A tense silence settled between us after my confession. My mother's gaze held a mixture of curiosity and a hint of judgment.
"So, why this feeling?" she finally asked, her voice calm but firm. "Why the suspicion that the baby isn't yours?"
Shame burned in my gut. It wasn't something I readily admitted, even to myself. "I've always… suspected Karen of infidelity," I mumbled, the words heavy on my tongue. "Back in London, she seemed to gravitate towards other men, forming these overly friendly relationships."
"Did you ever see anything concrete?" she pressed, leaning closer. "Catch her in the act, so to speak?"
I shook my head. "No," I admitted. "Not really. There's never been anything definitive. But today, in my office…" My voice trailed off, the scene replaying vividly in my mind. "She practically undressed a security guard right in front of me!"
