Chapter 176 - Chapter 176: Fractures in the Frost

The Frostfire Peaks rose like jagged spires into the pale sky, their snow-covered slopes glittering ominously under the thin sunlight. Serena, Mira, and Alaric moved cautiously through the frigid terrain, their breaths visible in the icy air. The sharp wind howled through the narrow pass they traversed, carrying with it an eerie hum that seemed to come from the peaks themselves.

"It's up there," Alaric said, pointing to a looming outcrop that jutted from the side of a sheer cliff. The faint glow of ancient glyphs pulsed along its surface, like veins carrying dark energy. "Another focal point. The structure looks dormant, but the energy radiating from it suggests it's been partially reactivated."

Serena nodded, her gaze narrowing as she scanned the area. "Then we don't have much time. If the Veilborn's followers get here before we dismantle it, we'll have a fight on our hands."

Mira pulled her cloak tighter around her shoulders, her expression sharp. "And if they're already here?"

"Then we make sure they don't leave," Serena replied, her voice firm.

The climb to the outcrop was treacherous. The path was steep and slick with ice, forcing them to move slowly and deliberately. Alaric stumbled more than once, his boots slipping on the uneven ground, but Mira was always there to steady him.

As they approached the structure, the air grew colder, and the hum of energy became almost deafening. The focal point was massive—an ancient, ice-carved spire that seemed to pierce the sky. Symbols etched into its surface pulsed faintly, their light flickering as though alive.

"This is worse than the Nexus," Mira muttered, her daggers already in hand. "I can feel it—like it's watching us."

Serena approached the base of the spire, her sword drawn. "Alaric, can you disable it?"

Alaric knelt by the spire, his tools already in hand. "I'll need time. The glyphs are more complex than the ones at the Nexus, but I can disrupt the flow of energy."

"You'll have it," Serena said, her voice steady. She turned to Mira. "Stay close and cover him. I'll hold the perimeter."

Mira nodded, positioning herself near Alaric, her sharp eyes scanning the surroundings.

As Alaric worked, the hum of energy intensified, the light from the glyphs growing brighter. The ground beneath them trembled, cracks spreading through the ice. Serena tightened her grip on her sword, her senses on high alert.

"They know we're here," Alaric said, his voice tight with concentration. "The spire is reacting to the disruption."

"Then work faster," Mira snapped, her daggers glinting in the dim light.

A shadow moved at the edge of Serena's vision. She turned sharply, her sword at the ready, as a group of robed figures emerged from the snow-covered rocks. Their movements were deliberate, their dark cloaks billowing in the icy wind.

"So much for sneaking in," Mira muttered, stepping into a defensive stance.

The leader of the group stepped forward, their staff glowing with a dark, pulsating energy. Their voice rang out, cold and commanding. "You dare defile this sacred site? Your efforts are meaningless. The Veilborn's return cannot be stopped."

Serena stepped forward, her sword gleaming in the faint light. "We've heard that before. And yet, here we are, tearing down another one of your 'sacred' sites."

The leader's lips curled into a sneer. "You cannot comprehend the power you face. The balance will fall, and the darkness will reclaim its place."

Serena didn't wait for them to finish. She charged, her blade slicing through the air as the battle began.

The fight was fierce. Serena moved with precision, her strikes unrelenting as she faced the robed figures. Each blow sent a ripple of energy through the air, the clash of steel against dark magic echoing through the peaks.

Mira fought like a shadow, her movements swift and lethal as she cut down attackers who tried to reach Alaric. "Keep working!" she shouted, her voice rising over the chaos. "We've got this!"

Alaric didn't look up, his hands steady despite the tremors in the ground. The glyphs resisted his efforts, pushing back with a force that made the air around him crackle. "Almost there!" he called out, his voice strained.

Serena parried a strike from one of the attackers, countering with a powerful blow that sent them sprawling. "Hurry!" she shouted, her gaze flicking to Alaric.

The spire pulsed violently, its light growing erratic as Alaric carved the final counter-symbol into its surface. The hum of energy faltered, the glow of the glyphs dimming as cracks spread through the spire.

"It's destabilizing!" Alaric shouted, stumbling back as the structure began to shake. "We need to move—now!"

"Fall back!" Serena ordered, her voice cutting through the chaos. She and Mira fought their way to Alaric, covering his retreat as the spire collapsed in a blinding burst of light.

The shockwave knocked them off their feet, sending shards of ice and stone flying through the air. When the dust settled, the spire was gone, its remains scattered across the frozen ground.

The robed figures who had survived the collapse retreated, their movements disorganized as they fled into the snowy wilderness. Serena watched them go, her chest heaving as she lowered her blade.

"That's another one down," Mira said, brushing snow from her cloak. "But they'll regroup. They always do."

Serena nodded, her gaze fixed on the horizon. "Let them. We'll be ready."

Alaric approached, his face pale but determined. "The focal point is destroyed, but the energy it released… it's spreading."

"What does that mean?" Serena asked, her tone sharp.

"It means the balance is still fragile," Alaric replied. "We've stopped one threat, but there are more out there. If the Veilborn's followers find another site…"

"They won't," Serena said firmly. "We'll find it first."

As they began their descent from the Frostfire Peaks, the air grew lighter, the oppressive hum of the spire's energy now gone. The team moved cautiously, their senses on high alert for any sign of the enemy.

Mira walked beside Serena, her expression unreadable. "We've bought time, but we need a better plan. Destroying these focal points is only delaying the inevitable."

Serena glanced at her, her green eyes steady. "Then we'll find a way to stop them for good."

"And if there isn't one?" Mira asked quietly.

Serena's jaw tightened. "There has to be."

By the time they reached the base of the peaks, the sun was beginning to set, casting long shadows across the snow-covered landscape. The team paused to catch their breath, the weight of their victory tempered by the knowledge of what still lay ahead.

"We've faced worse," Alaric said, his voice quiet but resolute. "We'll face this too."

Serena nodded, her resolve hardening. "The Veilborn's followers are running out of places to hide. And when we find their next target, we'll finish what we started."

The Frostfire Peaks loomed behind them, a stark reminder of the battles they had fought and the ones still to come. As they set off toward the village, Serena felt a flicker of hope.

The light endured. And so would they. Together, they would face whatever darkness awaited—and ensure that it never consumed the balance they had fought so hard to protect.
