Chapter 1 - wedge

"Why do you have to go study in the UK? I really can't understand what you're thinking."

"You're only sixteen, your language skills still need improvement. Why rush to go abroad for studies?""Yeah! Being alone abroad is not as comfortable as being at home where someone takes care of you. You're being too willful.""The tuition at English private schools is shockingly high; don't think you can act recklessly just because everyone spoils you."In the waiting area of the Zhongzheng International Airport, a group of young men and women in their twenties surrounded a delicate and beautiful girl, their faces showing both reluctance and envy. The girl with a Minnie Mouse backpack shifted her feet impatiently, glancing at the changing flight codes on the display, waiting for her flight to board. She was the envy of her cousins, seen as a precious daughter by many, even though she had lost her parents at a young age. However, she had a doting grandfather and a wealthy fiancé, who was about ten years older than her, willing to give her everything.Today, she was leaving because of his betrayal. He loved her, having been infatuated with her since she was an infant, but he made a mistake that many men easily make—he slept with another woman.Such a mistake could have been forgiven. After all, her body had only just developed into that of a young woman, and a twenty-six-year-old man has sexual needs. It was too inhumane to expect him to remain celibate until she was mature enough to meet his desires, and she never demanded he stay chaste. What should never have happened was that he chose the wrong woman."Child, when you get to England, be sure to write back often so that the old man doesn't worry."With tears in her eyes, the housekeeper straightened her collar."Mm!""Don't skimp on phone calls; your future husband is very wealthy, so feel free to spend his money."The girl's tutor forced a smile while gently stroking her face, which was like a daughter to her."No matter what you're throwing a tantrum over, home will always be your safe haven. Your grandfather asked me to send you off."The caretaker's voice carried a hint of reluctance, and a touch of bitterness flashed in the girl's eyes. These employees who had watched her grow up cared more about her than her own family; they genuinely didn't want her to suffer overseas. She knew that the adoration she received had attracted many envious looks, with everyone wishing they could trade places with her to enjoy the double pampering from her powerful grandfather and handsome fiancé.Leaving hurt her heart.Staying would break it.When she tried to spend some time alone with the man she loved before her sixteenth birthday, she opened the door and saw her world collapse. The entangled naked couple did not notice her arrival, like a silent wind brushing past the sheer curtain, stirring up feelings unnoticed; only the sounds of soft moans and heavy breaths echoed around. No one knew why she canceled her sixteenth birthday party, nor why she avoided seeing her fiancé and refused to let him in.Even less did they understand why her aunt and uncle suddenly quarreled over divorce; she alone knew the reason. That night, the woman lying in his bed was her trusted aunt. And she did something vengeful—she called her aunt's husband to catch them in the act; notified the police about a supposed murder; contacted the media about a major corruption case involving officials and businessmen, bringing a crowd crashing into the scene where the two were in the bathroom together. She stood across the street, coldly observing the "retribution," a smile on her face mixed with tears, as the twelfth bell rang in the church, delivering her first birthday gift at sixteen—it was growth."The announcement has been made. Are you sure you want to go?"The crowd of farewell givers did not include him because she hadn't informed him; she insisted on leaving gracefully, her stubbornness as firm as stone.Without a second thought, she walked towards the boarding gate, not leaving a word of goodbye, not even looking back, afraid she wouldn't be able to leave if she did.As the plane slowly ascended into the sky, a new Mercedes-Benz dashed through the airport controls, ignoring barriers, sirens blaring, as a handsome man rushed toward the tail of the plane, howling like a madman. He couldn't believe he had been abandoned. At least, that's how he felt; he should have been the closest person to her. But—She said nothing.
