think so. Well, congratulations Shane Smith. I lost and you won. I can't believe I was so naive to have believed you." She claps as tears streamed down her cheeks. My eyes were getting teary to realize she thinks that low of me. I don't blame her. I judged her too. It pained me to see her crying."Skyler..."
I take a step closer. All I wanted to do was to hug her and comfort her till she stopped crying. She stepped back pushing my hand away from her."You won. I resign." Then she walks out of my cabin.
"Skyler..." Tyler comes in and looks at me with a concerned look on his face.
"What the hell happened here? Why was Skyler crying?" Does he ask me? I wish I knew.
"I don't know Ty. Everything was fine until yesterday and now out of nowhere she came into my room and said she resigns."
"What? Tell me everything." He was confused as I was. "I will explain everything later just go after her. I don't think she wants to see me now."
I sent Tyler and he did talk to her. Tyler came back with a sad look on his face. She said she will be back and that she needs time but I couldn't wait anymore.
What if she never comes back? At least I want to know what happened all of a sudden. I wanted a chance to explain my side. I wanted to ask her what wrong I did? I grabbed my car keys from the keyholder."Where are you going?"
"To Skyler's house. I can't wait for her anymore. What if she never comes? I want to talk to her once. I can't lose her like that." Tyler stood up from his seat."I don't think I can stop you so best of luck."
"Bye."
I took my car to her house. I hurried through the traffic and finally when I reached her building. I parked my car as I asked the watchman for her flat number. I went upstairs by the lift and as I approached her door I found it open.
I called out for her but she didn't answer so I went in. The house was a mess. There were cracked plates on the kitchen cabinet and as I took a close look there were bloodstains. Something was not right.
I took a look around to find Skyler sitting on the floor by the couch. Her face was pale and it looked like she was crying for days. Her eyes were all puffy and red and she was staring at the floor deep in thoughts. I was thinking of what I did that she is so hurt. She was still looking at the floor unaware of my presence. So lost that when I sat beside her, she didn't know I was here. "Skyler..."
She hugged me and I held her back. Then she broke down into tears."It was all my fault. I shouldn't have declined her calls. She passed away because I was too late to take her to the hospital."
Her grandmother was her only family and now I knew why she was like this. She was hurting and took me by surprise. I held her back and listened to her. I hold her face and wipe away her tears. As I hold her she was down with fever. Her body was boiling. "Hey, It's not your fault. May your grandmother rest in peace. Do you think she would be happy to see you like this if she were here? Now you have a high fever so I am going to call the doctor. I will not listen to anything."
"You shouldn't be here. Why are you here?" She coughs while speaking.
I stood up when she stands up losing balance. "You should go. I will be fine."
"I don't know what made you think that, Skyler? Can you please leave everything aside? You are not well. We will talk about everything later. Please listen to me this once."
"Why should I listen to you?"
She was coughing while speaking. Her body was burning due to fever. Still, she was stubborn and won't listen to me but I made my mind if she doesn't listen I will lift her and take her forcefully.
"I can go by myself. I don't need you. You think you are a hero who will come and save me. I can do everything by myself. I always have and always will. Why are you here? Shane..." She was not well at all but I knew she won't take my help. She was stubborn like me. She was coughing continuously and had a high fever yet she won't let me help her.
"I know you won't believe me but I missed you. Please listen to me, Skyler. I don't know what I did but I am sorry." I went close to her and this time I pulled her in a hug as I said."I am getting used to having you by my side."
She stood still and didn't hold me back."Skyler..."
As I held her in my arms. She didn't hold me back as I hold her by her shoulders. Her eyes were closed and before she fell. I caught hold of her."Skyler..."
She was not opening her eyes. She is so adamant. She won't listen to me. I picked her up and took her to the hospital as fast as I can. The doctors checked on her while I waited outside. "Doctor, is everything alright?"
"She is fine now. She regained her consciousness. She has not been taking her meals also she has had frequent chest pain and coughing along with fever so we would run some tests also she needs rest for at least a week. She has to take her meals properly and proper rest till we see what are in the reports? You can take your wife home after we do the tests." She is not my wife but I didn't correct him.
The doctor left and a man approached me."Is Skyler here?"
"And you are," I asked him. Don't tell me you are Skyler's boyfriend.
"Her landlord." I sighed. Phew!
"You can tell me whatever it is," I tell him.
"Can you please inform her that she has to move out before Wednesday? I dropped her many messages and calls about it but she didn't answer. The watchman told me she is in the hospital." This man comes into the hospital to tell her to vacate the apartment. How cold-hearted he is but I kept my calm to not lose my temper.
"Fine. Is this because of rent? I will pay whatever it is but she can't know about it."
"Yes and no. I have to give away the apartment to my parents."
"Fine. She will take her belongings by Wednesday." After the landlord left. I went in to see Skyler. She might be tired of all that was going on with her. She fell asleep and I waited for her. Not a long time ago, she fainted in the archive room and I had her in my room. She looked so pale and weak and looking at her I fell asleep in the chair. Early morning when I woke up. Skyler was awake trying to get up. I was not listening to her at all."No, Stay where you are."
"Fine." She mumbles rolling her eyes. She is in the hospital bed and yet she has the energy to roll her eyes at me.
"The doctor said you were having frequent chest pains and you weren't eating properly. Why did you hide it from me? I told you to take leave and rest. You were unwell the other day at the beach. You won't listen to me."
"Because I am Skyler I have taken a pledge to never listen to Shane. I will do the exact opposite of what Shane says." I mimic her and she laughs. I felt a smile form on my face to see her smiling.
"It's not that. I didn't want to worry you." She chuckles and I was relieved. I admired her for how strong she is. How she was smiling after everything that has been going on. I held her hand in between mine. "Promise me. YOU WILL NEVER HIDE ANYTHING FROM ME. WHATEVER IT IS."
She nods her head. "I PROMISE. Now, when can I go back home?"
"About that. YOU ARE MOVING IN WITH ME."
