There are two sayings in the village about White Snake Gully.
One is that in the late Qing Dynasty, a gang of bandits had entrenched themselves here, living off plunder and looting.
One year, amidst external turmoil and warfare, the bandits dared not go out to commit their crimes, so they ordered the villagers to gather the food from the village and bring it here.
The villagers complied in order to survive, but after they delivered the food, they were brutally massacred by the bandits.
As they were on the brink of being wiped out, a white snake descended from the sky and swallowed all the bandits.
In gratitude for the white snake's life-saving act, the villagers not only named this place White Snake Gully but also built a White Snake Temple on the mountaintop and at the mountain gate.
Wang Xiaolong had not seen the one at the mountaintop, but the White Snake Temple at the mountain gate still existed to this day, though it had long fallen into disrepair.
