Chapter 6 - Echoes from the Past

Liam's heart raced as he stared at the figure in the doorway. The man was tall, his face shadowed by the brim of a worn baseball cap. He had a rough, familiar look about him that sent a chill down Liam's spine. For a moment, Liam stood frozen, his mind reeling with the implications.

"Who are you?" Liam demanded, his voice steady but edged with fear.

The man's eyes glinted from beneath the cap's shadow, and he gave a small, almost amused smile. "Liam Hawthorne, always a pleasure."

Liam's stomach dropped. He recognized the voice immediately. It belonged to Rick Dawson, a former tour manager who had vanished from his life years ago under mysterious circumstances. Rick had always been a shadowy figure—part mentor, part enigma. Their relationship had ended badly when Rick was accused of embezzling funds from the band's tour, accusations that had never been fully cleared up.

"What the hell are you doing here?" Liam snapped, trying to keep his voice calm despite the surge of adrenaline.

Rick stepped into the flat, uninvited, and looked around with a casual air. "You've gotten yourself into quite a mess, haven't you? Thought I'd drop by and see how you're faring."

Liam's eyes narrowed. "This isn't a social visit, is it?"

Rick shrugged, his expression unreadable. "Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. Depends on how you want to play it."

Liam slammed the door shut behind him, stepping back to put some distance between himself and Rick. "I'm not interested in games. How did you find me?"

Rick's smile widened, but there was no warmth in it. "Oh, come on, Liam. You didn't really think you could vanish from the world and not leave a trail? It's not as easy as it used to be."

Liam clenched his fists, frustration bubbling over. "What do you want?"

Rick leaned against the wall, crossing his arms. "Information. I need to know what you're up to, and more importantly, how deep you're in."

"I'm in hiding," Liam said, his voice tight. "From people who want to destroy me. That's all you need to know."

Rick's eyes sparkled with a hint of curiosity. "You're hiding from more than just the press, aren't you? Something tells me there's more to this story. Something you're not telling."

Liam's patience was wearing thin. "I don't have time for your games, Rick. Either you tell me why you're here or you get out."

Rick straightened up, his demeanor shifting from casual to serious. "Alright, alright. I'm here because I have a vested interest in making sure you stay hidden. There are people out there who want more than just a photograph of you. They want answers. And if they can't get them from you, they might turn their attention elsewhere."

Liam's mind raced. "What kind of people?"

Rick's face grew grim. "The kind who don't play by the rules. The kind who'd do anything to get what they want."

Liam felt a cold sweat break out on his forehead. "So, what's your angle in all this?"

Rick sighed, looking genuinely weary. "I'm here to make sure you don't get yourself—or anyone else—in trouble. I may not have been your biggest fan, but I don't want to see anyone else get hurt because of this mess."

Liam studied Rick's face, searching for any sign of deceit. The man's expression was inscrutable, but Liam knew he had to be cautious. Trusting Rick could be as dangerous as ignoring him altogether.

"I don't need your help," Liam said finally, his voice firm. "I've made it this far on my own, and I don't plan on changing that now."

Rick held up his hands in a placating gesture. "Fine. But just know that the world isn't as forgiving as it used to be. You might find yourself needing a hand sooner than you think."

Before Liam could respond, Rick turned on his heel and walked toward the door. As he reached the threshold, he paused and looked back.

"By the way," Rick said casually, "you might want to be extra careful. There's someone else looking for you, and they're not as… diplomatic as I am."

With that, Rick left, leaving Liam alone in the flat once more. The silence that followed was heavy, punctuated only by the distant sounds of the city outside. Liam stared at the door, his mind spinning with the implications of Rick's visit.

What had Rick meant by "someone else"? And how much danger was Liam really in?

Sofia was at the shop early the next morning, trying to catch up on paperwork and prepare for the day ahead. The quiet of the store was a welcome respite from the chaos of the previous day. She had managed to get through her morning routine without too much trouble, but the anxiety about Liam's situation still lingered in the back of her mind.

As she sorted through a stack of records, her phone buzzed with a new message. It was from Liam, and the message was short and cryptic: "Need to talk. Can you come by the flat?"

Sofia's heart skipped a beat. She quickly finished what she was doing and locked up the shop. She took a deep breath before heading out, trying to calm the storm of worry that was brewing inside her.

When she arrived at the flat, she knocked on the door, feeling a mix of apprehension and curiosity. Liam opened the door, his face pale and tense.

"Come in," he said, stepping aside to let her enter. The flat felt even smaller with the tension that seemed to hang in the air.

"What's going on?" Sofia asked, her voice trembling slightly. "Is everything alright?"

Liam closed the door and took a deep breath. "I had a visitor. Someone from my past. He—he warned me about someone else who's looking for me."

Sofia's eyes widened. "Who?"

Liam shook his head. "I don't know. But he said they're not as friendly as he is. That makes me think this situation is worse than I thought."

Sofia's mind raced. "What should we do?"

Liam looked at her, his expression conflicted. "I don't know yet. But I need to lay low, and I need you to keep a lookout. If you see anything suspicious, or if anyone asks about me—"

"I'll handle it," Sofia interrupted, determination in her voice. "I'll do whatever I can to help you stay hidden."

Liam nodded, a hint of gratitude in his eyes. "Thank you. I know this isn't what you signed up for."

Sofia managed a small smile. "Well, it's not every day you get wrapped up in a rock star's drama."

Liam chuckled, though the sound was hollow. "I wish it were just drama. But this is serious. I need to figure out how to deal with whoever is after me before it's too late."

Sofia took a deep breath, trying to shake off the unease. "I'll keep the shop running and try to stay under the radar. Just… be careful."

Liam's eyes were filled with a mixture of gratitude and worry. "I will. And you too. We're in this together now."

As Sofia left the flat, she couldn't shake the feeling of impending danger. The world seemed darker and more uncertain than ever. But she had made her choice, and now she had to see it through.
