Fiona's POV

The morning light filtered through the curtains, pale and uninviting. I hadn't slept, but exhaustion was a luxury we couldn't afford now. Maia's lifeless face haunted me, her innocent eyes still pleading for help we couldn't give.

Sebastian stood at the edge of the bed, adjusting his shirt with mechanical precision. His movements were rigid, a telltale sign of the turmoil he was trying to suppress.

"Leo will start questioning the patrols," he said, his voice low, almost detached. "Marcus has assigned a smaller team to keep tabs on everyone inside the packhouse."

"And you?" I asked, folding my arms as I turned to face him. "What will you be doing?"

His eyes softened, but only briefly. "I'll do whatever it takes to keep you and the pack safe."

"Don't give me the leader's response, Sebastian," I snapped, the edge in my voice surprising even me. "Tell me what's going through your head. You haven't spoken about Maia since last night."
