Chapter 7 - On The Art Of Becoming A Ruler 3

Learn Patience

They say the early bird gets the worm, but remember—the second mouse gets the cheese.

In the world of power, brute force will only get you so far. Just like the crocodile lurking silently at the watering hole, you must learn to bide your time. Every successful dictator possesses not only grit but also an abundance of patience. The key is to train yourself to recognize the perfect moments to strike.

Take Adolf Hitler, for example. He could have easily bumped off President Hindenburg sooner if he wanted to. But Hitler understood that acting rashly might jeopardize his final steps to absolute rule. Instead, he resisted the immediate gratification of seizing power through a coup, knowing that it could backfire spectacularly.

Instead, Hitler focused on making incremental yet significant moves, waiting for the timing to be just right. When the Reichstag fire created a wave of panic, he seized the moment to push through a decree curtailing individual rights and liberties—all in the name of national security. This made it easier for him to eliminate opponents, which in turn made it simpler to pass further legislation that granted the government even more power.

And so on, and so on.

All that remained was to wait for Hindenburg to kick the bucket, so Hitler could unify his powers as Chancellor and President, becoming the Führer. Imagine it—the transition from elected official to bona fide dictator took just over a year, and all it required was patience.

So remember, don't rush. Be like the crocodile. Lurk, wait, and when the time is right—strike.
