Chapter 179 - The Echoes of Aftermath

The smoke and debris began to settle, the air slowly clearing from the chaotic remnants of Joseph's devastating attack. The once vibrant forest now lay in ruins—a barren wasteland of scorched earth, splintered trees, and ash swirling in the wind. Joseph stood amidst the desolation, a figure of eerie calm, his eyes scanning the scene with a strange mixture of satisfaction and contemplation.

He exhaled, the glow around his body fading, his breath visible in the cooling air. "Well," he said to himself, cracking his neck as if he were simply stretching after a workout, "that was a bit more intense than I anticipated."

Joseph brushed a few stray leaves from his tight-fitting black shirt, his eyes turning upward toward the sky. "Gero really thought he could handle the Void, huh?" he muttered, his tone almost amused. "Amateur."

He took a step forward, his martial arts slippers crunching on the charred ground beneath him. The silence was deafening, broken only by the faint crackling of embers still burning among the ruins. He couldn't help but chuckle to himself, feeling a strange exhilaration running through his veins. "And they say I'm the reckless one," he murmured, smirking.

Joseph began to walk, feeling the weight of the destruction all around him. He knew he had to move quickly; the academy would not be pleased with the news of Gero's demise, and they would certainly come looking for him soon. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small, battered notebook. He flipped through its pages, filled with messy scrawls, half-baked ideas, and strange diagrams. His fingers stopped at a page titled, "The Next Move."

Joseph squinted at the page. "So… where to next?" he whispered to himself, tapping his chin with a finger. "The academy? No… too obvious. Maybe I should find Kai? He might have some idea of what's happening."

He closed the notebook, stuffing it back into his pocket, and looked around. His eyes caught sight of a small, faint trail of smoke in the distance—like a tiny thread against the darkening sky. Curiosity piqued, he began walking toward it, his footsteps light and almost casual, despite the weight of what had just occurred.

As he approached, he saw the outline of a figure sitting amidst the rubble of a destroyed tree, back turned to him. The figure seemed small, hunched over, and Joseph's sharp eyes quickly caught the slight movement—a hand shaking, lifting something to their lips.

He grinned, his usual playful demeanor returning. "Well, well, what have we here?" he called out, his voice light but carrying through the empty air. "A survivor? Or perhaps a fan?"

The figure flinched and turned quickly, revealing a young woman, her face smudged with ash, her eyes wide and frightened. She held a flask in one trembling hand, clutching it tightly as if it were her only lifeline.

Joseph's grin softened into a more approachable smile. "Hey, easy there," he said, raising his hands in a gesture of peace. "I'm not here to hurt you… well, unless you're with Gero's lot, in which case I can't make any promises."

The woman swallowed hard, her voice shaky. "I… I'm not with anyone," she stammered. "I was just… I got lost. I heard the explosion… and…" She trailed off, her gaze darting nervously around the ruined landscape.

Joseph nodded sympathetically. "Ah, I see. Wrong place, wrong time, huh?" He moved closer, still keeping his hands up, his tone gentle. "What's your name?"

She hesitated for a moment before answering, "Elena… Elena Shimizu."

Joseph smiled warmly. "Nice to meet you, Elena. Sorry about the… uh, mess." He gestured vaguely at the destroyed forest around them. "I was having a bit of a disagreement with a friend. Things got a little… out of hand."

Elena's eyes narrowed slightly. "A disagreement?" she repeated, her voice tinged with disbelief. "You… you destroyed all of this in a disagreement?"

Joseph shrugged nonchalantly. "Well, when you put it that way, it sounds a lot worse than it is." He paused, then added, "Okay, maybe it was pretty bad. But hey, it's not like I wanted to blow up the forest. It just… happened."

Elena shook her head, still clutching her flask tightly. "Are you… are you some kind of monster?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Joseph's smile faded slightly, and his eyes grew serious. "A monster? No… not really," he said softly. "I just have a unique set of skills… and a bit of a temper, I suppose." He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Look, I didn't mean to scare you, okay? I'm just trying to figure things out, same as everyone else."

There was a moment of silence as Elena considered his words. Finally, she nodded slowly, seeming to relax just a bit. "Okay… I believe you," she said quietly. "But… what are you going to do now?"

Joseph chuckled, his grin returning. "Good question, Elena. I was just wondering that myself." He looked around again, scanning the horizon. "I think I need to find Kai. He's got a lot of explaining to do, and I have a feeling he's in deep trouble—again."

Elena frowned, confused. "Kai? Who's Kai?"

Joseph's smile grew broader. "Oh, he's a friend of mine… sort of. Well, a friend, a rival, a pain in the neck—depends on the day, really. But I think he might have some answers about what's going on."

Elena hesitated, then nodded. "I… I think I heard that name before. Someone mentioned it at the academy, before…" Her voice trailed off as she looked around at the ruins.

Joseph's expression turned more serious. "The academy, huh? You wouldn't happen to know if anyone from there survived?"

Elena's face darkened, her eyes lowering. "I… I don't know. I ran as soon as I heard the explosion. I didn't look back…"

Joseph sighed. "That sounds about right." He turned his head, gazing back toward where he felt the academy once stood. "Guess I better find out for myself."

He turned back to Elena. "You coming, or are you staying here?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. "Because between you and me, it might not be safe to hang around much longer."

Elena seemed to consider his words carefully, then nodded. "I'll come with you," she said, a hint of determination in her voice. "I don't know where else to go."

Joseph grinned. "That's the spirit!" He gestured for her to follow. "Let's see where this road leads, shall we?"

As they began walking, Joseph felt the familiar pull of anticipation in his chest. He had no idea what lay ahead, but for the first time in a while, he felt genuinely excited. Something big was happening, something that went beyond the Void or Gero or even the academy.

And Joseph intended to find out exactly what it was.

Somewhere in the distance, the echoes of past battles faded, and a new journey began.
