Chapter 92 - Shadows of Escape

### **Chapter 60: Shadows of Escape**

Kai leaned back against the cold stone wall, trying to process the weight of what Reina had just told him. He couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. She had been locked in this prison for longer than he could imagine, yet she still carried herself with a sense of purpose, a glimmer of hope that had somehow survived the crushing despair of imprisonment. But why him? Why now? And most importantly, could he trust her?

His mind raced as he looked at her, trying to read between the lines of her carefully chosen words. Reina remained seated across from him, her expression calm, almost relaxed, as if she were entirely in control of the situation. But Kai knew better—there was always more going on beneath the surface, especially in a place like this.

Reina shifted slightly, her eyes flicking over to Kai. "You're quiet," she remarked, her voice low but clear. "Thinking about the plan?"

Kai nodded, still deep in thought. "Yeah," he said, though there was more on his mind than just their escape. "You seem confident this will work. What makes you so sure?"

Reina smiled softly, her gaze steady as she met his eyes. "I've been here long enough to know the guards' patterns, the weaknesses in their patrols. I've studied the layout of this place. It's not impenetrable—just highly guarded. Most people don't make it out because they try to brute force their way through. But that's not what we're going to do."

Kai raised an eyebrow. "So, what's different about your plan?"

Reina leaned forward slightly, her voice dropping to a near whisper. "We're going to use misdirection. Cause chaos where it'll hurt them the most, then slip out during the confusion. We'll need to act fast and stay low—if we're spotted, we're done. But I've seen cracks in their system. If we play our cards right, we can make it to the surface."

Kai's brow furrowed as he considered her words. It wasn't that he doubted her—she seemed capable enough—but he needed to know exactly what he was getting into. "What kind of chaos are you talking about?" he asked cautiously.

Reina's smile widened slightly, her eyes gleaming with a hint of mischief. "There's a group of prisoners on the other side of the facility," she explained. "They're… not exactly cooperative, but they've got strength in numbers. If we can rile them up, get them to riot, it'll draw the guards away from our section. That'll give us the opening we need to make our move."

Kai nodded slowly, understanding her logic but feeling a pang of unease. "And what happens to them?" he asked, his voice hardening slightly. "Those prisoners you're planning to use as a distraction?"

Reina shrugged lightly, her expression indifferent. "They'll do what they do best—fight. The guards will deal with them, not us. It's not ideal, but it's the only way we'll have enough time to escape."

Kai frowned. He wasn't a fan of the idea of using others as bait, but he understood the necessity. This was survival, and in this place, survival often meant making hard choices.

Reina must have noticed the shift in his demeanor, because she softened her tone. "I'm not saying we leave them to die," she said quietly. "But you need to understand something, Kai. This isn't the outside world. There are no heroes here. Everyone's just trying to survive, and sometimes that means making sacrifices."

Kai clenched his jaw, thinking of his brother, thinking of everything that had led him to this point. He knew Reina was right—this wasn't the time for moral high ground. If he wanted to save his brother, he had to be willing to do whatever it took.

He sighed, his resolve hardening. "Alright," he said finally. "I'm in. What do we do next?"

Reina's smile returned, but this time it was one of approval. "Good," she said, her voice laced with satisfaction. "First, we need to get out of these cells. I've been watching the guard rotation for weeks now. In about ten minutes, there will be a shift change—a small window where the corridor outside will be unguarded for just a few minutes. That's when we make our move."

Kai's eyes narrowed in focus. "And how do we get out of the cells?"

Reina grinned, pulling a small, metallic object from beneath the hem of her tattered sleeve. "I've been holding onto this for a while," she said, showing him the thin, hand-crafted lockpick. "It's crude, but it works. I've already managed to unlock my own shackles. I'll do the same for you, and then we'll take care of the cell door."

Kai watched her carefully as she moved with practiced precision, quickly and quietly freeing herself from her shackles. She then slid over to his side of the cell, her movements smooth and silent. Within seconds, she had unlocked the chains that bound his wrists.

Kai flexed his hands, feeling the relief of having the heavy shackles removed. He rubbed his wrists, the skin red and raw from the iron cuffs, but he forced the discomfort to the back of his mind.

"Alright," Reina whispered as she crouched by the cell door, her fingers working quickly on the lock. "Keep an eye out. We have to be ready to move the moment this door opens."

Kai stood up slowly, his muscles still sore but ready. He stepped to the side, glancing out through the small barred window of the cell. The corridor was dimly lit, with only a few torches along the walls casting long shadows down the narrow hall. He could hear the faint echo of footsteps in the distance, but the guards seemed to be moving away, just as Reina had predicted.

After a few tense moments, Kai heard a soft click, and the cell door creaked open. Reina stood up, flashing him a quick smile as she pushed the door open just enough for them to slip through.

"Stay close," she whispered as she stepped out into the corridor. "We move fast, but quiet. Follow my lead."

Kai nodded, his senses heightened as he followed her out of the cell. The stone beneath his feet was cold and uneven, and every sound seemed amplified in the silence. He moved with careful precision, keeping close to the walls as they made their way down the hall.

Reina led him with confidence, her movements smooth and calculated. She paused at every corner, glancing around carefully before signaling for him to follow. The tension in the air was thick, but Reina's steady presence helped keep Kai focused.

As they reached the end of the corridor, Reina held up a hand, signaling for Kai to stop. She pressed her back against the wall, peering around the corner before pulling back quickly.

"There's a guard stationed just ahead," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "We'll have to take him out quietly. Can you handle that?"

Kai nodded, his expression grim. "I've got it."

Reina gave him a brief nod of approval before stepping aside, allowing him to take the lead. Kai crept forward, his movements slow and deliberate as he approached the corner. He peeked around, spotting the guard standing with his back to them, his focus seemingly on something in the distance.

Kai felt his energy surge, the familiar warmth spreading through his body as he prepared to strike. He focused on controlling the flow of power, keeping it low and contained so as not to alert anyone else nearby.

With a swift motion, Kai stepped out from behind the corner and closed the distance between himself and the guard. Before the guard could react, Kai struck him with a precise blow to the back of the neck, his energy-enhanced strike knocking the man out cold. The guard crumpled to the ground without a sound.

Reina stepped forward quickly, her eyes scanning the area for any signs of danger. When she was satisfied that they were still in the clear, she nodded to Kai. "Nicely done," she whispered.

Kai bent down, grabbing the guard's keys and handing them to Reina. "We need to keep moving," he said quietly. "How much farther until we reach the surface?"

Reina pocketed the keys and motioned for him to follow. "Not much farther," she replied, her voice tense with anticipation. "But the hardest part is still ahead. There's a checkpoint at the top of this corridor—guards posted at the exit. That's where we'll need to cause the distraction."

Kai felt his pulse quicken, the weight of the upcoming challenge pressing down on him. But he knew there was no turning back now. He had to get out of here—he had to save his brother.

As they crept farther down the corridor, the faint sound of commotion reached their ears. Shouts, the clanging of metal, and the unmistakable sound of a riot brewing.

Reina glanced at Kai, a small smirk on her lips. "Looks like our distraction has already started," she whispered.

Kai nodded, feeling a surge of determination as they moved forward. The chaos ahead would give them the cover they needed to make their escape—but it would also make things infinitely more dangerous.

"Stay sharp," Reina said quietly, her eyes gleaming with a mix of excitement and focus. "This is where things get tricky."

Kai clenched his fists, his energy swirling beneath the surface as he prepared for what was to come. The exit was within reach, but the final challenge lay just ahead.

And Kai was ready to face it head-on.
