"Do you prefer me that way, sir? More feisty? Less compliant? Less… obedient?"
There is a trace of ironic defiance in her voice. Raylen cannot help but smile.
Delaney had a very dry sense of humour as well.
"I prefer you as you are," he replies. "Or rather, I prefer you in whichever way you are comfortable with."
Janey pauses for a couple of seconds. "Comfort huh," she mumbles. "I guess I am somewhat comfortable now."
"I am glad I am not intimidating you," replies Raylen. "But I have a question for you."
"Go ahead."
"Were you comfortable during the interview?" he asks, unable to resist his curiosity.
His openness just now appears to have warmed her up a bit to him, because she answers honestly. "Not at all actually. I tried to project an air of confidence that approached arrogance in hopes you'd be intrigued enough to hire me."
A chuckle escapes him. "Well, you can say it worked. It worked very well."
