Chapter 28 - TWENTY SEVEN: FLAMES AND CHAOS

The atmosphere at 6:49 pm on the Sage bridge leading into Avery city was alive with the hum of traffic and the hustle and bustle of people heading home from work. The setting sun cast a warm orange glow over the concrete and steel, casting long shadows across the road. The air was filled with the sounds of cars honking, engines revving, and the distant wail of sirens.

The bridge was a hub of activity, with vehicles zipping by and pedestrians walking along the sidewalk. The atmosphere was lively and energetic, with a sense of excitement and anticipation as people headed into the city for the evening. The sky above was a deep shade of blue, with the city skyline visible in the distance, its buildings and skyscrapers gleaming in the fading light.

Despite the chaos and noise of the bridge, there was a sense of comfort and familiarity in the air, as people went about their daily routines.

Fifteen-year-old Jared Wilkins sat at the back seat of his sister's truck with his four-year-old nephew Tommy, who kept looking out the window, staring at the sky. They were returning to Avery after spending a weekend with Jared and Eloise's parents in Jasonville.

"Mom, look, a meteor!" Tommy yells in excitement, making Jared roll his eyes without taking his attention away from his phone game.

Ellie looks back and smiles at Tommy. Since Ricky Hart, her husband, had taken Tommy to see a meteor shower the previous year, the boy now constantly looked for them in the sky.

Ellie smiled and followed his gaze. "Wow, that's a big one!" she said, playing along. "Make a wish, Tommy!"

Tommy's eyes sparkled as he closed his eyes and made a wish. "I wished for a new bike!" he said, opening his eyes again.

Ellie chuckled. "Well, maybe your wish will come true soon!"

Tommy's face lit up even more. "Really? You think so?"

Ellie nodded. "Stranger things have happened, right?"

Tommy grinned, his eyes still fixed on the sky. "I love meteors, Mom. They're so cool!"

"Yes they are hon... What the hell? She says as a sudden explosion hits the Sage bridge, just a few meters from where Ellie's truck had been. Ellie screams as flames consume the bridge. The engine dies, and she struggles to start it again.

"Shit," Ellie swears, discovering she'd run out of gas.

Dragging herself out of the vehicle, she rushes to the back seat and pulls her son and brother out with a strength she didn't know she possessed.

Chaos erupts as vehicles crash and people scream, trying to escape the inferno. The part of the Sage bridge that connected Jasonville and Avery City suddenly collapsed, plummeting into the river below. People and vehicles fell into the churning green water, chaos erupting as they struggled to stay afloat amidst the debris.

Jared runs fast as the flames consumed everything next to him, from the corner of his eyes he sees his sister with his nephew in her arms, he watches as the flames almost cover her, abandoning his safety he rushes into the flame and covers his sister with his body. "No!!!" He screams, closing his eyes as he felt the flame consume him. Opening his eyes, he was surprised to see himself, five hundred meters from the destroyed bridge, with his sister and nephew laying unharmed on the ground.

Jared rushes to Ellie, placing his head on her chest, he heard her heart beating on a steady rhythm. The kids too. "You okay, kid?" A red-haired woman who stood next to a blonde asks, startling him. Jared touches his body frantically, surprised to see no damages. "How...how..." He stutters, surprised. "Hey, Uriel, we already saved these humans, no need to stay here, alright?" Said the blonde one who Jared thinks kind of familiar.

Alright, Cas, I'm coming, jeez," Uriel says, then, before his very eyes, both Castiel and Red haired disappear, leaving him stunned. "Oh my God," Jared whispers, as he comes to a conclusion that they had been saved by actual angels.
