Chapter 19 - A Deeper Connection

Zander stared at her, unsure what to do. He began to tap her head calmly, and Rhia moved further into his embrace, hugging him tightly. This made him still for a moment. Really, she was something special. Even when she was told she was going to get married, he didn't see her cry. She never made herself look weak in front of him, but now, just because of... this... she was vulnerable. He couldn't put himself together. He continued to caress her smooth, silky hair as he allowed her to cry. After waiting patiently, which suprised him.

She finally raised her head and stared at him, but it wasn't for long, as she quickly shifted her gaze to the other side. Her cheeks flushed with embarrassment.

"It's okay" Zander spoke, which shocked Rhia, forcing her to stare at him. Though his expression was unreadable, she was taken aback.Rhia shifted a bit, surprised to realize how close they were. Just as Zander was about to speak again, the butler arrived, gave a subtle signal, and bowed before leaving. Rhia, still lost in thought, didn't notice the exchange. 'Time to eat,' Zander spoke, breaking the silence.Zander walked to the dining room, followed by Rhia, and they both settled in amidst a spread of dishes enough for ten people. Rhia often wondered who ate the rest. She was caught off guard when Zander placed a chicken dish on her plate. 'Eat more,' he spoke casually, his eyes fixed on his own plate. Was it just her, or was Zander beginning to act differently? Or was she simply overthinking things?Rhia stared at the bunny, which she was still holding. People might think it strange that a twenty-year-old adult like her still clung to a bunny at her age, but only if they knew the real reason.Rhia's gaze fell upon the stuffed bunny in her hands, its soft fur and endearing expression transporting her back to a time when life was simpler. She remembered the day Snowflake, her real bunny, disappeared, the pain and sadness that lingered long after.

Though this bunny was just a stuffed toy, it still evoked memories of her beloved childhood pet. The fake bunny's glassy eyes seemed to sparkle with a familiar glint, reminding her of Snowflake's playful antics and cuddles.Zander noticed Rhia wasn't eating, her gaze fixed on the bunny. A flicker of disapproval crossed his face, and he felt a pang of regret for sending for the toy, not realizing it would captivate her attention so intensely. He gently raised her chin, his eyes locking onto hers. "Eat," he said in a low but firm tone. Rhia's gaze flickered to her phone as it pinged, a message from Lesley illuminating the screen. She read the text, a small smile playing on her lips as she learned about the plans for her upcoming birthday. Lesley had mentioned a more intimate celebration at her house apartment, a departure from the grand, extravagant parties of years past. Rhia's heart swelled with gratitude toward her friend, appreciating the thoughtful gesture.

With a gentle hum, Rhia set her phone aside, its screen darkening as she returned her focus to her meal. The flavors and textures of the food rekindled her appetite, and she ate silently, lost in thought. The soft clinking of utensils against plates and the occasional murmur from Zander were the only sounds accompanying her musings. Though her mind wandered, Rhia felt a sense of contentment wash over her, the warmth of the moment lingering like a gentle embrace. She knew she would talk to Lesley later, but for now, she simply savored the peace and quiet of the present.Zander's eyes narrowed slightly as he observed Rhia's gaze, her eyes and that smile when she looked at her phone some seconds ago. He recognized the faint furrow of her brow, a subtle sign of distraction. And in that moment, he knew that the source of her preoccupation was her best friend, whose name escaped him at the moment. After some time of quietness, Rhia decided to ask Zander, knowing she might not have the opportunity to ask him again. "The guy who came here, um, Zaden - is he your brother?" she asked curiously. Zander turned to her, his expression the same as always. "No," he spoke, "we are cousins." He finished. "Does that mean he simply likes calling you brother?" she asked. Zander nodded.Rhia's mouth formed a silent "O" of understanding before she stood up and headed upstairs, leaving Zander to his thoughts. He remained seated, his eyes fixed on the space where she had been, his mind whirling with questions.

He had stayed for dinner under the pretense of hunger, but in truth, he had wanted to spend more time with Rhia. Her presence drew him in, and he found himself craving her company more and more. This realization stirred up a mix of emotions within him, and he couldn't help but wonder why he was so drawn to her.

Zander's thoughts turned inward, and he began to question his own motivations and feelings. What was it about Rhia that captivated him so? Was it her kindness, her intelligence, or something else entirely? He couldn't quite put his finger on it, but he knew he needed to understand his own heart better.

As he sat there, lost in thought, Zander's gaze drifted upward, following the path Rhia had taken. He felt an overwhelming urge to follow her, to be near her, and to unravel the mystery of his own emotions. With a quiet sigh, he rose from his seat, his footsteps echoing softly as he made his way upstairs, drawn by the gentle pull of Rhia's presence.
