The house was quiet, save for the occasional creak of the old wooden floors and the faint hum of the wind outside. I sat on the edge of the bed, watching Liz sleep peacefully, her breathing even and calm. My own thoughts were anything but. Her words lingered in my mind, weaving into the heavy knot of everything I hadn't yet untangled.

The idea had been circling in my mind ever since she said it, too big and too strange to make sense of it. But every time I pushed it away, it crept back, insistent and nagging. Just like the guilt that had been growing with every nice gesture Mark had made since the fight.
