Chapter 50 - Chapter 49: The Counter-Attack

The silence after Luther's disappearance was as heavy as the stones of the catacombs. Kimpa Vita, kneeling, stared at the ground, eyes filled with tears and heart shattered. The light that had enveloped Luther had faded, taking with it the man she loved. Alaric and Kael, equally frozen, knew there was no time for mourning. Damba had fled with the magical weapon, and Alokta's legions had already regrouped around them.

Alaric gently placed a hand on Kimpa's shoulder. "We have to go, now."

Kimpa stood up, her eyes still filled with pain, but now filled with resolve. She knew that Luther had sacrificed himself to give her a chance, to give them all a chance to save Mbanza. "Damba... he's going to use that weapon against our people. I can't let that happen."

Alaric nodded. "And we'll stop him."

Kael, weakened but determined, cast a tracking spell to follow the traces of magic left by Damba. "He's heading toward the northern fortress, where Mbanza's ancient protectors once guarded sacred relics. If he reaches the weapon, he'll have full control over the spirits of Mbanza's legendary warriors… incredibly powerful spirits that could enslave the entire city."

The group quickly set out. The streets of Mbanza, once thriving, were now deserted. Alokta's legions patrolled, and the few remaining residents hidden in the shadows watched the group pass by, powerless against the looming threat.

"He must have activated the weapon," Kael murmured, feeling the dark energy emanating from the fortress. "This magic... it's ancient, older than anything we've encountered so far."

Alaric, his senses heightened, could feel the presence of the ancient warriors' spirits. They were close. They were waiting. "We need to find a way to neutralize the weapon before Damba controls all of Mbanza."

As they approached the massive gates of the fortress, figures emerged from the shadows. Mbanza's legendary warriors, clad in their ancient armor, stood before them. But something was wrong. Their eyes glowed with an unnatural light, and their movements were mechanical, as if they were puppets being controlled by a higher power.

"They're under Damba's control," Kael said, horrified. "He's manipulating their minds…"

The first warrior, a former general known for his colossal strength, raised a massive sword crackling with energy. Alaric immediately readied himself, his instincts as a Sylvan Knight taking over. He knew they couldn't kill them. These warriors were the protectors of Mbanza, and even in their controlled state, they deserved respect.

"We need to neutralize them, not destroy them," Alaric whispered to Kimpa. She nodded, prepared to use her magic to disarm them without causing harm.

The battle erupted in a whirlwind of swords, spells, and violent blows. The legendary warriors were fast and powerful, mastering combat techniques that even Alaric had never seen. Every strike he landed seemed to barely shake their defenses. Kimpa summoned protective spirits to try to slow their attacks, but even these ancient spirits struggled against the dark magic controlling the warriors.

Alaric, forced to tap into his powers from the Ancients, felt a new strength surge within him. It was a force he had never felt before, almost too immense for his mortal body. He called upon the roots and trees around them, causing them to erupt from the ground and entangle the warriors. Thick vines ensnared them, temporarily immobilizing them.

"This won't hold for long," Kael shouted as he prepared a spell. But just then, one of the warriors, more agile than the others, lunged at Kael. Alaric, too far away, saw the attack coming but couldn't react in time.

The warrior struck Kael with such force that he was thrown against a stone wall. His body crashed heavily, and he collapsed to the ground, unconscious. The sound of the impact echoed through the air, leaving a heavy silence.

"Kael!" Alaric screamed, rushing toward his fallen friend.

Kimpa tried to intervene, casting a protective spell over Kael, but the warrior kept advancing, relentless.

As Alaric tried to protect Kael, something strange happened. Kael's body, limp on the ground, was suddenly surrounded by a magical aura. His eyes, which had been closed, snapped open, glowing with an intense light. He muttered words in an ancient language, one that neither Alaric nor Kimpa understood.

A wave of pure energy burst from Kael, knocking the legendary warriors back all at once. Slowly, he rose to his feet, still weakened, but his powers greatly enhanced. Kael had unlocked a new ability, an ancient magic he had never used before.

"I… I understand now," he whispered, turning to Alaric. "The Ancients… they've left traces in our minds. I can see beyond Damba's illusions. I can sense the magic controlling them."

With this new vision, Kael began dismantling the magical links that controlled the legendary warriors. One by one, they collapsed to the ground, freed from Damba's control. But each spell drained more and more of Kael's life force, leaving him increasingly weakened.

Despite their efforts, Damba had gained the time he needed. On the other side of the fortress, he was making his escape with the magical weapon. Alaric, sensing the danger, sprang to his feet.

"We have to stop him now," he said, his breath short, his muscles strained from the effort.

Kael, panting but determined, nodded. "I can still track him with my magic. But we need to hurry. If Damba fully activates this weapon, he'll control not just Mbanza, but the surrounding lands as well."

Kimpa, still reeling from Luther's loss, lifted her head, her face hardening with determination. "He won't escape. Not after everything he's done."

The group, weakened but resolute, set off in pursuit of Damba, ready for the final confrontation.
