In Traditional Chinese Medicine, epilepsy is generally believed to be: "Due to the coldness and weakness of the spleen and stomach, the source of bio-transformation is absent, nutrients fail to convert to essence but transform into phlegm. This phlegm congeals and does not dissipate within the chest diaphragm, flows to the heart and triggers epilepsy."

Herbal medicine treatments naturally start from the cause of the disease, replenishing the spleen and stomach, removing cold pathogenic factors, and eliminating stubborn phlegm. There is a wide variety of herbal formulas, which are not described here in detail.
