We compromised. Wyla drove us to a quiet diner, where Alec grabbed a table near the door while Wyla and I gravitated to a deserted corner to the back of the place. We ordered burgers and shakes.
"You're freaking me out a little," Wyla said as she picked at her chipped nail polish.
In all other regards, Wyla was so pulled together that the chipped nail polish surprised me. I'm not sure why. No one was perfect, and Wyla had a blue-collar job. It must be hard to keep pristine nails.
"Don't be. What I'm about to tell you, no one knows but me, and I won't tell anyone without your permission."
Wyla nodded. "Okay. So, what is it?"
"You've met Alec, right? Nice guy. Ethical, hardworking, the owner of my heart, but his life isn't perfect. His dad is Eugene Crest. Eugene will be my father-in-law one day soon, and crazy as it sounds, I like him."
"Why is that crazy? Shouldn't you like your in-laws?"
