Chapter 79 - Chapter 79: Shadows of Trust

The drive to meet Adrian felt like a countdown to disaster. Serena kept her eyes on the road, gripping the steering wheel as if it could steady the growing tension within her. Next to her, Rebecca sat silently, her face set in a deep frown, clearly still uneasy about the situation. The early morning light filtered through the dense trees lining the road, casting long shadows across the car's interior. They were heading deeper into the heart of the unknown.

Adrian had sent them coordinates to a remote location on the outskirts of a nearby town, far enough from prying eyes but close enough to make a quick escape if things went wrong. Serena had been in too many situations like this before to ignore the knot of dread tightening in her stomach.

"You sure about this?" Rebecca asked, breaking the silence that had settled over them. Her voice was low, filled with the same worry Serena had been trying to suppress.

Serena didn't look at her, keeping her gaze on the winding road ahead. "I'm not sure about anything anymore, but we don't have a choice. We can't get Alex out alone, and Adrian has the resources we need."

Rebecca sighed softly, leaning her head back against the seat. "I just don't trust him. He's always been out for himself, and I have a bad feeling about this."

Serena couldn't argue with that. Trusting Adrian felt like trusting a snake, knowing full well it could bite at any moment. But they had run out of other options. The Covenant would stop at nothing to retrieve the artifacts, and they needed to act quickly before the situation spiraled even further out of control.

"We'll watch him closely," Serena said, trying to reassure both Rebecca and herself. "Adrian's smart, but he needs us as much as we need him. As long as we stay a step ahead, we can use him to get Alex back."

Rebecca didn't respond, her arms crossed tightly over her chest as they continued down the road. The sense of impending danger only grew stronger as they neared their destination, and by the time they arrived at the coordinates Adrian had provided, Serena's heart was racing.

They pulled up to an abandoned factory on the outskirts of the town, the building looming in front of them like a relic from a forgotten era. The crumbling brick walls were covered in graffiti, and the windows had long since been shattered, leaving only gaping holes that stared out like empty eyes. It was the kind of place no one would think twice about—perfect for a clandestine meeting.

Serena parked the car a short distance from the entrance and killed the engine. "Let's do this," she said, glancing at Rebecca, who gave her a tense nod.

As they stepped out of the car, Serena's senses went into overdrive. The air felt thick with anticipation, and every small sound—the crunch of their boots on gravel, the rustle of the wind through the trees—seemed magnified. She scanned the area, searching for any sign of Adrian's presence.

"Over there," Rebecca whispered, pointing to a figure standing in the shadows near one of the factory doors.

It was Adrian, his silhouette barely visible in the dim light. He was leaning against the wall, his posture relaxed, as if he had all the time in the world. But Serena knew better. Adrian was always calculating, always watching for the next opportunity to tip the scales in his favor.

"Here we go," Serena muttered under her breath as they made their way toward him.

Adrian straightened up as they approached, a slow smile spreading across his face. He looked exactly as Serena remembered—tall, lean, and dangerous, with a glint in his eyes that suggested he was enjoying every second of this encounter.

"Serena, Rebecca," Adrian said, his voice smooth as ever. "It's so good to see you both again. I must say, I didn't expect you to reach out to me so soon after our last… interaction."

Serena didn't waste time with pleasantries. "We need to talk about the deal," she said, her voice sharp. "You said you'd help us get Alex out. What's your plan?"

Adrian's smile widened, his eyes gleaming with amusement. "Always so direct, Serena. I like that about you. Very well, let's get straight to business."

He gestured for them to follow him into the factory, and Serena exchanged a quick glance with Rebecca before doing so. Inside, the factory was even more dilapidated than it had appeared from the outside. Rusted metal beams hung overhead, and broken machinery littered the floor. The place was a far cry from the sleek, high-tech environments Serena was used to dealing with, but it served its purpose.

Adrian led them to a small room in the back of the building, where a table and a few chairs had been set up. It was clear he had been planning this meeting for a while.

"Now," Adrian said, sitting down and leaning back in his chair with a smug expression, "let's discuss the situation. You want Alex back, and I'm willing to help you. But you know how this works. Nothing is free."

Serena crossed her arms, her eyes narrowing. "What do you want in return?"

Adrian's eyes flicked briefly to the bags they were carrying, and Serena knew exactly what he was after. "The artifacts, of course," he said smoothly. "The *Sangreal* and the *Crux Ignis*. Hand them over to me, and I'll make sure Alex is released safely from the Covenant."

Serena's grip tightened on the strap of her bag. "That's not happening. We didn't bring the artifacts here to hand them over to you. You'll get your payment once Alex is safe—no sooner."

Adrian sighed dramatically, shaking his head. "Always so cautious, Serena. I expected as much. But I think you underestimate the position you're in. The Covenant is already on high alert. It's only a matter of time before they track you down. And when they do, well… let's just say things won't end well for you."

Rebecca stepped forward, her voice sharp. "We're not giving you the artifacts until we know Alex is safe. End of discussion."

Adrian's smile faltered slightly, his gaze flicking between them. He could tell they weren't going to budge, and Serena knew he was recalculating his strategy. After a tense moment, he leaned forward, his eyes narrowing.

"Very well," he said slowly. "But you need to understand something, Serena. The Covenant is not the only threat you're facing. They may be focused on retrieving the artifacts, but others—dangerous others—are watching. If you want to survive this, you're going to need more than just your wits."

Serena's heart skipped a beat. "Others? What do you mean?"

Adrian's expression darkened, his amusement fading. "You're not the only ones who know about the *Sangreal* and the *Crux Ignis*. There are forces at play here that even the Covenant is wary of. Forces that want the power these artifacts contain."

Serena felt a chill run down her spine. This was worse than she had thought. The Covenant was one thing, but if other, more dangerous players were in the game…

"What kind of forces?" Rebecca asked, her voice low.

Adrian's eyes gleamed in the dim light, a twisted smile playing on his lips. "The kind that don't negotiate. The kind that take what they want by any means necessary."

Serena's pulse quickened. They were in deeper than she had realized, and the stakes had just gotten even higher.

"Help us get Alex out," Serena said, her voice steady despite the fear gnawing at her. "Then we'll deal with whatever comes next."

Adrian leaned back in his chair, his smile returning. "Oh, Serena, I have no doubt we'll deal with what comes next. But for now, let's focus on the matter at hand."

The deal was set. But as Serena left the meeting, the weight of the situation pressed down on her like never before. They were walking into a game with players far more dangerous than she had anticipated.

And Adrian, for all his charm, was still the most dangerous of them all.
