Chapter 247 - Runic Spell Casting (3).

"Now that you understand what magic actually is, I want to teach you how to make perfect use of this knowledge."

Loki gulped audibly as he paid attention to Nicholas's next words.

"Runic Spellcasting is a secret art. The very art that was used to create the special method of magic that everyone can use today. So Runic Spell Casting is a more bare-bones version of what you already know." Nicholas spoke with great reverence.

"No one knows who made the system, not even me, but I've been handed the manual on how to use it to the best of my abilities."

'Handed a manual? He doesn't know Rowena made it? Who gave him the manual then? Did someone steal from Rowena's lab when she was making it?'

"The system of Runic Spellcasting is rather simple, it uses knowledge about mysticism that corresponds to the respective Gods and Goddesses to overpower the spell with 'Their' spirituality."

"Huh…isn't that risky though? Wouldn't that depend on the mood of the Gods and Goddesses? Why should they empower the spell in the first place?" Loki asked with a frown.

"Good question. I will answer that in a bit. You know that the closer you are to becoming a True God of your pathway, the closer to a representation of it you become, right?"

"Are you talking about the Mythical Creature form that Beyonders get once they become a Demigod?" Loki asked

"Yes. Precisely and by the end of the pathway, you become fully amalgamated with it. But that's not all. You also become the true owner of the symbol of the pathway." Nicholas explained patiently, he paused slightly to see if Loki was following and once he saw Loki nod, he continued.

"So when you want to gather the help of a True God, the trick is to use the appropriate symbol in your spell completely to get a True God to manifest their spirituality along with the spell."

"But-"

"I know, you want to ask about the True Gods retracting support from your spell don't you?"

Loki nodded.

"The answer is simple, as simple as Runic Spell Casting. You just give the True Gods a reason not to ignore you."

Loki remained silent for a while as he contemplated the method Nicholas had explained before he asked a simple question.

"But what are the advantages of such spell casting other than making your spells a little more powerful? I mean you can achieve the same with the help of a few rituals beforehand right? You wouldn't need to take the risk of suddenly being rejected."

Nicholas nodded and snapped his fingers before he responded, "There are several advantages. The first one is that you can replicate the abilities of a completely different pathway."

'Huh?'

'Ah! This is why all this seemed so familiar! I already do this with Occlumency. I use the 'Concealment Rune' the symbol of the Darkness Pathway to conceal my Body of Heart and Mind.'

"Of course, there are many other things to consider while using Runic Spell Casting, like arranging the runes created out of your spirituality in such a way that it can withstand the flow of excess spirituality into your spell, otherwise it will backfire rather spectacularly."

"There are other considerations to know too, for example, you have to take plenty of precautions and add guards into the spell so that whichever deity you are taking help from won't end up taking advantage of you and so on."

"It is a double-edged sword, but one that can augment and bring out the true power of spells that people use in their daily lives."

Breaking out of his short shock, Loki asked.

"How come no one has learnt about this method already?"

'Given how I used the Concealment Rune to hide my thoughts, it shouldn't be that rare for a different Beyonder to have attempted to use the symbol of his or her Gods and Goddesses.'

"That is not hard to explain. In fact, it is the first rule of mysticism." Nicholas said and without pause continued, "You may not directly look at a God. This is why this method has never been explored because it would be immensely risky, to even try."

"If someone ever tried to do this without the consent of the God, they'd most likely lose their lives because of the wrath of the God. And then there is the reason that True Gods aren't keen on letting someone use this knowledge to empower their spells.-"

"-Why should they have to be constantly annoyed by people making the symbols of their pathways and disturbing them? You'd probably only face their wrath in return if you did such a thing meaninglessly."

"In fact, the method of normal spell casting has several counterguards that aim to prevent exactly this so that everyone can use the spells freely."

'Then why does nothing happen to me when I use the Concealment Rune to protect my mind?' Loki wondered. 'Oh? Perhaps Salazar is actually pulling his weight for once and helping me without asking me for anything in return since I'm Mr. Error's blessed?'

"How did the person who taught you figure out about Runic Spell Casting in the first place? You said it isn't possible to experiment with it-"

'Shouldn't the founders know him if he stole the knowledge of magic from Rowena?'

'So Mr. Error?'

"It is a method born out of the madness of the thousands of previous generations who paid attention to the noises of the beyond and deciphered them." Nicholas said with a deadpan face and Loki immediately understood he was bullshitting.

'I guess he doesn't know too? But then how did he learn it? Did someone teach him about it? Who? Was it Mr. Error again?'

*knock* *Knock*

Prenelle appeared at the door and knocked on it to gain their attention, she seemed to have brought along with her a plate full of delicious and sweet-smelling Crepe Suzette.

"Nicholas you asked for this?" Prenelle asked, she placed the plate on the table and smiled lightly as she saw Loki looking at the plate with a little drool leaking out of his mouth.

"That's not for you Loki. I'll give you some when you're done with today's classes, is that alright?" Prenelle said kindly, rubbing Loki's hair affectionately.

Loki nodded but he was confused, "Why did you bring it here then? Old man doesn't like sweets right?"

Prenelle laughed but didn't say anything and just shook her head while looking at Nicholas, "Don't let him do anything stupid alright?"

"Yeah, yeah, I won't make a mistake."

Prenelle just nodded and left.

"Now pay close attention, I'll show you the difference between a normal spell and one that has been modified with Runic Spell Casting."

Loki nodded and activated spirit vision to look at exactly what was happening.

Nicholas flicked his wand wordlessly and caused a simple circle of spirituality to escape his wand.

The simple circle slowly morphed into a simple ball of light that appeared at the end of the wand.

The ball of light detached itself and floated to the general area in between Loki and Nicholas.

'The simple lumos charm?'

"Pay attention the next one is going to be modified.", Nicholas said and Loki immediately braced himself.

Nicholas's wand flicked, barely.

Spirituality left his wand and produced a complex diagram.

At the bottom of the diagram was an open book, from its centre a lighthouse-like tower sprouted and behind it all was a spinning circle like the wheel of a ship.

As soon as the diagram was completed, Loki felt himself go blind.

For a second the whole world was white. There was nothing else in sight. Along with it Loki felt that he was in the presence of something much deeper and richer than Nicholas. It was the presence of a True God. Something Loki had already felt in the Room of Conveniences.

But the light and the presence vanished just as soon as it arrived, and Loki heard Nicholas speak in a strained manner.

"Turn off your spirit vision and tell me something true!"

Loki didn't understand what was going on but did as he was told to do and spoke anyway, "I'm a boy."

The light at the tip of Nicholas's wand turned into a bright emerald green.

"Now tell me a lie."

Loki was a little shocked but regained his senses and spoke anyway, "I'm a girl."

The light at the tip of Nicholas's wand turned a bright shade of red.

"*Phew*" Letting out a deep *sigh* of relief, Nicholas flicked his wand, uncast the spell, wiped the sweat away from his forehead, and looked at Loki. "Did you catch all that boy?"
