Chapter 184 - Chapter 184: Into the Ashen Wastes

Mira and Rebecca led their team south, the barren expanse of the Ashen Wastes stretching endlessly before them. The air was thick and dry, carrying the scent of scorched earth. The horizon shimmered with heat, and the faint hum of the ward network was long behind them.

Rebecca adjusted her daggers at her side, her steps light despite the oppressive environment. "So, let me get this straight," she said, breaking the silence. "We're heading into a wasteland to find a fracture that could end the world, and the best-case scenario is we don't die horribly?"

Mira didn't look at her, her sharp eyes scanning the terrain. "Best-case scenario is we stop the Veilborn and save the world. Try to focus."

"I am focused," Rebecca replied, her smirk faint. "Focused on how hot it is."

One of the guardians trailing behind chuckled softly, but Mira shot him a look that silenced him immediately.

"Enough," Mira said sharply. "We don't know what's waiting for us. Stay alert."

The Ashen Wastes were a desolate place, the ground cracked and lifeless, the sky an unbroken expanse of harsh blue. As the group moved deeper into the region, the air grew heavier, the oppressive weight of the Veilborn's energy pressing down on them.

Mira slowed her pace, her hand resting on the hilt of her dagger. "We're close. The energy is stronger here."

Rebecca crouched down, brushing her fingers over a blackened patch of earth. The ground was warm to the touch, faint traces of glowing symbols etched into its surface. "Looks like we've found our trail."

Mira nodded, motioning for the group to continue. "Keep moving. We need to find the fracture before it's fully activated."

After hours of navigating the barren terrain, they reached a massive crater. The ground here was fractured and glowing faintly, the air vibrating with a low hum that sent shivers down their spines. At the center of the crater, a dark fissure pulsed with energy, tendrils of shadow snaking outward like living things.

"That's it," Mira said, her voice low. "The fracture."

Rebecca squinted at the glowing fissure, her usual humor absent. "It's smaller than I expected. Not less creepy, though."

The group descended into the crater cautiously, their weapons drawn. The closer they got to the fissure, the stronger the whispers became, swirling around them in a dissonant symphony.

Mira motioned for the team to form a perimeter. "We hold the line here. Rebecca and I will disable the fracture."

"Disable it?" Rebecca asked, raising an eyebrow. "I didn't know we were demolition experts."

"Alaric gave us the counter-symbols," Mira replied, her tone clipped. "We carve them into the surrounding terrain to disrupt the energy flow."

Rebecca sighed, unsheathing her daggers. "Fine. Let's get carving."

As they began etching the symbols into the ground, the shadows surrounding the fissure began to stir. Dark figures rose from the edges of the crater, their forms shifting and unstable. The guardians tightened their circle, their weapons at the ready.

"They're here," one of the guardians said, his voice tense.

Mira didn't look up from her work. "Hold them off. We need more time."

Rebecca grinned, her daggers gleaming. "This is the part I'm good at."

She darted forward, her movements quick and precise as she struck the first shadow. The creature dissolved into smoke, but more took its place, their forms coalescing from the darkness.

The guardians fought fiercely, their strikes cutting through the shadowy attackers, but the creatures were relentless, their numbers seemingly endless.

"This isn't normal," one of the guardians shouted, his voice strained. "They're multiplying!"

"They're feeding off the fracture's energy," Mira called out, her focus unwavering as she continued carving the symbols. "The longer it stays active, the stronger they'll get."

Rebecca spun away from an attacker, her blades flashing. "Then we'd better work faster."

The battle intensified as more shadows poured from the fissure, their movements wild and erratic. The guardians were forced to tighten their circle, their coordination the only thing keeping them from being overwhelmed.

Rebecca moved like a whirlwind, her daggers a blur as she cut down one shadow after another. "How many of these things are there?" she shouted, her tone half exasperated, half exhilarated.

"Too many," Mira replied, finishing another symbol. "One more to go."

A shadow lunged toward her, its claws gleaming with dark energy. Mira dodged swiftly, her dagger flashing as she struck it down. "Cover me! I just need a few more seconds!"

Rebecca nodded, stepping in front of Mira as she worked. "You've got this," she said, her smirk returning. "I'll keep the party busy."

As Mira carved the final symbol into the ground, the fissure pulsed violently, its energy flaring in a blinding burst of light. The shadows let out a collective scream, their forms dissolving into smoke as the energy flow was disrupted.

The ground trembled, cracks spreading outward from the fissure as it began to collapse. Mira and Rebecca stumbled back, the guardians retreating to higher ground as the crater began to cave in.

When the dust settled, the fissure was gone, its energy dissipated. The oppressive weight in the air had lifted, replaced by an uneasy stillness.

Rebecca collapsed onto a nearby rock, wiping sweat from her brow. "Well, that was fun. Let's never do it again."

Mira sheathed her daggers, her expression calm but her shoulders tense. "One down. Two to go."

As they regrouped, the guardians tended to their injuries, their exhaustion evident. The battle had taken its toll, but the team's resolve remained unshaken.

Rebecca glanced at Mira, her smirk faint but genuine. "You're a good partner, you know. For someone who never smiles."

Mira rolled her eyes but didn't respond, her focus on the horizon. "We need to move. Serena and Elias are counting on us."

Rebecca stood, stretching before following Mira. "Lead the way, fearless leader."

The team left the Ashen Wastes behind, their steps heavy but determined. The fracture had been sealed, but the war was far from over. The Veilborn's shadow still loomed, and the final battle was drawing closer with every step.

As they traveled, Mira's thoughts drifted to Serena and Elias. She hoped their mission at the Sunken Spire was going smoothly, though she doubted it. Nothing about this fight had been easy.

But no matter what lay ahead, Mira knew one thing for certain: they would see this through to the end. Together, they would fight for the balance—and ensure the light endured.
