Ash welcomed me back to the table with an attempt at a full-on-the-lips kiss. I turned my head at the last minute. I ended up with slobber on my cheek instead, but Ash didn't seem to care. I probably wasn't the only one who had ever attempted to avoid his advances.
I let everyone return to the routine of drinking, telling stories, and wandering off in pairs to dance. It was close to the end of the evening when I tried again.
"Ash, are you sure you can't introduce me to your boss? I have a good job. I can pay the money back."
"Why put yourself in debt when you've got a good-looking man like me willing to take care of you if you'll take care of me?"
I would never consider Ash good-looking. Not ugly, true. Maybe plain, forgettable, a face in the crowd.
"I know, and I love that you want to take care of me, but after that asshole ex, I'd feel better with some pocket money, you know, just in case."
