Chapter 1 - Their arrival

When does this lecture fucking end? It's so fucking boring.

I yawned as I covered my mouth so as to not attract the attention of the teacher. She was not a strict teacher, but she hated it whenever one of her students yawned with their mouths wide open.

I sat in the left corner of the classroom, the seat right next to the window.

Why this seat in particular? It made me feel like an actual anime main character. Yes, yes, I'm delusional, just like right now I'm narrating this inside my head even though I know no one can listen to it. But I like it. To be a genius is to be a little crazy.

My trail of thought was caught by a man running towards the gates of our school. I noticed that he was running on a very erratic path. Unlike a normal human, who would usually run in a straight line, he did not. His path was extremely messy.

What is that man even doing? I should probably use my glasses more often; I can't even see that far.

I should've been able to see what was happening at the gate if it weren't for my problematic vision. Obviously, it was my fault for spending half of my days on my phone and ending up with myopia.

Two of our school's guards rushed towards the man to stop him.

I squinted my eyes in order to make out what was happening there.

I'm way too lazy to open my bag and look for glasses. When a teacher can't make me wear my glasses, why would I wear them in this situation?

I think it's more so that I felt uglier with glasses on, so I coped with it by saying that I was lazy, but deep down, even I knew it was an insecurity of mine.

Still looking at the gates, I tried to figure out what was happening. Was the man drunk? Crazy? A psychopath who escaped a mental asylum?

Oh yeah, I have an obsession with psychological horror. So stuff like this pops up in my mind quite a lot. I just wish for some sort of excitement in life.

The drunken man suddenly did something to one of the guards. The guard, using his left hand, held his other hand tight and fell down on his knees. The other guard punched the drunken man in the face.

What the actual fuck is going on down there?

I hurriedly opened my bag and started looking for my glasses. My bag had two sections. Opening the first zip, I put my hands inside, looking for my glasses's case. I couldn't find it.

I opened the second zip, and there it was in the middle of all the books, stuffed into a corner.

I pulled it out and quickly wore it.

I noticed the class had gone silent during my outrage.

I looked around and realized all of my classmates, including my teacher, were looking at me. I definitely looked like an idiot, didn't I?

"If you don't mind me asking, how much have you watched?" I asked.

"All of it." The whole class answered in unison.

This embarrassed me quite a lot.

"What made you go through this sudden outburst?" The teacher inquired.

I can't say I saw the guards fighting someone. This would prove my attention was not on the lecture.

I stayed silent and decided not to give a response. I looked down, both in embarrassment and disappointment. I couldn't respond with anything; my mind had gone blank.

She got a hint of the situation.

"Sit down and focus on the lecture." She said this as she shook her hand, asking me to sit down.

I, on the other hand, couldn't look her in the eyes because of the embarrassment.

With my glasses on, I looked back towards the gates of our school.

Where the hell are they? If only I had my glasses on before, I could've understood the situation.

Well, it's whatever. It's not like the world will end.

Looking around, I found my buddy, my best friend, sitting next to me and busy with something. Busy with starting at the girl right next to him.

Yes, he was a dreamer. She was his crush. He thought of stories where he'd ask her out, and she'd kiss him.

But that never happened because he never actually talked to her.

He was quite the player back in ninth and tenth grade, but after he got out of a serious relationship with this 'girl', he turned into an introvert, not interacting with too many people.

If he really asked her out, I'm sure she'd go out with him. I do consider myself handsome and much above average in looks; however, my brother here is a peak beauty. The pinnacle of manhood.

He has quite a masculine face, and he stood at 5'11, just 1 inch shorter than me. He also went to the gym regularly and was built amazing. Though he did not have abs, his muscle mass and strength were amazing.

He is one of the people I respect the most, and yes, he does deserve it.

Unlike him, though, I was quite lean—not as lean as a skeleton, though. I had gained quite some muscles over the summer break, and I am quite proud of it.

Especially my forearms, which I particularly focused on.

However, after school started again, I wasn't able to go to the gym as much and skipped it. Mostly because of procrastination.

Oh, I never actually introduced myself, did I?

I am Ren Amaki, a student in the twelfth grade, and I am currently studying to get into Harvard University. Huge goals, I know. But I'm very optimistic when it comes to studying. I am an average student; however, I know of this innate potential I have.

I usually study the last night or a week before the exams start. If I did start studying long before, I know that I'd end up aceing every single subject.

Call me overconfident, but yes, that is true.

The speakers present in classrooms suddenly turned on.

"Please shut all the doors. Please. Even the windows facing the corridors. This is not a drill... I repe-"

The voice was cut off. It was the same voice as our usual coordinator, who was tasked with managing that place.

The atmosphere all around the room had now changed. Everyone started discussing and talking. Thinking of what was happening and trying to come up with any explanation of what was happening.

"Is it a military attack?"

"Fire, maybe?"

Topics about natural disasters and military attacks filled the room.

My friend, Inma, was no longer focused on his crush and was now looking towards me, expecting me to say something.

I did not say anything.

"What do you think is happening out there?"

"I have no idea, but all I know is that if there really is a military attack or something similar, then it really would make sense for us to close the doors and windows."

Inma was surprised. He knew that Ren was the kind of person who was into psychological horror; Inma was into it himself.

"Maybe it's a hostage situation; someone is trying to keep us inside the school buildings." I answered.

"Maybe."

He replied.

The guy sitting next to the door saw a huge swarm of students rushing up the floors.

He saw a gruesome scene, with blood and organs scattered everywhere.

"SOMEBODY HELP ME CLOSE THE DOORS AND WINDOWS, QUICK!"

He shouted as he rushed towards the doors and shut them. All the other students did not react to the situation and were just trying to process what was happening.

I looked at my friend's desk, and he wasn't there.

Where the fuck did he disappear off to?

I looked around the room and found him rushing towards the windows.

Maybe he had figured something out, which is why he rushed there.

I did not waste a single second and rushed there myself. I started closing all the windows, starting with the last one.

"WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU GUYS DOING? Somebody, come help us, QUICK."

I shouted, snapping everyone back to reality.

Two of the other guys stood up from their desks and immediately rushed towards the windows.

I recognized both of them. It was the class president and another one of my friends.
