Chapter 1 - Good People Are Easily Oppressed

Charlie Avalon is a pure Indonesian by descent. His parents are also of Indonesian descent, with no Western lineage in their family tree.

The name was chosen simply because his father thought a Western name sounded cooler than an old-fashioned Indonesian name.

Born into a middle-class family, Charlie was raised without ever experiencing hunger. As a result, he could focus on his studies and excel in academics.

After graduating from high school, he applied to the Police Academy and qualified on his own merits without involving any money. It is common knowledge that most candidates who pass the Police Academy selection do so through corrupt means.

This could be through insider connections or bribing exam officials.

Many parents are willing to sell land and other valuable assets so their sons can become police officers. This is a common practice in Indonesia, and almost everyone is aware of it. Unfortunately, Charlie was one of the few who didn't know, as he was raised in a good environment.

Thanks to his hard work, surpassing anyone else, Charlie graduated as the top national graduate.

After that, he met the parents of his girlfriend and proposed to her.

Of course, the prospective in-laws were very pleased with his proposal to their daughter. After all, being a police officer is one of the most desirable careers for in-laws in Indonesia, alongside being a soldier or a civil servant.

Charlie married his beautiful girlfriend, Dinda, moved to the capital of Nusantara in Kalimantan, and carried out his duties as a member of Brimob (Mobile Brigade Corps).

Dealing with riots, terrorism, law enforcement, high-level crimes, disaster relief, and bomb disposal—Charlie performed his duties flawlessly.

Due to his outstanding achievements, he was promoted several times. Initially, he held the rank of Second Police Brigadier, but now he has risen to the rank of Police Commissioner.

His family and his wife's family saw Charlie as having a bright future ahead of him.

No matter how others viewed him, he had a perfect life that made others envious.

Perhaps the only downside was that he and Dinda had not been blessed with children after three years of marriage.

Fortunately, at the age of 26, Charlie learned that his wife was pregnant.

Of course, he held a thanksgiving event to welcome the arrival of their first child. He invited family and friends.

However, he was unaware of the disaster that was about to strike, as he was engulfed in the euphoria of happiness.

Charlie had offended too many people.

No matter who backed someone or what criminal organization was involved, Charlie would arrest them without hesitation.

In short, he was an idealist and believed that all crimes should be punished no matter what.

The son of an official involved in a murder, an online gambling syndicate owned by the son of the second former president and high-ranking officials, corrupt officials, foreign spies hidden in the government, drug dealers backed by police generals, etc.

Charlie resolved all major criminal cases.

He had touched the interests of many powerful people in Indonesia. In their eyes, there was no use for an ally of justice who couldn't be controlled.

As a result, Charlie was framed and dishonorably discharged for crimes he did not commit. With his authority gone, his enemies began to exact revenge on him.

One day, men dressed in black infiltrated his home, beat Charlie severely until he was near death. Not only that, they mercilessly killed Dinda, who was eight months pregnant, right in front of him. Then, they set his house on fire and left him to burn alive.

Charlie was saved by his former colleague, Iqbal, who came to visit. Even so, he suffered second-degree burns.

Filled with grief, anger, and hatred, he asked Iqbal to keep the fact that he was still alive a secret and began to hunt down the mastermind behind this tragedy after his recovery.

Although Charlie was no longer a Police Commissioner, he still had an intelligence network at his disposal. After six months of investigation, he discovered that those involved in this matter were not ordinary people.

Police generals, businessmen, and officials—none of them had simple identities. He had destroyed their dirty businesses in the past, causing them to hate him. In fact, he had once brought their names to court. Unfortunately, the judge dismissed his case with unreasonable excuses.

In Indonesia, good people are oppressed.

Money can buy the law—it's not just a metaphor in this country.

Charlie had lost his wife and unborn child. No longer caring about the weak and fragile justice against the powerful and wealthy, he began to plan his revenge.

One by one, those involved in his family's disaster, he exacted punishment on them that the law in this country could not.

In the past, Charlie was filled with a sense of justice and upheld the law, but now he had transformed into someone consumed by a thirst for revenge.

Of course, his actions provoked a fierce response from law enforcement in Indonesia. Because the ones being killed were high-ranking officials, they were so frightened that they mobilized Kopassus, a unit with a reputation even at the international level.

Unfortunately for the officials, Charlie had been a member of Kopassus for two years. He knew the ins and outs and capabilities of Kopassus.

Kopassus only slowed down his revenge, but it didn't stop him.

During this period, many Indonesians celebrated the deaths of corrupt officials. Unlike the high-ranking officials who considered Charlie a national threat, the public regarded him as an unsung hero.

Even the international media covered the killings of the officials. They even managed to investigate Charlie's identity and the reasons behind his actions.

When the news was published on social media and TV, people around the world mocked Indonesia's corrupt government.

There was no doubt that Charlie was a very competent and capable person—not only was he unappreciated, but he was also discarded like trash.

Public trust in the Indonesian government plummeted, protests erupted everywhere, demanding the death penalty for corrupt officials.

The scale of these protests was massive, reminiscent of those in 1998 to overthrow the New Order government.

❀❀❀

An empty house is surrounded by dozens of military vehicles, heavily armed troops pointing their weapons at the house.

"Charlie Avalon, you are surrounded. Surrender and face a military tribunal."

"Your actions have tarnished Indonesia's image in the eyes of the world. Other countries are now mocking Indonesia."

Kopassus Commander Raka Maharaja, holding a megaphone, tried to persuade his former subordinate.

They didn't dare storm the house—there were many homemade bombs and landmines around the house.

"Ha Ha Ha… You're saying something funny, Captain. If those corrupt officials never existed, would Indonesia become a joke? They are the ones who have ruined Indonesia like parasites for their own greed and profit. You know I eradicated their dirty business, which made them hold a grudge against me."

Hearing Charlie's mad laughter, all the Kopassus members present couldn't refute his words. In their hearts, they actually appreciated his actions, but they didn't say so.

"Sigh… If you still consider me, Captain, stop this chaos. You've already avenged those involved in your family's murder, right? Stop here."

Feeling sympathy for Charlie's heartbreaking experience, Raka softened his voice.

"Sorry, Captain. I can't go back anymore. As you said, I've already killed those bastards with my own hands. It's all over."

The door opened, and Charlie walked out holding a gun in his hand.

Seeing this scene, everyone pointed their guns at him.

"Captain, Junaidi, Dimas, Aldi, Raihan, Bagas, Andi, Agus…"

Charlie called out the names of his fellow Kopassus members who were present.

In the past, they fought together to protect the nation's sovereignty from foreign enemies. But now, they were meeting as enemies.

"Everyone, I, Charlie Avalon, feel fortunate to have been friends with you all. Live well, don't fall like me, okay?"

Pointing the gun to his head, Charlie showed a relieved smile as if all his burdens had been lifted.

"Charlie, stop!"

Raka's eyes widened at this scene. Not only him, but all the Kopassus members who had once been Charlie's comrades, their hearts pounded, and words stuck in their throats.

"Dinda, I'm coming to you. Let's reunite in the afterlife."

Ignoring everyone's shouts, Charlie pulled the trigger without hesitation.

*BANG*

The hot lead pierced through his brain, instantly taking his life. In that moment, Charlie saw nothing but endless darkness.
