By the time I woke up again it was now nighttime, candles were positioned around the room as well as a chandelier illuminating the center of the room. I sat back up, resting my back on the pillow and the wall behind me. At least it seemed like my body was holding up better then previously. I looked around the room again, now that my mind wasn't cloudy anymore, I could really take in my surrounding. There wasn't much in the room surprisingly, there was my bed, probably king sized, there was a balcony opening and a few tables with sofas on each side. The colours followed a light blue colour that resembled the sky on a sunny day, because of this, although it was dark outside the room seemed to be radiating of light. Apart from that there wasn't anything of note, a table to my side with some fruits that I could only assume were left by the two people from earlier. The fruits that were left on the platter were fruits I was familiar with, bananas, strawberries and an apple, I simply concluded that I was probably still on earth just in the past somehow.
Well, it wasn't the time to worry about that, I clearly had some bigger worries in front of me, like who was I? I stood up and walked towards the mirror I saw earlier in the corner of the room, I had to at the very least know how I looked before I could do anything.
While looking in the mirror there was a man with an out of shape body. Not nearly close enough to be called fat, but enough to tell he didn't exercise very often. He had long white hair and had purple-coloured eyes. His face showed signs of fatigue, dark bags of skin under his eyes indicating that he had needed much more sleep and rest. Apart from that nothing stood out too much, he wore pyjamas that were probably made of cotton and were in checkered pattern of black and white.
I touched my skin; it was quite soft something I didn't think id ever feel again. Well, there were too many things that surprised me while looking at myself. First of all, the hair, although it wasn't impossible to have white hair like when I was alive it still required bleaching the hair, something I didn't think they had in this time period. The other things that caught my eye, although in hindsight it was a bit sad, was the amount of weight I had. It had been so long since I had seen someone be able to eat to their fill, let alone be a bit fat.
It was a weird feeling, after having a nightmarish end of life, starving every day for practically a whole year, surviving on small quantities of food everyday and now I could clearly eat to my fill. But I couldn't dismiss how I felt earlier when waking up the first time and how I looked. Clearly whoever's body I was possessing didn't have the easiest life either, so I shouldn't take things for granted.
I looked around and tried to find something relating to whoever I was, Joel I think was what they said earlier if my memory served correctly. If I could find a diary or some notes he left behind I could maybe figure out who I was and perhaps how I had even come to possess his body.
I tried looking around but there wasn't much, it didn't even seem like I had a closet in this room nor any table or something of the sort to keep things stored. I guess my only option if I met someone now was to say I had memory loss. Logically looking at it, it was the most reasonable thing to do, it would cover for all the inconsistencies I didn't know. On top of that people would be more willing to give me information that maybe would have been common knowledge to them. Especially if I did indeed turn out to be a noble, although I had attended parties with rich people in my past life, I couldn't say I knew etiquette and other general stuff from the day and age I was currently in.
I turned my attention to the last place I hadn't gone to yet, the balcony. Two glass doors stood in front of the balcony, they were a bit dirty but nothing really of note, simply some dust. I opened the doors and walked out, a hot breeze attached me immediately, seemed like I was in a warm environment. Although I couldn't really see much of the greenery, I had seen last time because it was dark, I could see the building in which I resided in. A large white manor, illuminated from head to toe in lights. They seemed to be burning with copper because the fire was green. I looked at it a bit incredulity, how had they managed that, it didn't even seem like they were using a lightbulb or anything special, just a torch. On top of that it wasn't exploding or going away which seemed to go against the characteristics of copper which was a highly flammable ingredient. I looked at it for a bit, racking my brain as to how they had managed it but I never found something conclusive, maybe it was a different material or something else entirely that I simply didn't know. I put my attention elsewhere in the meantime, looking at the sky and its stars. Today the sky was clear unlike when I had dies in the snowstorm. Thousand of shining lights could be seen in the sky, shining radiantly. Not paying much attention I looked for a while, it had been so long since I could enjoy the sky with such a carefree expression. Without a feeling of guilt, knowing that I had murdered my entire species and thousands of others that cohabited with us, this time I hadn't done anything, the world was free and at peace. I kept looking for a good few minutes, enjoying the peace I felt after so long.
While looking something did catch my eye and I started laughing.
- Bahahah, theirs no way… I memorized them all. How come... how come I don't recognise a single constellation? Even if we were in the south pole, I should still know them. Are... are we not on earth?
A bit shaken I kept looking at the sky, but my brain quickly reasoned it out. Although it was probably a bit obvious, the sky simply didn't look the same depending on the time in history you looked at it. Depending on the position of the earth relative to the stars in the universe, the sky could have changed a decent amount. I concluded that I would eventually need to make some quick calculations to make sure of my hypothesis, but it would take me some time to make sure I remember all the correct data from my past life. No matter how much one is a genius, it would still take time to not make a mistake with something like this.
I stayed a while longer, looking at the shadows of the plants that could be seen thanks to the lights, there seemed to be a big garden outside of the manor. I couldn't tell what plants and flowers grew there but it did seem quite nice, I should probably visit it once it is light outside.
To the corner of my eyes something caught my eye, there was a shadow of a person behind one of the buildings, seemed like there was someone there, but I wasn't in a rush to call them over, I had to internalized what was happening still, I wasn't ready to talk to strangers yet, let alone whatever would happen after I tell them I forgot everything.
Of course, with my luck I didn't have the chance, behind me I could hear the room to my bedroom being opened quietly. Coming outside of the room was the maid from earlier, walking quietly, probably not to wake me up she entered with a trolly that you would see in a kitchen. She looked around quickly, her surprise could clearly be seen, I guess she didn't expect me to be out of bed. I let out a small chuckle seeing her reaction and her hait turned to me as soon as she heard it.
- Young master… are… how are you feeling… how did you get up?
The girl seemed to almost be in tears while looking at me, seemed like I had to put my plan in motion a bit earlier then expected. I looked at her with a sad smile and my eyes closed.
I'm feeling pretty well physically, but my mind is still s bit of a mess honestly.
She looked at me incredulously, she seemed to be even more stunned compared to before, I looked at her face a bit more, trying to see if I could tell anything more from her reaction but no nothing. It was a bit awkward; I was waiting for her to say something, I couldn't lead the conversation because I had no clue what was happening. Luckly, she seemed to realize that the awkward atmosphere was because of her, and she talked again.
- Young master please come inside, its warm outside, you need to stay in your bed until you're fully healthy again. Il go get madame and il come back immediately I promise so please stay safe and don't stay outside!
Here I was, left alone again as she ran out, this time not even bothering to close the door. I guess it was time to resign to my fate and whatever would happen to me next, so I went back to sit on my bed with a long sigh.
